Old Man Gloom by
Arwen Donahue. Published
in 2012. This is
a comic book, $12, 12
pages, full color, ISBN
978-1-105-41717-7.
This is a really fun way
for kids (or adults) to read
and learn about Zozobra.
The art is great and the
comic book gives the story
a contemporary feel. There
are so many other aspects
of New Mexico history
that could be a comic book
and maybe this is the way
to get kids involved in history.
BRAVO to the artist/
author. This is a fresh way
to see Old Man Gloom.
Put it in a kid’s Christmas
stocking! You can find the
comic at Page One, and
Astro-Zombies in Albuquerque
and in Santa
Fe Collected Works and
Garcia Street Books. It can
also be ordered online at
Living With American
Indian Art: The
Hirschfield Collection
by Alan J. Hirschfield
with Terrty Winchell.
Published in 2012 by
Gibbs Smith, hardback,
$75, full color
with many photos,
280 pages, ISBN 978-1-
4236-0452-5.
To say this is a beautiful
book is an understatement.
This book contains
pictures of 100, never seen
by the public, baskets, rugs,
horse gear, embellished
clothing, bags, photos, gun
cases, cradles, kachinas,
pottery, and much more.
Alan Hirschfield was a
former investment banker
and President and CEO
of Columbia Pictures and
20 th Century Fox Films. He
knows quality and can afford
to pay for it in art and
the book. The book also
has personal stories of the
art and collecting. The pictures
by W. Garth Dowling
are wonderful. Terry
Winchell owns Fighting
Bear Antiques in Jackson,
Wyoming. There are pieces
from many Native American
tribes in the book. The
proceeds from sales of the
book will be donated to Intertribal
Education & Community
Center at Central
Wyoming College adjacent
to the Wind River Reservation.
If someone on your
gift list needs a beautiful
book and they love Native
American art and history,
this is the book.
The Cartoons of Ricardo
Caté. Published in
2012 by Gibbs Smith,
paperback, $9.99. 98
pages, B&W drawings,
ISBN 978-1-4236-3009-
8.
Caté is Native American
and lives on the Santo
Domingo Pueblo in New
Mexico. The cartoons
were for the Santa Fe New
Mexican and started in
2006. The cartoons make
fun of the white man and
Indian. They are very dry
humor and we all have
thought of a number of the
subjects. For someone who
likes to cartoon this is the
perfect gift. For someone
who enjoys the humor of
Native Americans this is
perfect.
Great Short Stories
from America’s Newest
Western Writers.
Published in 2012 by
La Frontera Publishing,
paperback, 200 pages,
$18.95, B&W, ISBN 978-
0-9785634-9-3.
This is a collection of
short stories about the traditional
west and contemporary
west. Some of the
authors are Western Writ-
ers of America recognized
writers and some are newbie’s.
This is a great idea to
have an anthology of writers
and let them have at
the subject. There the usual
cattle rustlers, bank holdups,
card games, sheriffs,
and everything you would
want in Western literature.
But for the life of me I can’t
figure out why Johnny
Boggs in on the back cover
– largely with a bad photo–
he just wrote the Introduction.
That being said this
would make a great gift
for guys or those who love
western tales.
Landscape Dreams, A
Varjabedian. Published
in 2012 by UNM Press,
hardback, $50, 140
pages, 106 halftones
This book makes you
want to grab a camera and
some black and white film
and take pictures of everything.
What I can’t figure
out is things that should
have color images like
flowers, art, trees changing
color are great in these
B&W images. This book is
so New Mexican and the
images are stunning. Some
