“The expedient shoeing of a horse is a business of far greater importance
than one generally imagines. How frequently do we find ourselves betrayed
in our hopes and expectations of a lovely young horse with a most promising
outward appearance! Hardly has the beast been trained than it turns lame
due to the unconsidered manner in which the farrier handles its hooves. We
are baffled as to what the cause might be. As a consequence, the actual
source of the sickness is carelessly overlooked and the disease gains time to
establish itself. Finally the horse is left permanently lame. If, then, it is a
matter of great importance that our horse's legs should remain healthy, and
if so much rests on them being well-shoed; then the proper execution of this
work most certainly requires our full attention”!
