How to report an interview
There are several ways to prepare a written
report about an interview. For example,
you can transcribe the interview verbatim,
you can simply summarize it, or you can
summarize it but quote the speakers
occasionally. In any event, the report should
begin with an interesting title and a brief
introduction, which may include the English
five Ws (what, where, when, who, why)
and H (how) of the interview. The report
should end with an interesting conclusion.
Note that when you transcribe dialogue in
Spanish, you should pay careful attention to
format and punctuation.
Writing dialogue in Spanish
If you need to transcribe an interview
verbatim, you can use speakers’ names to
indicate a change of speaker.
LILIANA Generalmente, ¿cuándo vas de
compras?
LUIS Bueno, normalmente voy los
fines de semana. No tengo
tiempo durante la semana.
LILIANA ¿Qué compraste el fin de
semana pasado?
LUIS Me compré un par de zapatos y
unos regalos para mi abuelo.
LILIANA ¿Y gastaste mucho dinero?
LUIS No, porque encontré unas
gangas en el almacén. También
compré unas cosas en el
mercado al aire libre, donde es
posible regatear un poco.
You can also use a dash (raya) to mark
the beginning of each speaker’s words.
—¿Encontraste unas gangas?
—Sí... me compré un impermeable y unos
pantalones.
—¿Dónde los compraste?
—Los compré en el almacén Ofertas, cerca
del centro.
Escribe un informe
Antes de escribir
1. You are going to write a report for the school
newspaper about a friend’s shopping habits
and clothing preferences. To begin, you will
brainstorm a list of questions to use when you
interview your friend. Look at the categories of
question words in the chart and try to come up
with at least two questions for each category.
You should choose from these questions as well
as create some of your own.
¿Cuándo vas de compras?
¿Con quién vas de compras?
¿Adónde vas de compras?
¿Qué tiendas, almacenes o centros
comerciales prefieres?
¿Por qué prefieres comprar ropa barata/cara?
¿Te gusta buscar gangas?
¿Qué ropa llevas cuando vas a clase?
¿Qué ropa llevas cuando sales a bailar?
¿Qué ropa llevas cuando practicas un
deporte?
¿Cuáles son tus colores favoritos? ¿Qué ropa
compras de esos colores?
¿Le das ropa a tu familia? ¿Y a tus
amigos/as? ¿A quién?
¿Cuándo? 1.
2.
¿Por qué? 1.
2.
¿Qué? 1.
2.
¿Con quién? /
A quién?
1.
2.
¿Adónde? 1.
2.
¿Cuál(es)? 1.
2.
¿Te gusta(n)...? 1.
2. Once you have completed the chart, choose at least 12 questions you will use during your interview.
3. Once you have finalized your questions, take notes on the answers you receive. Then organize that
information into categories such as clothing preferences, color preferences, people to shop with and for,
places to shop, clothing prices, and shopping times.
Escribir
Write a report about your interview. Make sure you include all the information for each of the categories you
created above. Summarize your findings, and quote the person you interviewed at least twice. Make sure you
end your report with an interesting conclusion.
Modelo Hablando de la ropa que lleva Shannon, le pregunté: —¿Qué tipo de ropa prefieres cuando sales a
bailar?— Ella me contestó: —¡A mí me gusta la ropa elegante y cara!— Es obvio que ella no busca
gangas cuando sale de compras.
Después de escribir
1. Exchange rough drafts with a partner. Comment on his or her work by answering these questions:
152
Did your partner include information in a variety of categories?
Did your partner include at least two direct quotes in his or her report?
Did your partner use the correct style when writing the quotes?
Did your partner use present-tense verb forms correctly?
Did your partner use preterite verb forms correctly?
2. Revise your description according to your partner’s comments. After writing the final version, read it
once more to eliminate these kinds of problems:
spelling errors
punctuation errors
capitalization errors
use of the wrong present-tense verb form
use of the wrong preterite verb form
correct use of direct and indirect object pronouns
adjectives that do not agree with the nouns they modify
