enables us to offer various additives
for the coatings industry,
mainly for waterborne formulations.
For us, dispersing
agents based on polyphosphates
and polyacrylates are
the most important additives.
However, over the years, we
have expanded our product
portfolio to include a range
of additives that meet both
industry requirements and
customer needs, e.g. additives
for application in silicate
paints and plasters, interior
and exterior paints.
Where do you see room for
improvements regarding performance
or interaction with
other coating raw materials?
Metz: I believe that from a
technology point of view
there is always room for improvement.
It is a question of
perspective: in Germany, we
have already had high quality
standards in place for many

less room for improvement
there than in other regions.
However, the advent of new
regulations often requires formulations
to be adapted. It is
crucial for us to develop and
design solutions for current
and future needs.
Basic know-how of all ingredients
is essential for being a
competent dialogue partner
for customers. In addition, a

greater understanding of the
interaction between the substrate
and coatings is beneficial
for all parties as a way of
gaining a deeper insight into
the interaction of raw materials
and their performance in
all kinds of applications.
In how far can additives
support the “green idea” of
coatings?
Metz: Additives are the little
things that essentially boost
the performance of the main
ingredients in the best possible
way. When adopting the
“green idea”, it is preferable
to take a holistic view and so
to also have “green” additives
based on renewable raw
materials wherever possible.
For example, our defoamer
“Lopon E81”, with almost zero
VOCs, is based on a natural
oil, while our “Phohs-Chek”
flame retardants are free of
halogens. As a manufacturer
of phosphates and specialty
phosphates, we offer dispersing
agents that are 100 %
mineral-based and we are focusing
on sustainability in all
areas of our business. We
create “Phostainability”– not
as a buzz word, but as the
philosophy for how we run our
