Basketry Treasured
Presented in honor of the state’s
centennial, Basketry Treasured, through
June 1, 2013 at the Arizona State
Museum, celebrates the ancient and
abiding Arizona tradition of Native
basketry. Five hundred stunning examples
represent the staggering depth
and breadth of the museum’s collec-
tion, recently designated an American
Treasure. O’odham, Apache, and Hopi
voices enrich the exhibit’s discussions
of materials, technologies, traditions,
and the many functions basketry has
served and continues to serve in Native
communities. Other stories tell of
some of the early 20th century Ari-
zonans whose personal assemblages
became the foundation of ASM’s vast
collection.
