"Are you coming to my party
tomorrow?"
The cost of construction of the 200-inch Hale telescope at
Palomar and the cost of production of the out-of-sight motion
picture 2001: A Space Odyssey, produced and directed by
Stanley Kubrick, were about the same: $10,500,000.00.
The divorce rate at the Cape Kennedy missile-launch center
is said to be the highest in the nation, but who's divorcing
whom?
Bob Dylan: "Just because you like my stuff doesn't mean I owe
you anything."
I have seen Stanley Kubrick's musical comedy (2001) every
day since it opened in Manhattan nearly two years ago, and
I can hardly wait to see it today. The first time I saw 2001 I
was sure it was a put-on. It is, after all, riddled with humor;
Kubrick is, after all, well known for tongue-in-cheek; the universe
is, after all (it must be; look at the front page of The New
York Times any day), a cosmic joke, and wasn't this motion
picture about the universe?
I am now convinced that the film is the best.
Every time I see it, I re-love that sexy love scene in the car . .
Leonard Rossiter maneuvering his whiskey glass . . . the stars
exploding in an abandoned corset factory in Manhattan.
Andre Breton: "Everything leads us to believe that there exists
a certain point of the intelligence at which life and death, the
real and the imaginary, the past and the future . . . cease to be
perceived as opposites."
Arthur C. Clarke: "M-G-M doesn't know it yet, but they've
footed the bill for the first $10,500,000.00 religious film."
(Clarke says he's been on Atlantis. Recently.)
Kubrick: "It's hard to convey a film's unique qualities in its
advertising. The sense of what a movie is like quickly gets
around."
