Arredato: fully furnished This could range from an apartment that is truly furnished with everything, including frying pans, crucifixes and pictures painted by the owner. It could also mean that the apartment is equipped with just the bare essentials: kitchen appliances, beds and tables. Semi arredato: semi furnished There is no norm as far as a semi furnished apartment is concerned. You could find everything you need and then some. You could find only a toilet and a sink. Call the landlord or agency and ask for specifics before you even bother going to see the place. Non arredato or vuoto: not furnished or empty Here again, the meaning can vary. Hopefully, you will find a finished bathroom but there is no guarantee. It’s not uncommon for the landlord to tell you that the kitchen is without appliances, either because the previous tenants will be taking the appliances with them, or because the apartment has just been rennovated and there is literally nothing in the kitchen.

NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE When in Bologna you are either dentro or fuori porta (inside or outside the city gates). The once intact ancient wall is now encircled by the viale (ring road). Life dentro porta means arcades, monuments and charming architecture. Just about everything is within walking or biking distance. It also means higher density living, steep rent and minimal green space. Depending on where you land, fuori porta can mean urban sprawl minus the charm, fancy suburbs with beautiful parks and everything in between. Keep in mind that Bologna has good bus service and nothing is ever too far away. CENTRO STORICO Centro is divided into nine neighborhoods and real estate listings are organized in this format. For a list of quartieri, see Chapter 1: Plugging In. The center is characterized by a labyrinth of narrow streets and arcades. An exception is the area surrounding Via Marconi, heavily bombed during WWII and rebuilt in modest post-war fashion. The university district, with its heart in Via Zamboni, is packed with students day and night. This area is very lively, with lots of bars and eateries, but it also attracts a seedy element that may not be attractive to families. The area running from Piazza Maggiore towards Santo Stefano, Castiglione and San Mamolo is residential, quiet and beautiful. During my search, I found neither the internet nor the magazine ads helpful. Internet ads were never updated and in the magazines, by the time you find something you're interested in and call, they tell you it is gone. After trying several routes, I found the best way was to decide on the area you like and then literally walk from agency to agency in that area. When you are standing in their office, they have to help you and are generally much more accommodating than over the phone. Also, if your Italian is not that good, things are easier face-to-face, as you can use hand gestures and draw little pictures to get your point across. Harriet Walker 47
