Dear All,
The Summer Festival, Sidcot’s major annual occasion, is a celebration of many
traditional events which include Sports Day, the Summer Ball for Years 11 to
13, the Fashion Show, the Art Exhibition, the Garden Party, the Gymkhana
culminating in the Dymond Speech Competition and Prize Giving on Saturday
evening. The Leavers’ Assembly including the Meeting for Worship is the final
event, which takes place on Sunday.
We welcome all of you to take the opportunity to visit the students’ exhibition
in the Arts Centre, which includes work from all the creative departments,
including Fine Art, Ceramics, Digital Media, Design and Technology, Fashion,
Music and Drama.
The production of the Arabian Nights which is to be held in a circus tent is an
adventurous and very exciting prospect. As with all productions at Sidcot it will
involve very many students and will be spectacular.

Dear All,
It’s hard to believe that June is here already and it’s not long before the end of
another busy school year. Firstly we would like to welcome our new Head, Iain
Kilpatrick, who is officially joining us on the 1st August. We all wish him and his
family a happy and successful time at Sidcot.
As part of the end of year proceedings and on behalf of the SCPTA, we
would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the Sidcot School
Summer Festival 2012.
It has been a busy time for the PTA and its supporters. We have been
involved in many different events and causes throughout the year, including the
recent parents’, teachers’ and friends’ Jubilee Quiz Night which was enjoyed
by all those who attended.
Following the success of this and last year’s wine tasting, we are now
looking for other suggestions for parents’ socials and would welcome ideas –
this is an informal event for us all to enjoy so please contact me with your ideas
via the SCPTA Group on the parents’ website.
Back to our main event which is the Olympic themed Summer Garden Party
on Saturday 23rd June. It starts at 1.30 pm and runs to 4pm. We have lots of
exciting entertainment including a Fly Wall, a 22ft Super Slide, a 12ft Bouncy
Castle as well as an open pool, football skills challenges, skittles and a coconut
shy. There’s great entertainment for the younger ones too including favourites
such as Hook a duck, Splat the rat, the famous Toilet Game, fun tattoos and
a nail bar. There are also stalls run by the school and a number of external run
stalls offering a wide variety of gifts.
For refreshments there will be the excellent SCPTA Café as well as
strawberries and ice cream and hot dogs for sale! And of course, to top it all
are the delicious school cream teas.
Needless to say that this event will not run without help from parents and I
must take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all those who helped
to organise this and all the other events throughout the school year. We very
much look forward to seeing you there and hope you have a lovely afternoon.

Senior Sports Day
Wednesday 20 June
Events take place throughout the day on the Sports Field. There are six
categories of events: Junior (boys and girls), Intermediate (boys and girls) and
Senior (boys and girls). The three Sidcot sporting houses are Nansen (green),
Shackleton (red) and Scott (blue).
10.40 Start of morning sports events including hurdles, 800m and
200m races and all field events. The discus, high jump, long
jump, triple jump, shot and javelin competitions will be held
throughout the day.
11.00 – 12.30 Refreshments in the Pavilion
12.30 – 13.00 Lunch for pupils in school or picnic on field with parents
13.30 Registration – Sports Field
13.35 – 14.30 Refreshments in the Pavilion
14.40 Start of afternoon sports events including 100m, 300m,
400m, 500m track events and relays
16.00 Visitors’ tea in the Pavilion – Parents only first,
followed by students
16.15 Results announced and Sports Awards presented
In addition to the House Trophies, cups are presented to the best boy and best
girl in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections. The Hermes Shield (for the
most impressive performance of the day), Davey Cup (for outstanding performance
over the term) and the 1500m cups are also presented on Sports Day.

19.00 – 21.00 Arabian Nights Extravaganza
“Arabian Nights”
Staged in the round, the drama department’s summer production this year
is Arabian Nights. Featuring performances from Junior and Senior School
students, the play will be performed in a big-top and features a range of
dramatised stories accompanied by percussion instruments. Whilst the
messages in the stories often make serious points, the physical and humorous
style will hopefully provide an entertaining and engaging evening!
A range of exciting events will also complement the performance. The Arabian
Nights production will begin with a fashion show, exhibiting the work of our
talented textiles students. On your way down to the lower gardens where the
tent will be, you may want to stop and watch the languages department’s
puppet shows that will be performed in foreign languages. A variety of musical
events, from Jazz to Rock, will entertain you, plus there is our fantastic art
exhibition, showcasing Sidcot students’ exam work that will be open prior to
the performances.
The Arabian Nights stories are some of the world’s great treasures. They have
existed for thousands of years, consisting of tales told in Persia, Arabia, India
and Asia. They have inspired writers, performers and artists the world over with
the ancient power of story. Come and join us for what we hope will be our own
week of inspiring and exciting events.

The Dymond Speech Competition
The Dymond Speech Competition was instituted
in 1911 by a descendant of Henry Dymond, a pupil
at the school from 1810-1815 and subsequently
Headmaster of Sidcot from 1854-1864. Henry
Dymond was famed for his most impressive voice
and the prize was originally instituted as the Dymond
Elocution Prize, but is now for a speech given on a
subject of the student’s choice, judged for its content
and method of presentation. The Honours’ Boards,
listing winners of the competition since it was
instituted, are in place outside the Old Library and a
portrait of Henry Dymond hangs in the Old Library.
Each year a panel of three distinguished adjudicators assesses the speaking
skills of the finalists at a formal evening occasion, which precedes the school
Prize Giving. To commemorate the centenary celebration, we have invited three
past Dymond Speech Competition winners to adjudicate this year’s event.

attend and U4 and above day students. It is the last school
function for members of the Upper Sixth (and some members
of the Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth) before they officially
become ‘Old Scholars’. Parents and friends are warmly
invited. Smart casuals should be worn. Parents and visitors in
the gallery – Upper Fifth and Sixth Form leavers to occupy
seating in the well.

SAGE - Sidcot Action for a Greener Environment
Two years ago a number of the Sidcot community decided to create an action
group to enhance the ‘green’ projects taking place on campus. The group quickly
established itself and decided to call itself SAGE, Sidcot Action for a Green
Environment. We have joined Eco Schools and have achieved their bronze award;
we are now working towards silver. There have been many new initiatives taking
place around the campus such as extending the recycling, insulation in roofs,
introducing class monitors, boarding house Ecoreps, energy monitoring, installation
of 17kw PV array and initiated a water use audit. Our latest success is winning the
Area Environmental Youth Award and are now competing for the regional award.
We hope that you will come and join us at the
Garden Party to look at the display of all our
projects and join us on an environmental tour
of the campus. We will be distributing clothes
recycling bags that we hope you will take with
you and return the full bags to school before the
29 July when ‘Phil the Bag’ will be coming to
collect all the bags.
