SHUNYI ASA ACTIVITIES 

JOINT SCHOOL ACTIVITES 

Warhammer Club Warhammer Room Years 6+ Secondary 

Come to learn how to play Warhammer with Lord of the Rings type miniatures – foul 

smelling orcs, sturdy dwarves, graceful elves and even the living dead! Get painting tips, 

develop a fighting force of your own, get help with tactics and everything else related 

to Warhammer. Once you have learnt to play then develop a fighting force of your own.

The Warhammer club runs as an ASA on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 (you will need to arrange 

your own transport home). 

Breakdancing Multi-Purpose Room Years 5&6+ Secondary 

Break dance or Bboyin’ is a dance style that came from New York in the 1970s. It has become 

increasing popular over Asia in the last 5 years. It involves Top Rock, spinning moves on 

your back, hands, head and feet, freezes and using all parts of your body to dance to the 

music. Bboyin’ can be seen every day when you turn on the TV, featured in many popular 

music videos and dance shows. Come and learn one of the most impressive dance styles 

with an expert teacher and professional dancer. 

This club runs on a Tuesday from 3:30 - 4:30pm. 

Dance Club Dance Studio Years.6-9 

Dance club is open to ages 8-14 and will include the learning several dance routines of 

different genres such as hip-hop, jazz and contemporary, which will be showcased during 

school assemblies. 

Led by Kelly Raymond who gained her I.S.T.D Dance teaching qualification from the UK 

in 2008 in Modern Theatre and Tap Dance, and is continuing to work towards her R.A.D 

Ballet Full Teacher status from London, England. This Monday Lunch time club will run 

from 13:00-13:30 and is great fun for all involved.

The Charity council will meet each week to discuss and plan ways in which BSB can help 

out in our community and associated charities. Come along to help prepare, plan and host 

charity events as well as take on a chance to get out into the community and help those

Primary French Fluency B207 Years 1-6 

Primary-age French native pupils or near-native pupils will meet once a week with the 2 

French native teachers in order to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills. The 

content may vary according to the needs of individuals, but will include learning through 

games, songs, poems and books for young children. The older pupils may focus more on 

their reading comprehension and their writing (spelling and grammatical accuracy). 

Chess Club 3SF Years 1-6 

Chess is a board game involving strategy and forward thinking. Join this club to play against 

fellow chess enthusiasts and hone your skills to take on the teacher! 

KS.1 Basketball Basketball Court 1 Years 1&2 

Basketball is a great game to develop hand-eye co-ordination and team working skills. Join 

us to shoot some hoops and have fun on the court. 

KS1 ICT Club Primary ICT Years 1&2 

This club will provide children an opportunity to improve their ability in using computers, 

as well as explore the many opportunities, for study and fun, that computers have to offer. 

Chinese Painting 3CB Years 1-3 

This is an activity looking at the art of traditional Chinese painting with ink and water. 

Children will see many great masterpieces of Chinese water-painting, study different styles 

that have evolved through history and get a chance have a go at painting too! Topics will

include: animals, plants, landscape and more. We would also like to inspire the children to 

use traditional skills to design new projects. It will be great fun for all involved. 

Recycling Art club 1SE Years 2-4 

For this ASA we will be teaching students about how they can combine recycling and 

art and crafts. We will look at past, current, and future environmental issues and the role 

recycling can play in making our world a better and safer place. We will be asking students 

to bring in recyclable trash from home (such as empty bottles and cans), and show them 

how to turn these into reusable tools and art. 

It will be an excellent opportunity for students to combine their creative ideas and art 

skills with learning and global awareness. Students will be able to take home their new 

knowledge and crafts to share with the whole family! So sign up because it is going to be 

great fun!! 

Cookery Club Cookery Room Years 3&4 

Cookery Club aims to teach the basics of food handling and preparation as well as how to 

follow simple recipes using a range of techniques and different kitchen equipment. Fun 

party foods, biscuits and cakes are favourites on this popular ASA. 

Please be aware that this is one of two cookery clubs running for the Primary school this 

season. See below for Years 5&6 clubs. 

Primary Cricket Cricket Nets Years 3-6 

Come along and learn the skills of the game of cricket. This ASA is for children who 

have played kwik cricket confidently or who have played cricket before. The children will 

learn how to bat and bowl in the nets and learn fielding skills to be applied to the game of 

cricket. All equipment will be provided. 

KS2 Basketball Basketball Court 2 Years 3-6 

Primary Basketball will provide plenty of fun for all students, enabling them to build 

up good confidence when doing some physical activity, and also developing their

communication skills . They will be given the opportunity to play 3-3 or 5-5 Basketball 

matches, and will be learning basic basketball skills such as moving the ball and defensive 

skills. We would like to contribute to the children’s physical fitness ability and team spirit 

when playing basketball. 

Gardening Club 2RB Years 4-6 

Gardening Club is for children in Years 4-6 who would like the make the school’s green 

areas look even more beautiful! A love for working hard outdoors is needed. Please wear 

old clothes and shoes to this ASA. 

Large scale Art club Amphitheatre Years 4-6 

In art club we will be doing a number of large scale art projects that will be both adventurous 

and collaborative. We will make a series of pieces where all the children can feel they’ve 

had a part in making something bigger than they could have done on their own. 

With the combined enthusiasm and creativity of the children we will make huge action 

paintings, go to space, make robots, birds, bugs, dragon masks and much much more. The 

main aim is that every few weeks the child will be able to take something home, such as 

a photo of them in space or a mask, and at the same time see their work displayed in the 

school. Another important part of the projects is that they will all develop different art 

skills. They will use a variety of materials and techniques and be able to take part in the 

design process of each item. 

The main aim is for the children to make new friends and have fun expressing their ideas 

and emotions with colours and materials and create a finished project to show off their 

talents. 

Afrikaan Language & Culture 6DK Years 4-6 

In the Afrikaans Language and South African Culture ASA, children will be introduced 

to and taught the language (Afrikaans). They will also learn fascinating aspects about the 

cultures of the people who speak the 10 other official languages of South Africa. 

Art Club A305 Years 5&6 

Come have fun with art as we learn new ways to draw and design patterns.

Chinese Calligraphy 4ER Years 5&6 

The Chinese Calligraphy club is for the children who interested in Chinese traditional 

writing by using the brush and ink. Children will practice how to write Chinese characters 

in traditional elegant way. 

Chinese Chess 6SB Years 5&6 

Come learn how to play one of the most popular board games in China. New players are 

welcome to learn the game and experienced players may hone their skills against their 

friends and the teachers! 

WEDNESDAY CLUBS 

Spanish Fluency 2DW Years 1-6 

Targeted to fluent and/or advanced Spanish speaking children, this ASA will be focused 

on improving writing and speaking skills, as well as their cultural awareness of Spanish 

speaking countries. This will involve games, recreations, videos, songs, stories, etc. through 

which we will get closer to Spanish culture and traditions. Let’s fiesta! And not siesta! 

Playground Games Foundation Entrance Year 1&2 

Children will participate in a variety of exciting and stimulating playground games. Some 

of the games include What’s The Time Mister Wolf, Duck Duck Goose, Tag, etc. Children 

will learn team building skills as well as physical and social skills. 

KS1 Team Games 1NT Year 1&2 

In this ASA the children will play a wide variety of games aimed at developing good 

corporation and communication skills whilst still having fun. Children will meet in 1NT 

and head outside to the Foundation Stage entrance. 

Splash Club Pool Years 1&2 

If you enjoy getting wet then this is the place for you. Come have fun in the pool whilst 

improving your water confidence and fitness.

Textiles & Sewing Rec. Ren Years 1&2 

In this ASA we will explore different materials and ways of sewing to create beautiful 

pieces of art! We will also learn how to make some useful items such as purses and scarves. 

Chinese Cartoons & Movies TBC Years 1-3 

This will be a great platform for the student who is keen to learn more about Chinese 

culture. Children will lead the activities as they choose from a variety selection of exciting 

Chinese movies, cartoons, music, Peking opera and more. We will also choose some fun 

activities for the children through the ASA and practice their Chinese so that by the end 

of the term our children will have a good sense of Chinese culture and language. 

Guitar Ensemble Primary Music Rooms Year 2-6 

This ASA is aimed at building confidence in beginner guitar players. Come learn to play 

the guitar and enjoy working through a variety of songs and challenges. Equipment is 

provided so all that is needed is a good attitude and a willingness to learn. 

Chinese Paper Craft 3SF Years 3&4 

Come explore some Chinese culture and get involved with Chinese paper crafts. 

Swimming Club Pool Years 3-6 

This activity is an introduction to swim squad type training. It is aimed at children who 

are able to swim laps and are interested in developing their stroke technique and fitness. 

Please only sign up if your child is an able swimmer. 

Culture Club A219 Year 3-6 

Travel around the world! Get your passport stamped each week as you enter a different 

country and learn about its language, culture, food and people.

Cricket is one of the oldest games in Britain, girl’s cricket is a fun and enjoyable sport, each 

week we will learn something new and make lots of new friends along the way. I hope that 

you will enjoy yourself loads whilst also getting a taste of the famous sport that is cricket 

and why should the boys get all the fun? 

KS2 Netball The Gym Years 3-6 

Have the opportunity to play a traditional British sport, Netball. It is an exciting seven a 

side game. You will be able to practice your passing skills, learn drills and exercises and 

perfect your footwork. Both boys and girls are welcome to take part in this new, exciting, 

fast pace 

game. 

Poetry Club 5TF Years 3-6 

Poetry club offers children the opportunity to explore and expand upon their own creative 

writing potential. Core poetic techniques such as rhythm, rhyme, metaphor and simile 

will all be introduced in fun and interactive ways. The pupils will have opportunities to 

identify and discuss these techniques within the works of selected published poets, with 

the aim to inspire the children’s own poetic flair. There may also be a chance for your 

child’s poetry to be published in the school magazine. 

Chinese Design A305 Year 4-6 

Recycle design club will provide a rich and divers experience for all the students, enabling 

them to utilise their imagination, developing their concept of recycle, while doing art 

crafts and designing fashion. At the same time, the students will develop skills in team 

work. 

Primary School Magazine Primary ICT Years 4-6 

In this after school activity the children will create, edit and distribute their own British 

School of Beijing magazine. The children will decide together upon their roles within the 

magazine, which can be anything from music writer, chief editor or photographer. They 

will also collectively decide upon the content of their articles and how they should be put 

together.

The educational aim of the ASA is to encourage the children’s creativity, their factual and 

fictional writing and their own individual interests. The group will be run by a journalism 

graduate, and the last fifteen minutes of each weekly session will be dedicated to discussing 

the importance and influence of magazines and the media in society today. It promises to 

be a hugely rewarding experience, the product of which will be available for the 

whole school to enjoy. 

Podcast Club ICT C301 Years 5&6 

At podcasting club, we will learn how to make interesting and fun content for a podcast 

which the children will help record and edit into a finished product. Come along if you 

want to have a go. 

ICT Club Secondary ICT Room Years 5&6 

The ICT Club provides an opportunity for our pupils to develop their ICT skills through 

carrying out a range of ICT tasks as well as some ICT projects. The club activities are 

designed to extend ICT skills that children use during their normal class work. Children 

enjoy working together and learning from each other. Our club’s number one aim is to 

make ICT fun! 

THURSDAY CLUBS 

Construction Club Rec. Oak Years 1&2 

For those who love creating masterpieces from Lego, blocks and other toys: let loose your 

imagination in this club. And improve your team-working and communication skills, too! 

Play-dough Club Dining Room Years 1&2 

Clay/ Play-dough club offers children the chance to get creative, get messy, and (most 

importantly) have fun, whilst developing hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Activities 

will vary each week; some weeks will focus on individual projects and some on larger 

group projects. There will be tasks set, games played, and we will even be making our own 

play-dough! The main aim of this ASA is to enable your child’s creativity to flourish whilst 

providing an enriching learning experience.

Beginner’s French 3CB Year 1-3 

This ASA is for children to start learning French in a fun way. We will start with the topic 

‘All about me’ and will learn how to say simple phrases to introduce ourselves. By the end 

of the term we should be able to say our name, age, where we live, talk about our family 

and also our likes and dislikes. We will possibly also learn some numbers and colours. Lots 

of the learning will be through songs and games. 

Arabic Language & Culture 2MK Years 1-3 

In Arabic language and culture we will be using knowledge of the Arabic alphabet to build 

simple words using flashcards. We will also practice Arabic handwriting (Naskh or rikaa 

script depending on age/level), focussing on correct letter formation and each letters 

different forms. There will also be opportunities to learn some traditional children’s stories 

and make some tasty dishes. This ASA is advised for children who have a basic knowledge 

of the Arabic language and desire to build on this. Ideal for native Arabic speakers or for 

those children who have attended previous Arabic language ASA. 

Beginner’s Spanish 2DW Years 1-3 

In beginners’ Spanish we will start learning the basics of the most spoken language in the 

world. Students will have fun discovering the culture of Spain, and by the end of the ASA 

term, we will use the vocabulary learnt to prepare some tapas to enjoy as an afternoon 

snack. 

Sketch Club 4LB Years 1-3 

Come have fun and improve your art skills in this ASA aimed at the younger artists. 

Creative Reading & Writing Primary Library Years 2-4 

This ASA will involve a variety of different reading and writing activities. We will be looking 

at examples of different writing styles (such as poetry and short stories) and teaching the 

students to apply these to their own writing. We will also practice reading skills by giving

students time to read each other’s work and presenting their own to the group. It will be 

a great chance for students to get creative with their reading and writing and show them

Team Games Multi-Purpose room Years 3&4 

Team games are a great way to build up social skill and team-work understanding; but also 

a fantastic and fun way to make new friends! 

ICT Club Secondary ICT Room Years 3&4 

In ICT club this season children will invent their own theme park and create a leaflet that 

advertises all the exciting rides and attractions they imagine. Children will improve their 

ICT skills as they learn to search for data on the internet, copy, paste and crop photos and 

assemble all their work into an eye-catching flyer to bring home with them. 

T-ball Gym Years 3-6 

T Ball is a bit like softball but without a bowler. It’s a lot of fun, and the children will learn 

new skills to help them improve their game every week. 

Comic Creators 6JO Year 3-6 

Come to this ASA if you really enjoy reading and making comics. 

You can get stuck into some classic comics, such as Dandy, Beano, Beezer and Tintin as well 

as a few more modern titles. You will be able to read stories involving favourite characters 

such as Dennis the Menace, Desperate Dan and the Bash Street Kids. 

We will look closely at how these stories are put together – how they are drawn and how 

the author uses the comic strip format to tell the story. Then you will put this knowledge 

together with your enthusiasm and artistic skills to create your own characters and draw 

them in exciting and hilarious stories. Hopefully, at the end we will be able to publish the 

comic strips created by everyone in the group into one whole comic. We may even be able 

to sell it the rest of the school!

A fast moving game that requires skill, fitness, strategy and great team work. Come and 

join our Touch Rugby ASA and enjoy one of the fastest growing sports around. This ASA 

is for boys and girls who enjoy team sports and lots of running. It is a good opportunity to 

develop your passing and moving skills used in rugby or just to keep your fitness levels up. 

This ASA will provide students with the opportunity to do skill work and apply these in a 

game situation. 

Papier Mâché 5KL Years 4-6 

In this fun ASA children will make a papier mache pot which, once complete and dried, 

they will paint and decorate. A great ASA for children who like a bit of mess at the end of 

the day! 

Ceilidh Club Dining Room Years 4-6 

The Ceilidh Club offers an exciting opportunity to learn some traditional Irish and 

Scottish dances. No experience is necessary and all of the dances will be done in pairs and 

groups to lively music. It will be lots of fun, good exercise and a great way to make friends 

in this first term. If you want to try something new then this club is for you! 

Debate Club 6DC Years 5&6 

This year’s debate club will enable students to develop their reasoning skills which they 

can later apply in the classroom and in their school work. We will be debating lighthearted 

topics with which students can easily engage and finally there will be a debating 

competition between two teams with a small prize up for grabs!

Secondary Choir B318 Lunch time KS.3 

This choir is open to all KS3 students and will run on Tuesday lunchtimes in B318. This 

choir will represent the school at a variety of events and concerts throughout the year, in 

and out of school. It is an exciting and worthwhile extra-curricular activity to be involved 

in and helps all musicians develop valuable ensemble skills, vocal ability, confidence and a 

sense of commitment. 

Homework Support B328 KS.3, 4 & 5 

Tues ASA – general support with homework and specialist support in English, English 

Literature and Poetry 

Dr Who ASA B303 KS. 3&4 

Doctor who has been running for 779 episodes as of September 2011 and it has an ever 

increasing fanbase throughout the world. One might ask why the Doctor enthrawls 

audences of all ages, and this is a difficult question to answer. The Doctor ASA hopes to 

not only explore the fandom that revolves around the Doctor but also explore the moral, 

political, and historical images that one might find in the series. 

Spoken Chinese B209 KS.3,4&5 

This course is open to Secondary students and staff who are beginners but willing to study 

spoken Chinese for daily life. We will teach basic knowledge about Chinese language, 

such as pronunciation and tones, Chinese characters and strokes, and also the words, 

expressions and conversations for everyday use. The topics include: greeting, shopping, 

dining, traveling and accommodation etc. 

Cinema of Dreams B306 KS.3&4 

In this club students will be watching and discussing a range of imaginative and exciting 

films from the last 100 years (and maybe earlier) from all over the world. This term we will

e focussing on comedy films and sketches with a view to performing our own comedy in 

a school show to be held around Christmas time. We will be learning about the different 

types of comedy from slapstick to satire and spoof to sit-com. 

Board Games B327 KS.3&4 

Strategic board games give students the opportunity to think logically and tactically about 

how to overcome problems. Many of the games we play involve the students working 

together to beat the game rather than competing with each other, so it helps students 

to learn to work together to achieve a goal. Other games involve planning ahead and 

implementing ideas to help them defeat their opponents. If you want to dominate the 

world or work with your friends to defeat a common enemy, this is the ASA for you. 

Photography Club B105 KS.3, 4 & 5 

Do you enjoy taking photographs? Then photography club is the place for you; learn how 

to take better photographs from the subjects you choose to learning about those advanced 

features on your camera. You’ll be set assignments and get to show off your work to others.

Secondary French Fluency B207 KS.3,4&5 

Secondary-age French native students or near-native students will meet once a week with

opportunity to brush up their Writing Skills, with studying different styles of texts and

KS.4 CHOIR B318 Lunch: 1.30-1.55 KS.4&5 

This choir is open to all KS4 & KS5 students and will run on Wednesday lunchtimes in 

B318. This choir is for the older students and will feature in events and concerts throughout 

the year. It is an exciting and worthwhile extra-curricular activity to be involved in and 

helps all musicians develop valuable ensemble skills, vocal ability, confidence and a sense 

of commitment. This choir will include some Soprano, Alto and Baritone arrangements 

so older boys are encouraged to join too 

Touch Rugby Running Track KS.3&4 

It’s fun, energetic and very skilful. Are you up for it? We’re looking forward to seeing some 

keen players and it doesn’t matter if you have never played before. Unlike 15-a-side rugby, 

size is not important in the touch version of the game so don’t worry if you are not big. 

And don’t forget girls, this is for you too! 

Chinese Art & Craft B219 KS.3&4 

This course will open to Secondary students from all the year groups. It includes card 

making, Chinese calligraphy, making Chinese knot, Chinese cutting etc. This ASA plunges 

the students directly into Chinese culture and traditions. It would be expected that their 

work can be displayed and decorate their own rooms, Chinese classrooms or even school 

and theatre stage during Chinese New Year. 

Debating Club B322 KS.3&4 

If you are interested in discussing the issues of the day and also want to learn how a debate 

works then come along to room B322 on a Wednesday. This will help with a personal 

statement, especially if you are planning on applying for Law or Politics at university.

Get stuck into all that makes Spanish cuisine exciting and delicious in this ASA that will 

teach you how to bring a little Spanish flamboyance into your kitchen! 

Board Games B306 KS.3&4 

Students can play and learn how to play Chess, Reversi and Backgammon. Students can 

bring in their own board games such as Risk and Monopoly. This ASA is open to secondary 

school students of all age. 

Karate Multi-Purpose Room KS.3, 4 & 5 

If you think you could be the next Karate kid then join this fun ASA where you will learn 

the basics or improve your skills in this Japanese martial art.

Film-making at BSB aims for students to learn techniques of scriptwriting and read scripts 

of well known films before being encouraged to write scripts for their own stories. The 

best script(s) will be selected to go through the film production stages by the students 

themselves.

Spanish Fluency B205 KS.3,4&5 

Targeted to fluent and/or advanced Spanish speaking children, this ASA will be focused 

on improving writing and speaking skills, as well as their cultural awareness of Spanish 

speaking countries. This will involve games, recreations, videos, songs, stories, etc. through 

which we will get closer to Spanish culture and traditions. Let’s fiesta! And not siesta! 

Please note that there is also a Monday Lunch time club, 13:00-13:30 to accompany this 

activity which you may sign up for when you take on this ASA. 

IELTS Tutorial B319 KS.5 

This ASA is primarily for senior students who need to do an English language proficiency 

exam as part of their university admission procedure. We will concentrate on IELTS 

speaking and writing, and TOEFL writing as required. 

Strength & Flexibility Dance Studio KS.3, 4 & 5 

Can you do the splits? Would you like to be able to? 

The Strength and Flexibility Club will teach you how to stretch and provide you with a 

variety of exercise to make you stronger: Ideal for anyone interested in dance or martial 

arts.

In this club students will be looking at problems and issues that affect people all over the 

world. We will investigate local and international issues, develop publicity campaigns to 

raise awareness of these issues around the school and see what changes we can make to 

these issues in our day to day lives. We will also try to arrange talks and make connections 

with speakers and experts on these issues. We will initially focus on enviromental issues 

but will also look at other subjects in future. 

Cricket Club Cricket Nets KS.3, 4 & 5 

Come enjoy a traditional English sport in an ASA that will see you bowling a backspin, 

batting a six or all out for a duck! 

Sec. School Magazine Secondary ICT KS.3, 4 & 5 

If you are a budding reporter or photographer, like drawing cartoons or offering advice, or 

maybe your great at computers with layout and design. If so then the School Magazine is 

for you, come along and get involved. 

Chinese Arts & Craft B218 KS.3&4 

This course will open to Secondary students from all the year groups. It includes card 

making, Chinese calligraphy, making Chinese knot, Chinese cutting etc. This ASA plunges 

the students directly into Chinese culture and traditions. It would be expected that their 

work can be displayed and decorate their own rooms, Chinese classrooms or even school 

and theatre stage during Chinese New Year.
