August, 1987 LUXEMBOURG NEWS OF AMERICA Page 5 (continued from page 2) Another decision of the government of Luxembourg, said Mr. Didier, is to focus on the importance Luxembourg places on jconomic relations with the United States. "This country is the first (that) Luxembourg covered with a public relations campaign to put us on the map." He asked how often it happened that when we make a telephone call we have to expect the all too familiar question, "Luxembourg" Where is that? Is that in the U.K. or somewhere in Germany? How often does it occur that Luxembourg is taken for Liechtenstein — that 'little territory tucked between Switzerland and Austria'?" (It may be noted that the Elderhostel Program, which offers "hundreds of intellectually stimulating and enriching — programs" of adult education courses on campuses throughout the LI.S. and Canada, lists a course in its Fall/Winter 1987 catalog entitled "The Small Countries of Europe". The course description states that "Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco and Andorra are principalities, the Vatican is an ecclesiastical state, and San Marino is a republic . . . "So much for knowledgeability — up to now — about Luxembourg!) Mr. Didier said that the current public relations program is trying to tackle this problem. He pointed out that first results had already been obtained through major articles in the business press, e.g., Forbes Magazine, and that other articles would follow in the Journal of Commerce and in many other publications. The message that the new program is trying to convey, explained the Consul-General, is that Luxembourg is businessminded and that - - to quote Forbes — it is an "oasis of free enterprise on a continent which so often sinks into a morass of taxation and regulation". A zero or lower percentage in inflation, said Mr. Didier, a 1.3 unemployment rate, a $1 -2 billion a year balance of payment surplus — a balanced state budget and complete absence of foreign debt make Luxembourg one of the most stable countries among our friends of the industrialized world. This is of course largely due, he continued, to the booming development of international financial services, but Luxembourg also holds a good record in manufacturing. He reported that two U.S. corporations, Guardian Industries with one investment there and Dupont with two, are pouring $370 million into Luxembourg. After welcoming Helen and Jack Keefer to Texas, we also drank a toast to Grand-Duke Jean who's birthday is celebrated June 23. In the midst of storytelling and reminiscing we took time out to enjoy some delicious food. Everyone had a good time. Above is a picture of the event. It's that time again . . . Wanderlust has grabbed Blanche and Paul Sommer, who after their trip to New York, are planning another one to the Scandinavian Countries. When I got home from the luncheon, I had a phone call from Midwest City, Oklahoma. Mrs. Triny Garcia-Nunez, nee Triny Nilles (from Ettclbruck, Luxbg.) is joining the Luxembourgers of Dallas. A hardy welcome to Triny and her family, we are glad to have them. Triny is trying to locate Dany Presilla and Margot Donner-Presilla. It is important. Dany and Margot please call Triny at 405-769-6551. The Luxembourg Society of Dallas has a new flag. Actually it is an old flag with a little history: When World War II was almost over in Luxembourg, my mother, Maisy Chelius-Lagrange, dyed some floursacks red, white and blue. (Those colors were hard to come by in those days, not to speak of any kind of cloth).
