Critical Acclaim for 2012
Andrew Perkins Christchurch Vespers
(world première), July 2012
The concert of Sunday 22 July 2012 proved to be a watershed
moment for Rita Paczian and Bach Musica NZ’s choir and
orchestra. Not only was Bach Musica greeted with an ovation from
an excited audience; the ensemble had also successfully performed
their most modern work to date and brought to fruition the ‘most
difficult’ choral and instrumental opus in their repertoire.
When the work finished, Paczian conducted the audience’s awed
silence into the kind of rapturous applause that seldom marks the
world première of a Kiwi work. For her and Bach Musica, this proves
a triumph of professional grace and itself evidence of the humanity’s
resilience of spirit in the face of seemingly impossible challenge.
- Dr Martin Andrew, NZ Opera News
Bach St Matthew Passion, April 2012
The Bach Musica singers made the very most of the spacious town
hall acoustics. Their cry of ‘Barrabas’ was cataclysmic.
- William Dart, NZ Herald
My immediate reaction to hearing Rita Paczian’s Bach Musica NZ
perform the St Matthew Passion at the Auckland Town Hall was that
I wanted them to perform it again: it did not feel three hours long.
Paczian let the pause ring a long moment before bringing the
chorus – magnificent here and first-rate throughout the evening
- ghosting in for the only unaccompanied choral passage in the
work. Sometimes you can judge a concert by the silence it contains.
This silence burned.
- David Larsen, Metro
2013 Programme Highlights
Bach Musica NZ will move to the Auckland Town Hall for three
major concerts: Handel’s Messiah in Mozart’s arrangement,
Mendelssohn’s beautiful oratorio St Paul and Bach’s Christmas
Oratorio performed in the original German.
We proudly present a concert titled Wonderful Women that
includes several NZ premières by female composers from around
the world.
A very special treat, not to be missed, is our Bach’s Mass in B
Minor in the stunning acoustic of the Baradene Concert Hall. The
concert also features Samuel Jacobs, principal horn of the NZSO,
in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No 2. Mendelssohn’s oratorio St Paul
is equally as beautiful as the composer’s better known Elijah.
We are delighted to present internationally renowned soloists:
German baritone Christoph von Weitzel in the title role, NZ’s
own soprano Patricia Wright and Australia’s David Hamilton, our
stunning Evangelist from last year.
We will conclude our 2013 Subscription Series with Bach’s festive
Christmas Oratorio preceded by Corelli’s Christmas Concerto.
