1111 Gets Much Help From Contemporaries
IT HAS BEEN said that the Experimental Aircraft Association's
annual convention at Rockford, 111. is the
friendliest Fly-In in the world. This must be reasonably
true because the EAA has enjoyed a tremendous cooperation
not only from their members who do much of the
work of actually producing the biggest light aircraft
event but from many organizations throughout the world
who have similar interests in aviation.
The OX-5 Club was the first to greet the EAA advance
crew. This organization did much to assist in setting up
the displays. The Air Mail Pioneers of America, The
American Aviation Historical Society and the National
Pilots Association all had members present who were a
great help in presenting a very attractive static display.
The Professional Race Pilots' Association put on several
exhibitions with their midget racers that were very
exciting and brought back fond memories to thousands
of enthusiasts who witnessed the demonstrations by the
top midget race pilots and aircraft in the nation.
Just what would have been done without the help of
the 9506th Air Force Recovery Squadron is hard to
imagine. Their presence on the field acting as police in
many capacities saved the day when the tremendous influx
of visitors threatened to swamp EAA volunteers
and the small force of regular police.
The Air Scouts contributed many small tasks which
when mounted together proved to be a great help to the
overall completion of planning and executing of the plans.
The Antique Aircraft Association no doubt was present
in the largest number and contributed immensely in
every phase of the activity. The many AAA planes that
were registered certainly added color to the overall pic-
ture, particularly to the first time visitor. Besides the antique
fly-bys, the static displays and the antique forums
there was much exchange of information and stories
among individuals and small groups.
The members of the Soaring Society of America, Inc.,
no doubt had a wonderful time. They got in many hours
of flying during the very cooperative weather. Spectators
were impressed by the graceful flight of the sailplanes
and their apparent effortless flight without power.
The Midwest Waco Club was present with their classic
aircraft interesting to everyone familiar with the colorful
history of the Waco.
Radio contact throughout the nation was maintained
all during the Fly-In by the Rockford Amateur Radio
Association. These volunteers manned their short wave
rigs to give members an opportunity to transmit messages
from Rockford to anywhere in the nation without
charge. The ham operators reportedly did a big "business".
An international look was given to the convention
as a large group of European enthusiasts and members
chartered an airplane and came to the Fly-In. Two clubs,
The Popular Flying Association of England and the Resseau
de Sport de L'Aire of France, were officially represented.
They added much by their presence and exchange
of ideas, customs, and materials that differ between the
two continents.
It would be impossible to list the countless individuals
who contributed time, effort and money to the actual production
of the Fly-In as well as those ever welcome contributions
of suggestions and plans to handle the always
increasing attendance of aircraft, people, and it must be
admitted, automobiles.
