Documents which have been notarized by a notary public and then certified with a
conformant apostille are then accepted for legal use in all the nations that have signed
the Hague Convention.
Any documents and apostilles written in a foreign language will have to be translated
into Italian by an authorized translator, registered in the albo (guild). A list of authorized
translators is available at the front desk of the Tribunale (City Courthouse) on
Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 6. IWF members have recommended the following translator:
HELPFUL RESOURCES
For help with long-term paperwork, visit the city’s URP in Piazza Maggiore, see Chapter 1:
Plugging In. The URP website contains useful information in Italian on citizenship,
marriage and other long-term issues.
The City of Turin has an excellent English-language version of its site. While some of the
information is city specific, many of the procedures for preparing for the long term are
similar to Bologna: www.comune.torino.it/en.
CITIZENSHIP
If you qualify, there are numerous benefits to acquiring Italian citizenship. For non-EU
citizens, Italian citizenship will allow you to travel freely within the EU and to work in
any of the member states. While EU citizens already enjoy the above privileges, becoming
an Italian citizen will enable you to vote in the democracy in which you live and most
importantly, make you an equal under Italian law.
There are four ways of automatically receiving Italian citizenship: birth to an Italian
parent; being born in Italian territory; being adopted as a minor by an Italian citizen; or
judicial recognition of paternity or maternity of an Italian citizen. There are also ways of
requesting Italian citizenship. These include demonstration of bloodline or descent (if
certain conditions are met), marriage to an Italian citizen and naturalization. Note that in
the cases of marriage and naturalization, the decision to award citizenship is at the total
discretion of the authorities.
CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE
You can apply for citizenship by marriage after having resided legally in Italy for six
months after the date of the official Italian registration of your marriage. You will have
to demonstrate that you have never been convicted of certain crimes. If you marry an
Italian citizen but do not establish residency in Italy, you must instead wait three years
from the date of your marriage to qualify. When you apply, you will complete a modulo
(form), downloadable online from the Prefettura (Prefect). You will also need to submit
the following documents:
