International Baccalaureate and A Level
Exam Results Summer 2011
Upper Sixth students at Sidcot had something to shout after another excellent year of outstanding A
Level results. The results perfectly complemented those of the International Baccalaureate Diploma
students who celebrated a record year of results back in early July.
The IB is marked out of 45 and has a University Admissions Score (UCAS score) that is used to
compare to A levels. This summer the average IB score was 33.5 which is equivalent to A*A*A* at
A Level. The average UCAS points per candidate for Sidcot’s A level students was 339 or AAB. The
combined average for A Level and IB at Sidcot was the UCAS equivalent of AAA. At A level, 17% of
grades achieved were A*’s, 48% were at A* or A, 73% were at B or above and 91% were at C and
above. Overall the pass rate was 100% and of the 57 A level students, 16 gained 3 or more A grades
(or above) and of these 9 gained 2 A*’s.
At A level, local students Will Cunningham gained ‘A*A*A*’ and will go on to study Business
Administration at Bath, Ben Hillman gained ‘A*A*A’ and will study Mathematics at Bath, Nicole
Tourigny gained ‘A*A*A’ and will study Human Sciences at Kings College London Barney Symons
gained ‘A*AA’ and will study Mechanical Engineering at Southampton.
International students who did particularly well include: Tony Sham who gained ‘A*A*AAB’ and
will study Statistics with Finance at LSE, Anna Vikulova gained ‘A*A*A*C’ and will study Law at
Southampton and Justin Chan gained ‘A*AAA’ and will study Accounting at Bath.
This year, the Sidcot IB results were better than ever with 25% of our students gaining over 40 points,
an improvement on the 32 points average score last year to 33.5. Andrea Zech from Germany, was
the highest achiever with a massive 44 points which is the UCAS points equivalent of A*A*A*A*A*
at A level. She will receive a bi-lingual diploma and also holds the record for the highest IB points
at Sidcot ever! Elena Weiss comes in a close second with a phenomenal 43 points (A*A*A*A*A)
and Ricarda Spahlinger and Diz Gotham both gained 41 points (A*A*A*A* and an A* at AS), Diz is
going to study Medicine at Imperial. Local girls, Elsa Bromhall gained 36 points (A*A*A*B) and will
study Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool and Clare Scally (with 35 points) will study
Linguistics at Leeds.
The so called ‘hard’ subjects of Maths and
Science continue to be Sidcot’s strongest
alongside Art in terms of student numbers and
results.
For example in Mathematics A Level, a whopping
37% of grades were A* and 62% were A*-A!
92% (out of a total of 35 students) gained A*,
A or B grades. Science also enjoyed brilliant
results with 79% gaining A* to B.
32% of Art students celebrated with A* grades
and 53% with A* or A, 68% gained A*or B.
