cranium. Discovered at Forbes’ Quarry in
Gibraltar in 1848, Neanderthals are thought
to have lived between 200,000 and 28,000
years ago.

Ethiopia, in 1997. Adult cranium with a
cranial capacity of 1450 cc. White et al.
describe the morphology as intermediate
between earlier archaic African forms and
later Modern Humans, thus the subspecies
idaltu (“elder”).

With a mosaic of features, its morphology
is considered “intermediate,” with greatest

and Petralona. Cranial capacity is 1250 cc.
