Key technology for the 21 st Century
Two opening speeches of the Congr e ss will focus on sustainability
Sustainability is the main
theme of the two keynote
speeches that will kick off
the European Coatings Co ng
r e SS. They will be delivered
by Prof. Matthias Beller,
Executive Director at the
Leibniz Institute for Catalysis,
University of Rostock,
Germany, and Dr. Erik Risberg,
Senior Chemist R&D
Antifouling at Jotun, Norway.
Prof. Matthias Beller, Leibniz
Institute for Catalysis at the
University of Rostock
Erik Risberg, Jotun
Despite numerous important
methodological advancements
in all areas of
chemistry, the industrial
production of chemicals can
still be improved,” says Beller.
“Currently, more than 80
% of all products originating
from the chemical industry
are made by catalysis. Consequently,
the development of
more efficient catalysts constitutes
a key factor for the
sustainable production of all
kinds of chemicals today and
in the future.”
The short talk will show that
both recently developed
molecular-defined and nanostructured
catalysts enable
academic and industrial chemists
to perform their organic
syntheses more selectively
and with improved economics.
Examples demonstrating the
superiority of catalytic processes
over more traditional
stoichiometric reactions will
include hydrogenations and
dehydrogenations, oxidation
reactions as well as modern
CC coupling reactions.
“What is currently being done
to improve sustainability in
the coatings business and
what is needed for the future?”
asks Risberg. “To cover
all aspects related to sustainability
through the eyes of a
paint manufacturer can be a
challenge, especially when the
process is being monitored
from cradle to grave. Impor-
tant aspects are the choice of
raw materials and their production;
the manufacture of
the product itself; the logis-
tics throughout the chain; the
protection properties for the
end user; the process involved
in the disposal; and waste
treatment. Several tools are
available for evaluating the
sustainability of products and
solutions. Life cycle assessments
are one approach for
comparing the various technologies.”
EC Congress
This presentation will provide
examples of what Jotun
has done to find more
sustainable solutions. The
problem is that an improvement
in one area may detract
from another. Consequently,
a way needs to be found
of weighing the benefits
against the disadvantages,
says Risberg. ❘❚
The future of adhesives
Technology, application, and the question of what happens next
Aside from paints and coatings, the European Coatings
Co n g r e SS will address developments in adhesives. The future
direction of adhesives will hinge on the influence of ecologically
sound technologies and sustainability. Co n g r e SS will
devote two sessions to the latest research results and solutions
in this area.
The adhesives industry
is re-assessing the role
of adhesives today and in
the future because it the
fundamental platform upon
which current research and
product development are
based. In her update on market
developments worldwide
and in Europe, Monique von
Dungen, Chem Research, will
review trends in regional demand,
market segments and
product categories as well
as make short-term projections:
Today and future
developments
Dr. Jürgen Wegener,
Chemquest, will be showing
what the future holds in store
in his presentation. It will
provide an update on the current
(2010) and future (2015)
role of structural adhesive
bonding in the enabling of
greener technologies, especially
within the construction
and transport industry, both
of which account for more
than 50 % of the human carbon
footprint. Adhesives and
Sealants sessions I and II will
also boast the latest technological
developments. These
include new silane-modified
this novel technology will
be able to both improve current
formulations and open
up new applications. Research
on a very small scale
will also be represented.
A micronised
“A pull demand from end users”
Trends in adhesive technology
Dr. Ralf Düssel, Vice President
Adhesive Resins Product
Line, Evonik, speaks
about the need for ecofriendliness
and the technical
challenges involved in
meeting every demand.
 To what extent are biodegradable
raw materials
being used in adhesives?
Ralf Düssel: In the industrial
adhesives market, we are
not seeing any significant
demand for biodegradable
raw materials at the moment,
but there is demand
for biobased raw materials.
Although use of those raw
materials in adhesives is
limited today, analyses show
a general upward trend and
a pull demand from end users.
In order to meet these
future market needs, we are
focusing on biobased solutions
for our customers. Accordingly,
we are working on
developing adhesive resins
based on “green” raw materials
in our laboratories.
 What are the biggest challenges
in finding eco-friendly
substitutes?
Düssel: From my point of
view, the biggest challenges
facing the adhesives industry
are, on the one hand,
the availability of biobased
materials and, on the other,
product performance in the
end application. Availability
is important because the
pull demand from end users
is not yet as strong as it is
in the cosmetics industry,
for example. As for performance,
eco-friendly substitutes
often fail to outperform the
raw materials previously
used. Therefore, eco-friendly
substitutes need to offer
added advantages. These are
challenges which both raw
materials suppliers and formulators
must address. Our
APAO adhesive polymers and
polyester polyols for the hotmelt
adhesives market are
solvent-free resins for ecofriendly
systems. Over the
past several years, we have
seen growth in these systems
which indicates that ecofriendly
substitutes will continue
to grow in importance.
We believe that this is also
one reason for the growth of
biobased solutions.
 How will adhesives technology
develop in the future?
Düssel: We have identified
three global megatrends:
resource efficiency, globalization
and demographics.
For the adhesives industry,
the implications are a need
for eco-friendly systems
and greater use of structural
adhesives for lightweight
construction. In addition, we
expect industrial adhesives
to enjoy significant growth
in Asia in terms of improved
production speed and ap-
plication temperatures. It is
very important for us to bear
these trends in mind when
developing products for the
future. ❘❚
Two sessions to discuss new construction chemicals
As in many other areas, sustainability
is a major trend
in the construction chemicals
business. Regulatory
demands in the construction
sector are increasingly
focusing on sustainability.
Besides the “green” aspect,
there is a need for raw materials
that help to speed up
the workflow or to improve
workability.
construction is a key
trend. We are focusing on the
development of raw materials
that improve the economic
viability of construction
New additives for
foam control
New additives for concrete
admixtures are the subject
of a presentation to be given
by Dr. Oliver Mogck, Clariant
Produkte (Deutschland). A
major challenge in the application
of concrete admixtures
is foam control. Superplasticizers
are normally used in the
materials while conserving
resources, e.g. by increasing
the energy efficiency
of buildings and reducing
environmental impacts such
as emissions. Another important
trend is “Fast & Easy
Construction.” As time is the
major cost driver in construction,
raw materials that help
to speed up the work-flow or
improve workability are of
growing interest. One example
of where we address this
trend would be quick-drying
dispersions, which speed up
downstream processing.
challenges in terms of
legislation?
Burghardt: Regulatory proposals
in the construction
sector are coming not only
from governments, but increasingly
from the market,
and often focus on sustainability.
They can act as a
tool for pushing the market
towards better solutions.
in developing a foam-control
agent for admixture applica-
goal if they are based on
simple, individual criteria
or non-scientific requirements;
they should focus on
introducing scientific, databased
evaluations instead.
 How sustainable are today’s
material solutions for
construction products?
Burghardt: Sustainability
has been a focus for our
R&D for a long while. Quite
some time ago, we developed
tools to evaluate the
sustainability of products
The use of lithium compounds
to modify the setting and
hardening times of ternary
the construction industry.
Replacing lithium salts has
Clever ways to achieve
better properties
Sessions on smart and functional coatings provide an overview
Smart coatings are often referred to as structured coatings
which confer additional benefits by responding in a defined
manner to external stimuli. Much talked-about are self-healing,
anti-fingerprint and conductive coatings, to name but a
few. These materials are clearly still attracting ever-increasing
levels of attention.
Attendees at the Co n g r e s s
sessions on smart coatings
and functional materials
will be given an overview
of current developments in
these systems. A flavour of
some of the twelve presentations
is provided below.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs),
for instance, are very promising
substances. Tiny as
they are, these molecularscale
Polymer Chemistry, University of Stuttgart, comments on the
latest trends in smart coatings.
 How do you define “smart
coatings”? What makes a
coating “smart”?
Claus D. Eisenbach: The
term “smart coating” is
most probably derived
from “smart materials.”
In applied technology, the
adjective “smart” generally
characterises the response
of a material’s properties
to a stimulus. So, a “smart
ing substances. Dr. Michael
Berkei of Byk Chemie will
discuss conductive coatings
that contain carbon nanotubes.
He will present new
additives based on CNTs
that are capable of functionalising
coatings in respect
of conductivity.
Prof. Jeon Kook Lee, Korea
Institute of Science and Technology,
will talk about electrical
external stimulus such as
light, temperature, pressure,
pH, odors & gas. The
stimulus causes a change
in the coating’s properties.
This chemical or physical
change may be reversible or
irreversible in accordance
with the special coating
system and/or intended application.
Dr. Mat thias Wanner of Fraunhofer
Institute for Manufacturing
Engineering and Automation
will address novel
self-cleaning coatings. The
project he is currently involved
in seeks to generate
surfaces which possess selfcleaning
properties and which
are less prone to scratching
or vulnerable to contact with
surfactants.
PFPE silanes to
reduce fingerprints
Surfaces which are routinely
touched in use commonly become
covered in fingerprints,
skin oil, sweat, dirt and cosmetics
– all of which are hard
to remove. Ongoing developments
in fluorosiliconemodified
surfaces are aimed
at conferring easy-to-clean
and stay-clean properties.
 What are the latest material
trends in these coatings?
Eisenbach: There are many
examples where the term
“smart coating” is used to
distinguish such coatings
from conventional protective
or decorative coatings. At
present, research and development
efforts are focused
on different areas. There are
some coatings which exhibit
self-healing properties in response
to mechanical dam-
Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) silanes
are suitable for use on
Studies are also being done
on coatings with photochromic
and/or thermochromic
properties that change colour
upon exposure to radiation
or temperature, and on
pH-sensitive coatings that
affect surface behaviour.
Dr. Melindas Wales, Reactive
Surfaces, will concentrate on
re-chargeable coatings based
on natural biomaterials. She
will detail the current state of
research in the development
of biomaterials for functional
coatings, including antifouling
and antimicrobial surfaces,
and will provide specific
examples of recharging.
Sustainable coatings will also
be discussed by Dr. Frank
Sau er of Lanxess Deutschland,
who will talk about latest
developments on slow-release
techniques for biocides.
❘❚
 What further functionalities
might be feasible in the
near future?
Eisenbach: In principle, anything
is possible. Protective
coatings which adapt
to environmental and/or
service conditions are as
conceivable as coatings for
use in medical diagnostics
(e.g., test strips) and implants.
Flexible, faster and cheaper
Advances in production technology
The success of a coating in the market depends not only on
the judicious choice of raw materials and a formulation, but
also on efficient production. Flexibility, efficiency and cost
control over the individual process steps are all important
factors.
Clearly, production technology
plays an essential role
in the manufacture of paints
and coatings. The process
should be flexible, fast and
cheap. Increasingly, paint
manufacturers are focusing
on sustainable production.
The Production Technology
session in the European Coatings
Co n g r e ss will provide an
overview of the latest developments
in this area. Norbert
Kern from Bühler AG, for example,
will talk about three-
 Find
“Faster and more flexible production
processes”
Dr. Frank Lang, Head of Research and Development, Willy A.
Bachofen AG Maschinenfabrik, explains the technical conditions
for speeding up production. For the production of longer-lasting
coatings, technologies are being developed that
are more durable and require less solvent for cleaning.
Dr. Frank Lang,
Willy A. Bachofen Machinenfabrik
 When talking to your
customers, which trends are
you seeing at the moment?
Frank Lang: We are seeing
a trend towards faster and
more flexible production
processes. For wet grinding,
this means that stirredmedia
mills need to have
more energy input, higher
throughput capability, and
scope for achieving faster
product turnover. There is
also a growing demand for
quality products that have a
reproducible, uniform particle
size.
 What is the most important
challenge in production
technology today?
Lang: Ever greater use is
being made of fine grinding
beads. We are designing
our latest mill for use with
roll mills. His presentation will
answer the question: “Why,
after more than half a century,
do three-roll mills still
exist, even in high-tech markets
such as the electronics
industry?” He will look at the
different process parameters
which influence productivity
and quality. And how they can
be adapted and controlled. At
the same time, he will tell us
where the limits of modern
three-roll mills are.
The session will also address
www.european-coatings-show.com
beads as small as 0.1 mm.
The challenge during milling
lies in separating the
beads from the product.
We offer a new bead shape,
including screens that lead
to a reduced pressure drop,
compared to other forms
of screens. The high turbulence
in our mill makes
for efficient dispersion
and grinding processes,
even when small beads are
used.
 Sustainability is an
important issue for the
coatings industry. What can
you offer coatings manufacturers
that will help them
produce longer-lasting
products?
Lang: We are optimising machine
parts to reduce wear
and extend the durability
of the mill. This includes
imposing high quality
standards on all the materials
employed. Not only that,
but our latest developments
in milling technology slash
the amount of solvent required
for cleaning. Less
solvent leads to lower costs
for purchasing and waste
disposal. And offers major
advantages for health and
the environment. ❘❚
The printing inks industry is facing serious challenges
The printing inks industry is confronted with challenges
ranging from price pressure and chemicals shortages to
product safety, legislation and sustainability issues. Nevertheless,
materials suppliers are striving to develop new
solutions for the industry. The session on printing inks will
present six interesting papers in this context.
Suppliers of raw materials
to the printing inks
industry worry about price
inks. Solubility parameters
are a useful guide
to the selection of additives,
particularly dispersants,
for complex ink formulations.
Maxwell and his colleagues
have studied a range
of chemistry options with a
view to improving dispersant
compatibility with UV monomers.
Improved solubilising
additives should help to overcome
industry issues, such
as how to improve gloss in UV
offset formulations.
“Pigment Violet 23”, which
is in such short supply in
the market that it is leading
to significant cost increases
and corresponding price
changes by pigment producers.
Continued low demand
visibility in many sub-segments,
combined with strict
cash management throughout
the value chain, is causing
high volatility. Producers
of solvents, resins and
additives are facing similar
shortages. It will be some
considerable time before
the value chain stabilises at
pre-crisis level.
In his paper, Fábio Rosa, Oxiteno,
will discuss the advantages
of a new solvent system
for flexographic printing inks.
This new system comprises
esters and alcohols that substantially
reduce mass losses
by ensuring balanced evaporation
of solvents during the
printing process, compared
to conventional systems. According
to Rosa, this system
is able to replace traditional
solvents while maintaining
the characteristics of the
end paint and effecting a significant
reduction in solvent
emissions and VOC.
Product safety is the main
focus of Dr. Rob Veraart
from Keller and Heckman:
he will give a scientific view
of incidents involving inks
in food-contact materials.
In the last few years, there
have been several reports of
incidents in which printing
ink components migrated
 Which pigments for
printing inks are in most
demand from the food-packaging
industry?
Poppe: Product safety is
the dominant topic in food
packaging. Simply meeting
the purity criteria laid down
in legislation, e.g. regarding
heavy metals and primary
aromatic amines (PAAs), is
sometimes not enough. Special
applications such as retortable
pouches mean that
higher technical performance
is expected from the
pigment. For excellent overall
pigments (HPPs) are the
products of first choice. This
is one of the reasons why demand
for HPPs has steadily
risen over the last few years.
 Which requirements regarding
product safety do pigment
suppliers have to meet?
Poppe: In Europe and North
America, there is a strong
awareness of product
safety in food packaging.
Guidelines are relatively
well established and compliance
is monitored by
non-governmental organisations.
In Asia, governments
are focusing increasingly on
food safety. For example, the
new Chinese GB9685-2008
strictly regulates the use
of additives, including pigments
in food containers and
packaging materials. One
consequence of this is that
toluenic printing inks are
being replaced by more ecologically
sound and safer ink
solutions. This global trend
towards more consumer protection
and stricter product
safety regulations will further
intensify in the future. ❘❚

Diversity everywhere
Presentations on raw materials, technologies and applications in the coatings world
Diversity will be very much in
evidence at the 25 sessions of
the 2011 Nuremberg Co n g r e SS.
The fact that papers will be
premiered on the science of
coatings underscores the
event’s unrivalled quality,
proving that, once again, the
2011 Co n g r e SS is the place to
go to find out about the latest
developments and technological
advances.
This diversity will be manifest,
too, in the different
types of paints, their applications
and functions. From raw
Jørgen Ulrik Hansen,
materials to production, the
25 sessions will illuminate
the depth of variety that
pervades the coatings world
– such as the sessions on
waterborne paints, on construction
and on automotive
coatings. Wood coatings for
both indoor and outdoor use
will also feature. The congress
is capable of spanning
the full gamut of applications.
New developments will be addressed,
too, e.g. UV-curable
coatings. This session includes
two presentations on
the topic of matting.
Jørgen Hansen from Teknos
talks about the major changes
in coatings over the last
decade and what is trending
at the moment. He also
looks into the future for a
widespread trend: the use of
renewable raw materials.
 Please name the biggest
technological changes in
coatings over the last ten
years from a customer perspective.
Jørgen Hansen: Looking
back ten years, it is clear
that there were a great many
more developments at that
time which focused only on
solventborne coatings. Today,
waterborne paints are
the only show in town, and
the buzz word is efficiency.
High diversity of
session topics
Along with a discussion of
architectural coatings, there
will also be a focus on individual
raw materials. This will
include pigments. Evonik, in
a new technical approach, will
present a toolbox concept for
developing colors for industrial
coatings. Polyurethanes,
a huge field of development
activity, will feature too.
This is one area where there
is more at stake than simply
meeting environmental protec-
Waterborne coatings back
then needed approximately
30 minutes to dry. Now they
only need ten. In some geographical
areas of Europe,
a combination of high demands
on wood quality and
new coatings system has
enabled the use of 2-coat
systems. This does not
mean that the coatings back
then were bad, but rather
they have been continually
improved over the years,
especially in terms of stability
and durability. The last
10 years were also the age of
nanotechnology. This tech-
tion and technical demands.
Markus Mechtel from Bayer
MaterialScience will report on
this and other topics. The coatings
industry has long paid
tribute to the requirements of
environmental protection and
legislation. The session on
sustainability will reveal the
progress made in this area.
Functional coatings will also be
considered. In this regard, Eric
Williams from The University of
Southern Mississippi, will be
talking about colorimetric evaluation
for activity confirmation
and quantification. Functional
nology is now employed in
all coating systems.
 What recent development
projects are driving your
technology today?
Hansen: Energy savings is one
of the drivers of continuous development.
We are aiming for
faster drying with less energy.
I worked ten years ago with
waterborne polyurethane systems
which took 45 minutes to
dry. Now, I get by with 10, and
we want to shorten that figure
even further. Film thickness
per square metre plays a key
role in this.
complete programme and abstracts at:
www.european-coatings-show.com
To save energy and to use renewables is as well a focus for wood coatings
materials have their own dedicated,
eponymous session.
The sessions on smart coatings
and nanotechnology will also
cover the scope for extending
the capability of coatings. This
Concern for the environment
is also a driving force. Many
of the demands originate
within the chemical industry
– I need only mention, for
example, the EU’s new biocidal
products directive.
New materials have
emerged that represent a
major change. Wood and
metal were around ten years
ago, of course, but materials
such as thermowood
and composites require
new coating systems and
development work. Special
products need to be developed
for them, too. New
substrates keep being developed,
showing us where
the future lies.
year, the Congre ss will also run
sessions on other coatings areas,
such as printing inks, and
powder coatings. Here, too, the
focus will be on sustainability
and ecologically sound use. ❘❚
When will the use of renewable
raw materials be common
practice and which topics will
then come into focus?
Hansen: There are many factors
at work here. And to speak
only of renewable raw materials
is to narrow the scope of
discussion. For instance, sustainability
is coming increasingly
to the fore. Paint systems
are now lasting longer, need
fewer coats and consume less
energy. I personally believe
that the technology already
exists and that the rest is just
a matter of time and the price
of oil. Coatings raw materials
often change little. It’s just that
they are being produced in a
different way that escapes the
customer’s notice. ❘❚
this is where all the industry
experts gather. My main reason
for coming is to meet potential
and existing customers.
The show is essentially a
world-famous meeting point.
That is a huge plus. But it’s
not only curious visitors who
stroll through the aisles – the
show is also used by decision
like to talk about how we can
help to make processes more
efficient, the products better
smaller. It is only through
intensive dialogue that we
can learn what legislation
European Coatings Show Preview December 2010 www.european-coatings-show.com
“I believe that the ECS 2011 will colour green”
VOC compliance, sustainability and energy savings are the key trends at the European Coatings sh ow
Once again, the latest developments in the coatings sector will feature prominently at the
European Coatings Sh o w. Birgit Genn, Executive Vice President, Heubach, believes that
environmentally friendly solutions have taken on the key roles in the pigment market. For
Erwin Honcoop, Croda, the predominant trend at the European Coatings Sh o w will be about
presenting products as biobased and sustainable.
Birgit Genn
Heubach
 Which development
trends are you seeing in
the coatings sector?
Erwin Honcoop: A good environmental
profile is gaining
momentum and will be a
qualifier in today’s demanding
coatings market. I believe
that the Europeanc Coatings
sh o w 2011 will colour green.
The global coating market
is focussing on sustainable
solutions; and it is an opportunity
to offer these at
comparable or even better
performance. We offer a
number of low and VOC-free
solutions that meet the VOC
2010 directive for decorative
coatings.
Erwin Honcoop
Croda
Birtig Genn: The challenges
presented to the
pigment industry are to
continue to bring innovative
ideas and concepts
for formulating high performance,
multifunctional
coatings. Technical and
economic requirements
must always be met but
ecological aspects are
becoming increasingly important
for consideration
by the coatings industry.
The limitation of emissions
of VOCs continues to be
an increasing challenge to
coatings manufacturers
especially with respect to
the final performance of
the coatings. The latest
challenge to the pigment
manufacturer has been
the development of pigments
providing additional
design features including
high end functionality such
as heat management properties.
In which way do your IRreflective
pigments show
these additional properties?
Genn: IR-reflecting pigments
not only reduce
heat build-up that can be
correlated with decreased
energy consumption but
also increase the life of
the coating. That is, due
to the reduction in surface
temperature, thermal degradation
of the coating is
significantly reduced. In
addition, temperature differences
between day and
night and between direct
sunlight and shadowed
areas of e.g. a roof will
also be evened out by the
IR-reflecting pigments and
as a result thermal warping
becomes less pronounced.
We will expand our IR-
reflecting product range
by adding a black with outstanding
TSR-values (Total
Solar Reflection) in the
near future.
 How are trends manifesting
themselves at the European
Coatings Sh o w?
Genn: We will introduce a
new line of universal colourants
at the European Coatings
sho w that will provide
further enhancements
regarding compatibility
with the new generation of
high solid alkyds resulting
in superior performance for
the final paint. The development
has been done in close
cooperation with several
costumers.
We will furthermore introduce
a new concept for pigment
preparations for the
replacement of environmentally
concerning pigments
which offer our customers
ready to use, customised
colour with the performance
and functionality requirements
built in already. This
new concept is a further commitment
of our flexibility and
customer orientation. ❘❚
Honcoop: At the European
Coatings sho w 2011 we will
introduce our latest innovation
to the market: a dimer
fatty amine, biobased building
block, which exhibits a
low viscosity. The marine
and protective market will
benefit from this technology
where durability under
severe conditions is key,
because of its good flexibility
and moisture resistance.
In addition to the “green”
global market trend, I see a
second growing trend: the
future in smart coatings.
Innovations in smart coatings
fit in a growing market
need for highly differentiated
and technologically
advanced coatings. In a few
years time, you will park
 For
your car in the sun and the
self-healing coating will reduce
scratches. Furthermore
there is always the continuous
search for flexible but at
the same time hard coatings
for heavy coatings applications.
Therefore, we will
launch an epoxy toughening
additive for marine and
protective coatings. This
technology provides an answer
to the markets search
of flexible coatings whilst
maintaining the hardness
performance of the epoxy
coating. The European Coatings
sho w 2011 will be an
exciting event for us.
 How do you help your
customers to realise the
VOC directive?
Honcoop: With special
polymeric surfactants, our
customers can produce VOC
free alkyd resins. Resin
manufacturers can formulate
alkyd resin emulsions
at low viscosity, with good
shelf live and dry film properties.
We also offer a range
of biobased building blocks
for resin synthesis in the
polymers and coatings industry
the products can be
used to modify a wide range
of resins including polyamides,
polyesters, polyurethanes
and epoxies. The
technologies bring performance
characteristics such as
water repellency, balance of
hardness and flexibility to
the end product. ❘❚
CLP: “ECHA expects to receive
around two million notifications”
First December 2010 has brought new classification and labelling
Whilst the REACH regulation
is by now familiar to many,
not all companies are aware
of the duties they might
have under the Regulation
on Classification, Labelling
and Packaging (CLP). It is
particularly important that
downstream users are also
aware of their obligations in
this area.
Andreas Herdina, ECHA
The CLP Regulation requires
companies to classify,
label and package their
chemical substances according
to the new CLP criteria
as of 1 December 2010. The
classification and labelling
information must also then
be notified to the European
Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
where it will be included in
the Classification and LabellingInventory.
The first
deadline of
3 January
2010 is already
fast
approaching.
By 2
November
2010 ECHA
had received
9,515
files and
510,000 notifications,
with estimates of around two
million being expected by the
January deadline, according
to Andreas Herdina, Director
of Co-operation.
Why do we need the CLP
Regulation?
Andreas Herdina: One of
the main purposes of CLP is
to introduce the United Nations’
Globally Harmonised
System (GHS) for classifying
and labelling chemical substances
and mixtures within
the EU. The CLP Regulation
ensures harmonised communication
of the hazards of
chemicals for workers and
consumers. Thus it will have
ECHA: Although down-
stream users do not need
to notify, they neverthe-
less have the obligation to
classify, label and package
substances and mixtures in
line with CLP prior to placing
them on the market
a positive impact on occupational
and public health as
well as on the environment.
An additional key benefit for
enterprises is that international
trade of chemicals will
be easier, as the standards
for transporting and supplying
chemicals across the
world will be the same.
Finally, the classification
and labelling Inventory,
which will include classification
and labelling information
on substances placed
on the EU market, will be
publicly available on ECHA’s
website in 2011.
 Who should notify?
Herdina: Duties to notify under
the CLP Regulation arise
for any company placing
substances on the market
and carrying out one of the
following activities:
• Manufacturing or importing
substances subject to
registration under REACH.
• Manufacturing or importing
substances classified
as hazardous, irrespective
of the quantity concerned.
• Importing mixtures containing
hazardous substances,
irrespective of
the quantity, when the
mixture is classified due to
the presence
of the substance.
• Importing
articles
containing
substances
which are
subject to
registration
under
REACH.
Notifications
are only
possible by
manufacturers and importers
based in the EU. Non-EU
companies can nominate
one of their importers to
notify on behalf of all the
others.
Although downstream users
do not need to notify, they
nevertheless have the obligation
to classify, label and
package substances and
mixtures in line with CLP
prior to placing them on the
market. For those receiving
a substance or mixture from
another actor in the supply
chain (providing no change
is made to it), they can take
up the classification already
supplied by that actor. In
cases where changes are
made to substances, this
triggers the individual need
to classify in line with CLP. ❘❚
A world of quality information
Vincentz Network offers an extensive series of textbooks on coatings technology
Laying the world of coatings technology in black and white at your feet is one of the tasks
which Vincentz Network has set itself. With brand new titles and new editions of textbooks on
coatings technology, we have a programme that targets both newcomers to the field of coatings
and specialists. A selection of available titles is presented below.
Anticorrosion
Dr. Jörg Sander et al.
This book will appeal to all
those seeking a better understanding
of the mutual interactions
and roles of organic
corrosion protection coatings.
This book presents the
latest insights into the quality
and chemistry of surfaces, the
proper way to prepare them
by conversion treatment, the
function of resins and anticorrosion
pigments in paints,
and novel concepts in corrosion
protection. As an added
bonus, all the standards and
directives mentioned in the
text are grouped together in
their own chapter for a better
overview. ❘❚
Functional Coatings
Dr. Volkmar Stenzel and
Nadine Rehberg
This book provides users of
paint technology with an overview
of the most promising developments
and approaches.
It also gives readers an idea of
what is currently possible and
what is likely to be possible in
the near future. It highlights
the current state of development
and market status of different
technologies and novel
surface functions that extend
beyond decoration, corrosion
protection and surface
protection. The authors have
chosen to focus on organic
coatings (including organicinorganic
hybrid coatings) and
have not addressed PVD/CVD
methods, galvanic methods
and other non-paint/lacquerrelated
topics. ❘❚
Understanding
Additives
Prof. Bodo Müller
This book covers everything
about the mode of action, application
and possible side
effects of the most important
coatings additives – in a single
volume, in textbook style
to reflect the needs of practical
work – and thus enables
readers to rapidly gain a solid
grounding in these critical, yet
complex constituents of all
paint formulations. An indispensable
companion for formulators,
it provides both an
overview and in-depth basic
knowledge of the most important
classes of additives. ❘❚
Rheology, 3 rd
edition
Thomas G. Mezger
Available in German and
English
After reading this book,
Prof. Georg Meichsner, University
of Esslingen, said: This
book focuses on the practical
applications of rheology. The
author’s insistence on ease
of understanding, vivid pic-
tures and practical examples
underpins the success of this
book, which now appears in
its third edition. The author
has expanded the book to
include the rheology of additives
in aqueous dispersions
and a discussion of dedicated
measuring devices for rheooptical
systems. ❘❚
Things to see
and do
Nuremberg boasts a wide range of attractions
A visit to the European Coatings
Show is a wonderful
opportunity to explore one
of the most historic cities
in Germany. Nuremberg
evolved into a craft and trade
centre back in the Middle
Ages and has been attracting
travellers from afar ever
since. Situated in Franconia,
the city is famous for its
impressive medieval town
centre. But it has much more
to offer than a picturesque
town centre that evokes bygone
ages.
In the modern era, the city
is benefiting from its central
location in the European
Economic Area, especially as
the EU expands eastwards.
Nuremberg is one of the fastest-growing
trade fair venues
in Europe. Every year more
Nuremberg's almost thousand years of history are still obvious in its
cityscape
than 1.2 million people attend
some 100 events and about 50
trade fairs and congresses.
So, it is not surprising that
the second-largest city in Bavaria
is well set up to cater to
throngs of visitors. Nuremberg
has an awful lot to offer –
and everything is within easy
reach. The best way to explore
it is on foot. There are numerous
sights, museums and excursions
to the countryside to
keep visitors entertained. The
“old town” is characterised by
its mediaeval buildings and
is surrounded by a city wall 5
km long. The city’s landmark
building is the Imperial Castle,
which boasts richly appointed
imperial rooms, the
Romanesque double chapel,
the deep well and the Sinwell
Tower and an extensive collection
of weapons and equipment,
is open daily. But visi-
make a point of visiting the
Gothic churches, the market
of which are hugely popular
attractions.
Indoor and outdoor
attractions aplenty
Nuremberg is the city of toys.
But you don’t have to wait for
the annual toy fair to discover
why – the city’s Toy Museum
is open all year round. Here,
the child within you will take
delight in dolls’ houses, toy
soldiers, marionettes and
much, much more. The most
famous museum in Nuremberg,
however, is the Germanic
National Museum. It
is at once the largest cultural
history museum in Germany
and the National Museum of
the Federal Republic. Museums,
in fact, abound in Nuremberg.
From the Albrecht
Dürer house, the New Museum
for Art and Design to the
Documentation Centre of the
“Reichsparteitagsgelände” –
there are over 30 museums
holding exhibitions on various
topics.
city are given over to public
Culinary specialties:
traditional and exotic
After an extensive exploratory
tour, the best way to revive
your drooping spirits is to
stop off in a sidewalk cafe or
coffee bar, or to sample traditional
Frankish food in one of
the many restaurants. Nuremberg
is renowned for its culinary
specialties. Lebkuchen
(gingerbread) and bratwurst
sausage have popularised
Nuremberg cuisine all around
the world. The sausages are a
popular “fast food” for locals
and tourists alike, offering unbeatable
style and quality and
are a must on any city walk,
especially when washed down
with a good local beer. Speaking
of which, you mustn’t miss
a trip to the beer garden when
the sun shines.
Apart from Franconian fare,
Nuremberg has plenty of
international delicacies to
sample. Enough, in fact, for
you to “eat” your way around
the world. Nuremberg’s international
restaurants offer
an irresistible ambience and
menus that will entice you to
indulge in specialties from all
over the globe – not forgetting
your favourite wine from
Argentina or Australia, beer
from Thailand or any other
exotic country.
Night owls and party-goers,
too, are spoiled for choice.
Nuremberg’s night life boasts
classic cocktail bars, stylish
fashionable bars, traditional
pubs, jazz clubs, live concerts,
and discos – there’s
something for everyone. To
find out what’s on at anytime,
simply consult the various
cultural magazines and
events calendars. One thing
you can be sure of: the nights
in Nuremberg are long. ❘❚
Nuremberg – How to get there, where to stay
Preparing a visit to the ECS
Nuremberg is highly accessible by air, rail and road. And commuting
to and from the exhibition and congress centre is just as
convenient. For both first-time and repeat visitors to the European
Coatings Show, these useful tips will help you arrange your visit to
the coatings industry’s premium event.
Nuremberg boasts good
traffic connections. It’s
easy to get to and it’s easy
to get around. The exhibition
and congress centre
is located to the south of
Nuremberg, just 7 km from
Nuremberg
Getting a flight to Nuremberg
from within Europe is straightforward,
as the city’s airport
can be reached direct from
many European cities. Intercontinental
travellers can
take connecting flights from
neighbouring international
airports, such as Frankfurt,
Munich, Zurich, Amsterdam
and Paris. The journey from
the airport to the exhibition
and congress centre takes
only about 25 minutes. Travellers
taking the underground
will have to change lines at
the main station. A taxi from
the airport to the exhibition
grounds takes about 20 minutes.
Nuremberg train station is
a junction on the European
high-speed rail network.
Most national and international
high-speed (EC, IC and
ICE) operators provide hourly
services, thereby ensuring
optimum accessibility. Two
underground lines connect
the main station and the exhibition
and congress centre:
the U1 in the direction of
“Langwasser” and the U11 in
the direction of “Messe” (exhibition
centre). Underground
trains operate every seven
minutes at peak periods and
the journey lasts eight minutes.
Nuremberg occupies a central
location in the southern German
and European motorway
tempting for those of you who
enjoy the thrill of no speed limits
on German autobahns! For
cars equipped with a satellite
just enter “Karl-Schönleben-
shouldn’t worry – the premier
