INTRODUCTION
A composite of Bone Clones ® images provides a visual representation of
twenty years of product development emanating from our basic concept
of reproducing skulls and skeletons that are “virtually indistinguishable
from the original.”
Bones are very informative – they store and transmit information about
the skeletal composition of the human individual, including stature,
age, ancestry, sex, trauma experienced, and pathology acquired.
Bone Clones ® replicas capture in unsurpassed detail the subtle neural
passages, the juncture of bone to bone, the similarities and differences
from one individual to another and from one species to another.
Bones help inform us of the structural diversity in the animal world,
allowing us to note and compare adaptations to diet, behavior and
physical terrain. Significantly, bones that were encapsulated in the
earth’s strata millions of years ago become evidence in an ongoing and
complex mystery of origination. Recreating those discoveries helps
further understanding of the progression from then to now.
The products contained in this supplement are recently developed casts,
or in a few instances, groups of products addressing certain themes.
We continue to expand our Human Anatomy selection with examples
of documented European male and female skeletons from the Maxwell
Museum. At the same time we are introducing a series of skulls and
postcranial bones that show the effects of disease on bone. These are
part of the extensive collection at the Museum of Man in San Diego.
We hope you find these specialized osteological reproductions as
interesting and informative as we do.
Bone Clones ® are useful—some of our customers say
“essential”—for teaching courses in physics, zoology,
anthropological inquiries of human origins and adaptations,
primate behavior, identification of skeletal remains, human
anatomy, osteology, paleontology, forensic sciences and
more.
This catalog represents only a fraction of the products that
our company produces. It is a supplement to our more
complete 119-page catalog. You can view a copy of that
catalog on our website as a .pdf. Also, at the bottom of the
home page on our site, you will find a category index that
can help you locate the areas of interest to you, and which
you can access and view, as well as order, online.
Our extensive product lines include osteological
reproductions of extant and extinct animals, recreated fossil
hominid skulls, skeletons and postcranial parts, advanced
human anatomy, rare examples of trauma, and evidence of
illnesses that affect bone.
The two human skeletons introduced in this supplement are
an addition to our existing series of human skeletons, which
includes adults, an adolescent, two pediatric skeletons,
fetal skeletons and a rare skeleton showing the effects
of dwarfism. Bone Clones® skeletons are unmatched in
quality, each individually and expertly crafted in our facility
in California.
Bone Clones® products are manufactured in the USA.
Human Brain
Multiple Frontal Sections
KO-515………......$775.00
Introducing a Bone Clones ® Exclusive Casting of the Brain
Because of the three-dimensional characteristics of the adult brain, the appearance of
gross neuronal structures differs depending on the plane of section. Current diagnostic
tests available allow for various views of structures in the same patient. Given that
neurologic anatomical markers are often used to confirm suspected diagnoses,
students in Health Sciences must become adept at deciphering neurologic structures
from various views. Until recently, proper models of the human brain in frontal (coronal)
sections have not been available. We are proud to offer the Human Brain in frontal
(coronal) sections, which has been created in consultation with Cara Davies, Ph.D., to
meet this need.
Instructional materials provided
Discreet built-in magnets and push-fit
mating surfaces make it easy to fit and
hold sections of the brain firmly together.
Courses are being introduced in Physics and Life Science Departments specifically geared to providing pre-medical and life science students the
type of foundation in biomechanics that will better inform their future careers. Understanding the physics of skeletal anatomy is one of the areas being
added to course studies toward this end. Resurgent interest in Galileo’s proposition on bone scaling, for example, is being tested and applied in many
courses, with the aim of providing a better understanding of the relationship between physics and biology. Toward this aim, this Bone Clones® Bone
Scaling Set was developed by Suzanne Amador Kane and Peter Love for use in the Haverford College Physics Department.
Indris, the largest of all modern
prosimians, inhabit a small
area in the eastern rainforests of
Madagascar. With feet best described
as prehensile, Indri Lemurs are
characterized as vertical clingers and
leapers in the trees. The virtually
tail-less Indri bounds from branch to
branch up to 30 feet with a loaded
spring-like motion made possible by
the length and strength of its back
legs. The length differential between
the front and hind limbs is quite
apparent in the Indri skeleton.
Found in Southeast Asia, Pteropus vampyrus is
the largest of the fruit bats, with a wingspan
of five feet. Its common name comes from its
fox-like face and the color of its coat. Bats are
the only mammals able to fly. The long fingers
of the Flying Fox’s forelimbs support the very
thin, elastic wing membrane. Its thumbs and
second fingers have claws as do all the toes.
The Raven is generally regarded as the world’s most clever bird. It is the largest of the
birds in the crow family with a wingspan significantly larger than that of the crow (4 feet
as opposed to 2 1/2 feet). It can also be distinguished from crows by its longer, thicker
beak (which is more curved than the crow’s), longer, thinner wings, and wedge-shaped
tail. Ravens also soar more than crows. The Raven makes a deep croaking sound.
We are grateful to Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (BHIGR) for the opportunity to collaborate on the production of this 1/6 scale version
of the Tyrannosaurus rex skull (BHI-3033), commonly known as STAN, the most complete and undistorted T. rex skull ever found. Thirty-nine
individual elements (plus the brain case) were CT scanned; the resulting digital data were then transferred to a 3-D rapid prototype machine that
created an exact 1/6 scale replica. This skull preserves every detail including bite marks and tiny foramina from the original five foot long skull, which
has been reduced to a mere ten and one-half inches in length. The original skeleton of this Late Cretaceous (66 MYA) specimen, discovered by
Stan Sacrison in 1992 and excavated by Black Hills, now resides in the permanent collection of BHIGR in Hill City, South Dakota.
Tray 3
The disarticulated version of the Tyrannosaurus rex STAN affords close examination of the individual elements of the skull. The premium
quality hard case was custom-made specifically for this product to allow for convenient storage and transportation. The case is designed
with three trays, each lined with foam for the protection and easy removal of the bones. Supplied with either version of the skull is a 12page
packet, which describes the discovery of STAN, provides photographs of each skull bone and includes an extensive report on the
cranial morphology of T. rex.
The bones of this Fossil Giant Bony-Toothed Bird were discovered in Oued
Zem in northwestern Morocco and date from the Late Paleocene period
(about 50 MYA). The skeleton was painstakingly reconstructed across a span
of five years from bones found in the local phosphate beds. Pelagornithids,
pseudo-toothed birds, were first recognized as such by Richard Owen in
1873. Bones from these marine gliders have been found in northern Africa,
Eurasia, the Americas, and elsewhere. Our specimen has a bony wingspan
of over 12 feet with a projected span of over 18 feet with feathers. We’ve
attached discreet eye hooks to the Bone Clones ® cast to allow suspension
from the ceiling or a stand. The articulated skeleton weighs about 8 pounds.
Shown here is our powder-coated metal stand, custom-made for this product. The skeleton is
equipped with an S-rod that slides into the upright support, where it is securely fastened. The
stand’s footprint measures 3 feet by 4 feet. For your convenience, we’ve made the height of
the stand adjustable with thumbscrews from 6’5” to 8’4”.
