U.S. airlines expected to carry more than one billion passengers by 2015 

The FAA predicts that U.S. commercial airlines will carry 768 million passengers in 

2007, more than one billion passengers by 2015, and 1.2 billion by 2020. The latest 

FAA Aerospace Forecasts FY 2007-2020 unveils that the FAA expects 62.5 million 

take-offs and landings at the nation’s towered airports this fiscal year. By 2020, that 

number is expected to reach 81.1 million operations, growing by an average of 1.4 

million per year during the forecast period. In addition, general aviation, or private 

flying hours are expected to increase by 59% by 2020. Certain key hubs, such as 

Washington Dulles (68%), New York Kennedy (59%), Los Angeles International 

(54%), and Atlanta Hartsfield (38%), will see significant growth in the number of 

take-offs and landings, risking major passenger delays.

Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters cautioned that aviation delays 

will grow without significant reforms, as forecasters predict air traffic will 

increase by the equivalent of two major hub airports each year through 2020. 

While Peters noted the strong economy could drive new traffic, she also 

cautioned that already growing delays will continue to get worse without 

significant changes to the nation’s air traffic control system. Delays last year 

reached an all time high and now cost the economy over $10 billion annually. 

To meet the coming demand and avoid a continuation of the current record delays, the Bush Administration has 

proposed legislation to help relieve congestion, improve passenger airline travel, and cut noise for communities 

near airports. The Secretary noted that the legislation, the Next Generation Air Transportation System Financing 

Reform Act of 2007, would replace the decades-old system of collecting ticket taxes with a cost-based, stable 

and reliable funding program that relies on a combination of user fees, taxes and a federal government 

contribution to achieve the NextGen system. 

ANA grounds Bombardier fleet 

after landing gear malfunction 

ANA grounded its fleet of 13 

Bombardier DHC-8s for inspection, after 

the front landing gear on one of its 

planes failed to deploy, forcing the 

aircraft to make an emergency landing 

on March 13th. The airline announced it 

wouldn't resume service until their 

safety had been confirmed. The 

transport ministry immediately ordered 

checks on the landing gear of all 36 

Bombardier DHC-8 planes in operation 

in Japan. 

Airbus delivers 800th A330/A340 family aircraft 

British Airways to expand 

London City Airport flights 

British Airways is expanding its 

operations at London City Airport by 

more than 70% with the launch of its 

new subsidiary, BA CityFlyer. The 

new carrier will operate 250 flights a 

week from the Docklands airport to 

six UK and European destinations 

from the end of March 2007. British 

Airways currently operates 144 

flights a week at London City. BA 

began services from the airport in 

2003. 

Airbus celebrated the delivery of its 800th A330/A340 family aircraft with the 

delivery of an A330-200 to Qatar Airways. The A330-200 long range jetliner was 

delivered to Qatar Airways in a brief ceremony at Airbus' Toulouse delivery 

centre. Qatar Airways operates a fleet of 52 Airbus jets including 29 A330/A340 

passenger aircraft. Qatar also ordered the A380. Airbus so far sold more than 

1,080 A330/A340 family aircraft with 280 units still to be delivered. Airbus 

currently produces seven A330/A340s a month but said that it will increase its 

monthly production to eight by the beginning of 2008 and nine per month by the 

middle of 2009.

Boeing unveils customer identity 

for 747-8 freighter order 

Moscow-based freight company 

Volga-Dnepr Group placed an order 

for five Boeing 747-8 Freighters with 

purchase rights for an additional five 

airplanes. Air Bridge Cargo, a 

subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Group, will 

operate the airplanes valued at $ 1.4 

billion at list prices. This order was 

previously accounted for and 

associated with an unidentified 

customer on Boeing's website in 

2006. With this order, Volga-Dnepr 

becomes the seventh customer 

announced for the new 747-8 

Freighter, joining Atlas Air, Cargolux, 

Emirates, Guggenheim Aviation 

Partners, Nippon Cargo Airlines and 

Korean Air. Air Bridge Cargo will use 

the freighters for its growing cargo 

business on routes to Southeast 

Asia, China, Japan and Europe. 

747 order cancellation 

Boeing released that an unidentified 

customer canceled an order for four 

747s. Other unidentified customers 

recently ordered six 747s, six 777s 

and fifteen 787s. 

Middle East-based leasing 

company orders 787s and 737s 

ALAFCO Aviation Lease and 

Finance Company signed an order 

for the direct purchase of twelve 787- 

Fleet Transition?

8 airplanes and six Next-Generation 

737-800s. The total value of the deal 

is $2.26 billion at list prices. Six of 

the 787s on order from ALAFCO 

were booked as unidentified on 

Boeing's web site in September 

2006. The Sharia-based leasing and 

finance company is the first Middle 

East customer to finalize its order for 

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. ALAFCO 

has chosen the CFM56-7B engine to 

power its 6 firm and 6 option Boeing 

Next-Generation 737 aircraft. The 

engine order is valued at 

Air Bridge Cargo 747-8 freighter (Boeing) 

approximately $100 million at list 

price, including spare engines. 

ALAFCO recently became a publicly 

traded company in October, 2006. It 

currently has airplanes on lease with 

nine carriers world-wide.

certification from the European 

Aviation Safety Agency to power the 

Dassault Falcon 7X business jet.

Airbus receives A320 order from 

Cebu Pacific 

Cebu Pacific, the Philippines' low 

fare airline, has signed a contract for 

the purchase of ten more A320 

aircraft, with options on five aircraft 

and purchase rights on a further five 

aircraft. The airline placed an initial 

order for 12 A320 Family aircraft in 

September 2004, with the last one of 

these aircraft delivered earlier this 

month. Since the delivery of the first 

A320 in May 2005, Cebu Pacific has 

totally replaced its fleet of DC-9 and 

Boeing 757 aircraft. 

IAI’s Bedek delivers converted 

freighter to Asiana Airlines 

Israel Aerospace Industries’ Bedek 

Aviation Group has delivered the first 

of four Boeing 747-400 Bedek 

Special Freighter (BDSF) Combi to 

full freighter cargo conversions for 

Asiana Airlines. The second B747- 

400 Combi is already undergoing the 

same conversion at IAI’s facilities in 

Israel and is expected to be 

delivered to Asiana Airlines in the 

second quarter of 2007. Two 

additional aircraft will be converted 

for Asiana Airlines and delivery is 

expected in early 2009. 

Continental orders more 787s 

Continental Airlines announced an 

order for five 787-9 Dreamliners. 

This order, combined with earlier 

announced orders, brings 

Continental's total firm 787 order to 

25 aircraft. The airline also has 

contracted to convert 12 previously 

ordered 787-8 jetliners to the larger 

787-9s. Continental was the first 

airline in the Americas to order the 

787, placing its initial order for 10 

airplanes in 2004. With this latest 

announcement, Continental also 

becomes the first customer in the 

Americas to order the 787-9. The 

787-9 (250-290 passengers) is a 

slightly larger version of the 787-8 

(210 to 250 passengers) with 

increased seating and range 

capability (approximately 8,500 nmi 

versus 8,200 nmi). Continental's 

787s will be powered by GEnx 

engines. Continental is scheduled to 

receive its first 787 in 2009. 

Philippine Airlines orders 777s 

Philippine Airlines placed an order of 

two Boeing 777-300ER airplanes, 

with purchase rights for two 

additional 777-300ERs. Separately, 

PAL has signed a letter of intent with 

GECAS for the lease of two 777- 

300ER aircraft. 

Azerbaijan Airlines selects GEnx 

Azerbaijan Airlines has selected the 

GEnx engine to power its three 

Boeing 787-8 aircraft on order. 

Azerbaijan Airlines is the first airline 

in the republics of the former Soviet 

Union to order 787 aircraft and the 

GEnx engine. The engine order is 

valued at more than $110 million. 

Pinnacle Airlines orders Q400s 

Pinnacle Airlines has signed a 

contract to acquire 15 Bombardier 

Q400 74-seat turboprop airliners.

Q400 aircraft and options on an 

additional 20. The list price value of 

the 15 firm ordered aircraft is 

approximately $381 million. The 

value could rise to $1.2 billion if all 

conditional orders and options are 

exercised. Pinnacle Airlines will 

assign the 15 aircraft to its wholly 

owned subsidiary Colgan Air which 

will operate the aircraft under the 

Continental Connection brand. 

Aeroflot takes delivery of A320s 

Aeroflot took delivery of two new 

A320 aircraft under operational 

leasing arrangement. Before the end 

of the year Aeroflot will also receive 

three Airbus A321 and three A319. In 

2008 the Company anticipates 

delivery of eleven more A320. All 

aircraft will be delivered direct from 

Airbus under lease agreements with 

GECAS, Royal Bank of Scotland 

and AerCap. 

Air Malta takes delivery of A320 

Air Malta has received an A320, the 

11th of 12 aircraft lease from ILFC. 

Air Malta will receive another A320 

by the end of March. Air Malta’s fleet 

currently operates six A320s, five 

A319s and two Boeing 737-300s. 

MRO & Production 

KLM E&M wins C-check contract 

Nippon Cargo Airlines and KLM Engineering 

& Maintenance have 

signed a four year contract for Cchecks 

on the airline’s Boeing 747- 

400 fleet. The agreement involves 

ten 747-400 Cargo aircraft. The first 

C-check is expected in early 2008. 

Caribbean Airlines selects Boeing 

maintenance software 

Caribbean Airlines has adopted Boeing's 

web-based maintenance solution, 

Maintenance Performance Toolbox, 

to help improve the maintenance 

of its fleet of seven 737-800s. 

Caribbean will use available Toolbox 

modules including Library, Tasks, 

Structures, Authoring and Systems. 

These modules should help the airline 

streamline an array of maintenance 

and repair activities.

First 787 vertical fin delivered 

Boeing celebrated roll out of the first 

vertical fin for the 787 Dreamliner. 

Manufactured and assembled at the 

Composite Manufacturing Center in 

Frederickson, Wash., the vertical fin 

is the largest primary structure of the 

787 airframe built by an internal Boeing 

supplier. The delivery meets a 

key program milestone as the airplane 

begins final assembly in 

Everett, Wash., in preparation for its 

initial roll out in July. 

HAECO signs joint venture agreement 

with Air Arabia 

Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering 

Company has signed a joint venture 

agreement with Air Arabia, first lowcost 

carrier in the Middle East and 

North Africa, to meet the airline’s 

engineering and maintenance requirements. 

The new company will 

be named HAECO Sharjah Aircraft 

Maintenance Company Limited (HS- 

AECO) and will be based in Sharjah. 

Air Arabia will own 51% of the company 

while HAECO will own the remaining 

49%. As part of the agreement, 

HAECO will assist in managing 

the operation of a hangar that is 

currently under construction at Sharjah 

Airport, together with setting up 

of related maintenance, repair and 

overhaul operations specializing 

A320s. Sharjah-based Air Arabia, 

which began operations in October 

2003, will become the first airline in 

the Gulf region to go public. Air Arabia 

has been profitable since its second 

year of operations. 

P&W wins Martinair contract 

Pratt & Whitney was awarded a 

seven-year engine management program 

agreement by Martinair, a 

scheduled and charter airline based 

in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The 

agreement covers on-wing engine 

performance monitoring services for 

Martinair’s fleet of 59 PW4000s.

MTU Aero Engines’ profit up 

MTU released that 2006 revenues 

increased by 11% to 2.4 billion euros. 

MTU’s adjusted net income increased 

from 53.1 million euros in 

2005 to 121.8 million in 2006. MTU 

expects sustained growth in 2007 

with revenues are targeted to rise by 

8% to 2.6 billion. MTU expects that 

the greatest contributions to this 

growth will be provided by the commercial 

engine business and commercial 

MRO activities. 

Global Aircraft Solutions acquires 

stake in GALP 

Global Aircraft Solutions, an integrated 

aviation company engaged in 

aircraft trading, aircraft parts sales, 

and MRO services for commercial 

airlines, charter airlines and aviation 

leasing companies, has acquired a 

20% ownership interest in, and entered 

into an exclusive service 

agreement with, Global Aircraft Leasing 

Partners.

Astronic’s sales up 49% 

Astronic's sales for 2006 increased 

by 40% to $110.8 million from $74.3 

million in 2005. Astronics reported a 

2006 net income of $5.7 million compared 

with $2.2 million for 2005. 

Aer Lingus profit declines 

Aer Lingus' operating profit declined 

in 2006 to 76.0 million euros from 

81.4 million euros in 2005. Revenue 

rose by 11.3% to 1,116 million euros. 

Vought narrows losses 

Vought Aircraft Industries reported 

for the full year 2006 that net sales 

increased by 20% to $1,550 million. 

Net loss for 2006 was $36.7 million, 

compared with a net loss of $229.7 

million for 2005. 

Southwest to repurchase shares 

Southwest Airlines' Board of Directors 

authorized a new share repurchase 

program to acquire up to $300 

million of the Company's stock.

MTU Aero Engines has increased 

its stake in GE’s F414 military jet 

engine, and also secured a stake in 

the predecessor engine model, the 

F404. MTU now holds a 3.5% share 

in the F414 – up from 2.5% before 

the increase. In addition, MTU has 

taken a 1.5% share in the F404.

Copa Holdings' system-wide passenger 

traffic increased in February 

2007 by 25.7%, while capacity increased 

15.6%. System load factor 

for February 2007 was 76.2%, an 

increase of 6.1 points when compared 

to February 2006. 

Midwest Air Group reported for 

February 2007 a 6.8% increase in 

traffic while capacity went up 5.0%. 

Hawaiian Airlines reported that traffic 

increased 12.2% in February 

2007 while capacity climbed 12.7%. 

The load factor declined by 0.4 

points to 87.3%. 

Iberia reported that traffic went up 

7.5% while capacity increased by 

2.3%. The load factor improved by 

3.9 points, to 80.0%. 

Republic Airways announced that 

its operating subsidiaries Chautauqua 

Airlines and Shuttle America 

have amended their fixed-fee agreements 

with Delta Air Lines. Currently 

the two airlines operate a total 

of 55 Embraer regional jets on behalf 

of Delta, which represents approximately 

30% of Republic Airways' 

current fleet. As part of the deal, beginning 

in September 2008, all 15 

E135 aircraft currently operated by 

Chautauqua will be removed from 

the Delta Connection program at a 

rate of 2 aircraft per month. Reimbursement 

on Chautauqua's remaining 

24 E145s and Shuttle America's 

16 E170s aircraft will be permanently 

reduced by approximately 3%.

Mesa Air Group has reached an 

agreement with Delta Air Lines for 

an amendment to and assumption of 

its existing Delta Connection Agreement 

as well as for a new code share 

agreement to operate 14 CRJ-900

years. 

Austrian Airlines reported for February 

2007 that traffic increased by 

3.0% while capacity was reduced 

slightly by 0.5% compared to 2006. 

The passenger load factor was 

74.9%, an increase of 2.5 points. 

Honda Aircraft Company announced 

agreements with GKN 

Aerospace, Avcorp Industries and 

Garmin International as major component 

suppliers for the HondaJet 

advanced light jet. 

AmSafe reported that its AmSafe 

Aviation Inflatable Restraint system 

will be installed on every Business 

and First-class seat on 19 new Singapore 

Airlines 777-300ER aircraft. 

The pilots of American Airlines released 

the results of two recently 

conducted polls that demonstrate 

strong continuing support for maintaining 

mandatory retirement at age 

60 for the nation's commercial pilots. 

US Airways and Singapore Airlines 

signed a code-sharing agreement 

for flights between the U.S. and 

Singapore.
