LUXEMBOURG NATIONAL HOLIDAY
CHICAGO
On June 23rd, well over 300
people helped celebrate National
Luxembourg Day at the American
Legion Hall, Morton Grove, IL.
Included in this number were
Luxembourgers and their guests
from the metropolitan area of
Chicago and 22 foreign consulates
representing all 5 continents.
Here to help us celebrate and
pictured above were our distinguished
guests from the Grand
Duchy, Jean Calmes, President
American Luxembourg Society
and Emil Weitzel, Past President.
Under the guidance of Eugene
Berger and Harry Hoffstadt of the
Chefs of Cuisine of Chicago,
delicious hot and cold hors
d'oeuvres, steak tartare, cold
salmon, various cheeses, Luxembourg
sausage, chicken wings,
meat balls and raw vegetables
were served.
As for liquid refreshments,
Luxembourg wine flowed like the
Moselle.
An array of fabulous desserts
including Luxembourg waffles
topped it off!
At the end of a great evening,
Consul Steve Heinz asked all the
guests to raise their glasses in a
toast to Grand Duke Jean's
birthday.
Hanging baskets of flowers
donated by Jamaican Gardens of
Morton Grove and Libertyville
were given away to lucky
attendees as door prizes.
A BIG THANKS to Doris (Mrs.
Steve) Heinz for her tremendous
efforts in making this a most
enjoyable evening.
THE AMERICAN-
LUXEMBOURG
SCHOBERMESS
The records show that the first
Schobermesse was held in Chicago
by Section No. 3, L.B.A. in 1904. It
was held thereafter for the next 64
years in many different locations.
The above picture from the front
page of the Program Souvenir
Book was from the Schobermesse
of 1912, the ninth year of the
festival. The original purpose of
the celebration was to exhibit
fruits, vegetables and flowers
raised by the Luxembourg farmers.
It was also a good reason to sample
wines from previous harvests and
partake of draught beer and some
of the many Luxembourg food
specialties prepared by the ladies
in the Luxembourg community.
In America the Schobermess
was always held over the Labor-
Continuing a long tradition,
Honorary Consul General Marie-
Anne Pitz-Palmatier and her
husband hosted a Luxembourg
National Day lawn party at their
home on Sunday, June 21. Some 70
local Luxembourgers attended for
an afternoon of food and wine.
Two videotapes depicting business
opportunities and life styles
in the Grand-Duchy were shown
continuously, attracting much
attention and approval. Mrs. Pitz-
Palmatier raised a toast to their
Majesties the Grand Duke and the
the American Film Institute (see
Therese and Fernand Siuda and
Claude Schaal. Later, the honorary
Consul General sent a cable to the
Grand-Ducal Palace conveying
best wishes for the good health of
their Majesties and for the
prosperity of Luxembourg.
The American Film Institute
"European Community Film Festival"
was held for the first time
this year in Los Angeles. The
Luxembourg entry "Gwyncilla,
Legend of the Dark Ages" was
shown to an appreciative audience,
twice, on June 22.
Producer Thiltges and director
Kieffer were in the audience to
answer questions on the filmmaking
process. On the same day,
Luxembourg National
Holiday In New York
New York, June 23,1987. Consul
General of Luxembourg and Mrs.
Nicholas V. Didier gave a
reception today to celebrate
Luxembourg's National Holiday.
It was held at the showroom of
Villeroy & Boch in New York City
at Madison Avenue and 26th
Street. This location was quite a
departure from previous settings.
It afforded the guests a new view of
New York City from the showroom
windows on the 41st floor.
As happens every year at the
National Holiday celebrations,
acquaintances were renewed and
recent trips to Luxembourg were
reminisced about. New Yorker
Luxembourgians seem to be
paying visits to the "Old Country"
on every possible or feasible
occasion. A buffet of special
delicacies was provided, including
salmon mousse, beef Stroganoff
with rice, and Paschteitchen — a
Luxembourgian specialty that
might be described as a pate en
croute. The wine offered was
another Luxembourgian product
together gave a reception in honor
of the Festival. Attending were
members of the press, Festival
representatives, and various
nationals.
Mrs. Marie-Jose Deutsch, a
scientist at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, traveled
with her family recently to
Luxembourg where she delivered
a paper on "Sequencing Challenges
of the Voyager Spacecraft
at Neptune" to the Association des
Ingenieurs et Industriels, June 16.
En route, Mrs. Deutsch spoke on
the same subject before an
interested audience in Washington
D.C.
Ann Iwach, M.A, also a member
of the L.A. Luxembourg community,
at the University of Southern
California. Her research involves
field work on the languages of
Luxembourg.
Marie-Anne Pitz
Hon. Consul General
of Luxembourg
— Bernard Massard. First class
liquor and soft drinks were also
provided. As a final treat, delicious
cake and coffee were offered.
The display of Villeroy & Boch
china and glassware exhibited in
the showroom is spectacular. The
dinner and breakfast sets come in
a variety of designs ranging from
traditional to modern. The "Vieux
Luxembourg" collection — offwhite
with tiny blue flower sprigs -
is, it seems, a prize possession of
many households of immigrants
from Luxembourg and even of
those of their U.S. - born families.
Mr. Didier, greeting the guests,
announced that the Luxembourg
government had decided earlier
this year to split up the functions of
the Consul General in New York
and that of its Permanent
Representative to the United
Nations — this in order to better
serve Luxembourg's interests. He
said that he is now Luxembourg's
first full duty Consul-General in
New York and that Ambassador
Feyder is its first full-fledged
Permanent Representative to the
United Nations.
(continued from page 2)
Another decision of the government
of Luxembourg, said Mr.
Didier, is to focus on the
importance Luxembourg places on
jconomic relations with the United
States. "This country is the first
(that) Luxembourg covered with a
public relations campaign to put us
on the map." He asked how often it
happened that when we make a
telephone call we have to expect
the all too familiar question,
"Luxembourg" Where is that? Is
that in the U.K. or somewhere in
Germany? How often does it occur
that Luxembourg is taken for
Liechtenstein — that 'little
territory tucked between Switzerland
and Austria'?"
(It may be noted that the
Elderhostel Program, which offers
"hundreds of intellectually stimulating
and enriching — programs"
of adult education courses on
campuses throughout the LI.S. and
Canada, lists a course in its
Fall/Winter 1987 catalog entitled
"The Small Countries of Europe".
The course description states that
"Liechtenstein, Luxembourg,
Monaco and Andorra are principalities,
the Vatican is an
ecclesiastical state, and San
Marino is a republic . . . "So much
for knowledgeability — up to now
— about Luxembourg!)
Mr. Didier said that the current
public relations program is trying
to tackle this problem. He pointed
out that first results had already
been obtained through major
articles in the business press, e.g.,
Forbes Magazine, and that other
articles would follow in the
Journal of Commerce and in
many other publications.
The message that the new
program is trying to convey,
explained the Consul-General, is
that Luxembourg is businessminded
and that - - to quote
Forbes — it is an "oasis of free
enterprise on a continent which so
often sinks into a morass of
taxation and regulation". A zero or
lower percentage in inflation, said
Mr. Didier, a 1.3 unemployment
rate, a $1 -2 billion a year balance of
payment surplus — a balanced
state budget and complete absence
of foreign debt make Luxembourg
one of the most stable countries
among our friends of the
industrialized world. This is of
course largely due, he continued, to
the booming development of
international financial services,
but Luxembourg also holds a good
record in manufacturing. He
reported that two U.S. corporations,
Guardian Industries with
one investment there and Dupont
with two, are pouring $370 million
into Luxembourg. The new Tyvek
plant, he said, is the single largest
Dupont investment outside the
U.S.
Mr. Didier went on to say that
"the reception tonight is enhanced
by the beauty of the Villeroy &
Boch showroom and the nice china
and glassware which surrounds
us, most of which is produced in
Minutes of meeting
June 2, 1987
The meeting was called to order
at 8:15 p.m. with the pledge of
allegiance to the flag.
New member George Meyers
was installed by President John
Murphy.
President Murphy reported that
space was still available on the
boat trip on July 11.
Members are also reminded of
the "Day at the Races" on August
29 at Arlington Park. Tickets are
$8.50 for admission and bus from
Oscards in Morton Grove.
The picnic is coming along
nicely. Glenn Murphy is trying to
secure the liquor license. Also it
was decided to retain the same
company for children's pony rides.
Date for the picnic is July 18th.
The section will be selling 16
ounce mugs commemorating the
Centennial. Price to be announced.
Bill Hellman reported that the
section's commemorative committee
had to have everything ready
by 6-13-87 for the book.
The section's participation in the
Morton Grove 4th of July parade
was rescued by Steve Victor and
Glenn Murphy. Volunteers for
marching should contact them.
Hot dogs and beer will be provided.
Pot-of-Gold won by President
John Murphy who generously
returned $10 to the Section.
The membership then stood
giving the brotherhood sign and
rememberance of our departed
brothers.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:30
p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
