EFP with Artistic Delegation and European Umbrella office at Pusan IFF
European Cinema in South Korea:
Directors and Sales Agents Promote New Films
Coming from as far apart as Iceland and Poland, Sweden and Portugal, 26 directors and actors will
be present at the 15 th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF, October 7-15) in South Korea with
the support of European Film Promotion (EFP) and its member organisations to open a window on
exciting stories from their home countries. Regarded as one of Asia's top film festivals, PIFF
presents around 300 films, with almost half of them
being international and world premieres and up to 100
originating from Europe. In order to promote
European films at this gateway to the Asian market, a
record number of 31 companies from across Europe
have registered at EFP's umbrella office located at the
Asian Film Market. EFP's activities in Pusan are
supported by the MEDIA Programme of the
European Union.
For the 13th year running, EFP will be supporting the
presence of European films and artists in Pusan. The
26 directors and actors will present their films in
person in the various festival sections. Amongst them are the Icelandic director Fridrik Thor
Fridriksson talking about his film Mamma Gogo, and the German director Anne Linsel, who
honours Pina Bausch in her documentary Dancing Dreams. One of the European stars invited by
the festival is the French icon Juliette Binoche.
PIFF is constantly striving for new visions to expand its role as an internationally recognized
cinema platform for films from the new generation. A special spotlight on the non-Asian cinema of
talented debut filmmakers was created last year with the festival’s launching of the Flash Forward
competition. In 2010, the festival promises an increase in diversity and depth for the ten selected
European films and one Australian film competing for the Flash Forward Award.
A special sidebar entitled “Czech Films Now: Cinema
of Liberalism” will be commemorating the 20th
anniversary of diplomatic relations between South
Korea and the Czech Republic. The six selected films
aim to foster greater understanding between the two
countries that have some common political
experiences.
In response to the increasing interest from the South
Korean festival audience and film industry in European
cinema, the festival and EFP work closely together to
coordinate various presentations, film screenings and
press interviews. For the fourth year in a row, EFP is
setting up an umbrella office for European sales agents and EFP member organisations at the
Asian Film Market, held from October 10-13. 31 companies from 15 European countries will be
present this year. Tying in with these facilities, EFP also offers Film Sales Support (FSS) for the
