ALIVE IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST!
A Thorn in the Flesh
In the second reading of this Sunday’s liturgy, St. Paul talks about the glory and then the pain –
“the reason was that I might not become exalted with pride there was given to me a thorn in the flesh”.
The word for thorn (skolops) can mean stake. Sometimes criminals were impaled on a sharp stake
– this was the twisting pain Paul felt in his body.
1. The thorn has been taken to mean spiritual temptations – to doubt the duties of apostolic life.
2. It has been taken to mean the opposition he had to face with those who tried to undo his work.
3. It has been taken to mean Carnal temptations. More than likely none of these are true.
From what we know of Paul’s life, it was probably some physical condition,
eg. Eye trouble – severe headaches, epilepsy.
Bringing the Message Home
Paul prayed that the thorn would be taken away. How often do we pray that God will take away our
thorns, but God answers us as he did St. Paul. He does not take our infirmities away but gives us
strength to bear them. He does not spare us thorns, but makes us able to conquer them.
God Bless
PASTOR´S MESSAGE
WHY FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP IS IMPORTANT IN A DEMOCRACY
It seems to me that during this time when we as Catholics are giving serious attention to the
importance of religious/spiritual freedom, it is very important for us to understand how critical
the involvement of faith-filled people is in a democracy. We know that in a democracy everyone
ideally has the same right to express an opinion, try to shape public policy and, above all, that
everyone enjoys the right to vote. This does not, however, guarantee equality of influence or of access
to the process of public policy decisions. In our country today, particularly because of the outrageous
cost of running for public office, money and access to money is an all important concern for politicians.
Often, especially during an election time, it appears that more time is given over to raising money than
to governing. Along with money come the intimate parties, banquets, cocktail parties that grant access
and the freedom to plead one's special interest with political candidates. All of this makes one question the maxim that democracy in the United
States is "the governance of the people, for the people and by the people." At the time of the crafting of public policy and laws, it is also true that
a small number of lobbyists and special interests have a disproportionate degree of power and influence.
With these political realities in mind, it is especially important that as "Faithful Citizens" we use all avenues open to us to express our thoughts,
values and vision as a part of the dialogue in a democracy. I understand "Faithful Citizenship" to mean that as Catholics we view political activism
as a privilege and as a duty. We engage in the "art of discernment" i.e. the art of bringing together a careful analysis of the situation that
we find ourselves in today---- the "lay of the land", a study of the "issues of civic and religious/spiritual importance", a clear understanding
of the positions of politicians, the teachings of our faith, prayer, examination of our consciences and finally action that is the fruit of the
discernment----a prayerful vote. It is only a large number of voting citizens that has a chance of influencing public policy and of shaping
the decisions that affect us all.
From my point of view, one of the critical issues about which we as "Faithful Citizens" should be particularly energized is the definition of
the freedom of faith and the free practice of faith. We are facing, as you know, public policy decisions that for the first time in our nation's
history would seek to define the scope and characteristics of the practice of spirituality/faith. An impoverished and distorted definition of what
constitutes a faith based organization and its ministries, is in the process of being forced upon us. We are being told by "Administrative
Directives" that the ministries of our church that have been at the core of our identity: health care, education and charity are not really
spiritual or religious in their intention and outcomes. They are not entitled to be protected as the "good works that are the fruits of faith”. In this
distorted and a historical position, it is argued that conscience, gospel values and church tradition have no relevance in the determination of what
constitutes spiritual/religious activities. Government "administrative decisions" will determine what activities and good works, will be protected by
our First Amendment Rights. It is very important to distinguish that the issue at stake here is not one aspect of a health insurance plan, but rather
"What authority defines our spiritual/religious practice and identity?" Are good works of faith formation, care for the sick and care for the poor not
spiritual/religious works? To define them as other than what they truly are is an abuse of civil authority and an intrusion upon the rights of the First
Amendment. They are every bit as spiritual/religious activities as those that take place within our churches.
As we engage in a Fortnight of Faith with prayer, education and faith formation, it is imperative that we come together as a Catholic
community to express our identity and values assertively and with charity and respect for others. We need to remember as well, Saint Thomas
More's words in the play A Man For All Seasons, ----"I am the King's good servant, but God's first."
STEWARDSHIP CORNER
Sun-Days Appeal Needs Your Support!
Yes, it’s going to be a long hot summer. Already, as some folks
head North, our Offertory Collections head South. So, in order
to keep our AC running, our electric bills paid, our hurricane
protection completed, we’re asking for a little help. An extra
$2.00 per week would get us through the summer.
That’s the price of a latte, or the savings on a
two- for- one sale. Or if you can make it more: a few
dollars saved from a July 4th weekend sale. And because
hardship never goes on vacation, the
good stewards of St. Joan also keep
the Food Pantry stocked, and help
to pay AC bills for our out -of -funds
families. If everybody does a
little, that adds up to a lot. So,
for this Sun-Day and every
Sun-Day during the summer,
giving is a cool thing to do.
What Does the Church Say About Catholic Social
Teaching in the Public Square?—Seven Key Themes
A consistent ethic of life should guide all Catholic engagement in
political life. This Catholic ethic neither treats all issues as morally
equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It
anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life and other
human rights, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental
obligation to respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God. Catholic
voters should use Catholic teaching to examine candidates’ positions on issues and
should consider candidates’ integrity, philosophy, and performance. It is important for all
citizens “to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to
choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affliation or mere self-interest”
(USCCB, Living the Gospel of Life, no. 33). The following themes of Catholic social
teaching provide a moral framework for decisions in public life.
The Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person
Human life is sacred. Direct attacks on innocent human beings are never morally
acceptable. Within our society, life is under direct attack from abortion, euthanasia,
human cloning, and destruction of human embryos for research. These intrinsic evils
must always be opposed. This teaching also compels us as Catholics to oppose genocide,
torture, unjust war, and the use of the death penalty, as well as to pursue peace and
help overcome poverty, racism, and other conditions that demean human life.
Call to Family, Community, and Participation
The family, based on marriage between a man and a woman, is the fundamental unit of
society. This sanctuary for the creation and nurturing of children must not be redefined,
undermined, or neglected. Supporting families should be a priority for economic and social
policies. How our society is organized—in economics and politics, in law and public
policy—affects the well-being of individuals and of society. Every person and association
has a right and a duty to participate in shaping society to promote the well-being of individuals
and the common good.
Rights and Responsibilities
Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights
Prayer for Religious Liberty
O GOD OUR CREATOR,
from your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
You have called us as your people and given us
the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God,
and your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be “one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
possible. Each of us has a right to religious freedom, which enables
us to live and act in accord with our God-given dignity, as
well as a right to access to those things required for human decency—
food and shelter, education and employment, health
care and housing. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to
one another, to our families, and to the larger
society.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
While the common good embraces all, those who are in greatest need deserve
preferential concern. A moral test for society is how we treat the weakest among
us—the unborn, those dealing with disabilities or terminal illness, the poor
and marginalized.
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Economic justice calls for
decent work at fair, living wages, opportunities for legal status for immigrant workers, and
the opportunity for all people to work together for the common good through their work,
ownership, enterprise, investment, participation in unions, and other forms of economic activity.
Solidarity
We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and
ideological differences. Our Catholic commitment to solidarity requires that we pursue
justice, eliminate racism, end human trafficking, protect human rights, seek peace, and
avoid the use of force except as a necessary last resort. Caring for God’s Creation Care
for the earth is a duty of our Catholic faith. We all are called to be careful stewards of
God’s creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for vulnerable human
beings now and in the future.
Conclusion
In light of Catholic teaching, as bishops we vigorously repeat our call for a renewed
politics that focuses on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of the weak,
and the pursuit of the common good. This kind of political participation reflects the social
teaching of our Church and the best traditions of our nation.
VOTE TO PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
The faithful of the Diocese of Palm Beach and Floridians have an opportunity
this November to take direct action towards the protection of religious
freedom by voting ‘yes’ on both Amendments 6 and 8.
Amendment 6 protects taxpayers from funding services against their
conscience by prohibiting public funds for abortion and requires parents
to give their consent in order for their child to obtain an abortion.
By preserving time-honored public-private partnerships, Amendment 8
eliminates discrimination against churches and religious organizations
that provide social services. It provides that neither the government nor
any agent of the government may deny to any individual or entity the
benefits of any program, funding, or other support on the basis of religious
identity and belief. For more information on these amendments,
please visit the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops at
www.flaccb.org. If you want to sign up for advocacy and action alerts,
look at the Take Action section of the site and click on Join The Network
and/or Grassroots Action Center. Information can also be found on the
diocesan website www.diocesepb.org
A menudo, especialmente
emitimos nuestro voto “responsable”.
