A Happy New Year to all members of the
Gleeson College community. On behalf
of the staff , I hope that all families had
a wonderful and Holy Christmas and we
wish everyone much success and joy
throughout 2011. I would like especially
to welcome all the new students and
their families to Gleeson College. We look
forward to working in partnership with
you over the coming years.
This year will be the twenty third year
of Gleeson College and I am sure it will
be another exciti ng and successful year
for our community. The Science Building
is now ready for use, the front car park
and Art Room lawn has been replanted,
the courtyard planter boxes have been
repaired and the old Science rooms are
being converted to the Flexible Learning
Centre and a Middle School classroom
(see photos on pg 3) . The migrati on of
our Campus and College ICT Network to
Microsoft has commenced and should be
completed during Semester 1 this year.
The Trade Training Centre is progressing
well and should be ready by the end of
February this year.
I would like to extend a very special
welcome to the new staff members who
have joined us for the fi rst ti me this year.
I pray that God will bless them and they
fi nd personal and professional fulfi lment
during their work at Gleeson College.

2010 YEAR 12 RESULTS
Our 2010 Year 12 students should be very
proud of their results. The overall 2010
Stage 2 pass rate was 91.6 %. For a school
that off ers wide curriculum opti ons for
students, the results indicate a very solid
success rate and very eff ecti ve teaching
and learning. We also had 11 students
achieving a TER of 90 or above and 10
Subject Merits. Laura Shelley was the Dux
of the College with a TER of 99.45 (Five A’s)
followed by Yanni Papadopolous 96.4 (Five
A’s) and Britt any Warren 96.2 (Five A’s).
The B and C results were well above the
State average but the A level was again
slightly below the State average, despite
59 students getti ng at least one “A”.
Another impressive stati sti c from 2010 was
the fact that 83% of our Year 12 students
have received first round University
and TAFE offers for 2011. This reflects
a well structured course and career
planning program for students at Gleeson
College. In 2011, we will conti nue our high
expectati ons of ourselves and our students
in all year levels, so that they can achieve
the best possible outcomes.

As a staff we began our year praying for
the New Year and New Decade. The Prayer
below refl ects our hopes for 2011 and
beyond. I look forward to meeti ng you at
our Informati on Evening on Monday 14
February.

Decade, let our prayer be:
Lord, grant us all your loving grace
in this year ahead to

GLEESON NOTICEBOARD
ATTENTION YEAR 12 STUDENTS:
Have you ever thought it would be handy to know what university is like before
you actually start your degree? And wouldn’t it be great if this helped you get your
SACE and counted towards your ATAR? You are now able to att end the University of
Adelaide part-ti me in 2011 if you are accepted as a Headstart Studies or Headstart
Accelerated Scholarship student.
HEADSTART STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP:
Students in Year 12 may now apply for a University subject as part of your Stage 2
studies, and will gain credit towards your SACE and have the grades counted towards
your ATAR. Tuiti on fees are waived for up to one subject in each semester, and eligibility
is based on Yr 11 grades.
HEADSTART ACCELERATED SCHOLARSHIP:
Accelerated students who have already completed one or more Stage 2 subjects (or
equivalent) and have less than a full workload may be eligible to apply for a Headstart
Accelerated Scholarship. This enables you to study up to 2 fi rst-year subjects each
semester at the University of Adelaide and be exempt from tuiti on fees. It provides you
with a challenge beyond school and the year 12 curriculum.
Students who subsequently enrol as a full-ti me student at the University will be granted
credit for studies taken as part of Headstart (as long as the course is relevant to your
degree). Headstart also helps you get used to university life and study before leaving
school.

2010 YEAR 8 & 9 ACTIVITIES DAY: Thursday 2nd December 2010

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING COURSES (VET)
Students who have been enrolled in VET courses for Semester 1 should have received or will soon receive informati on about
their courses (dates, ti mes, locati ons, things to bring etc). At present, Gleeson College supports 70% of a full year VET course
that is undertaken as a formal part of a student’s SACE. Students are responsible for their own transport and any individual
requirements such as safety boots or uniform. Each VET course varies in its length and cost but please contact me if further details
are required. These courses can provide students with a valuable transiti on into further training and employment opti ons once
they leave the College.
This semester we have approximately 35 students who are involved in a number of
industry areas including:

WORK EXPERIENCE
Many Year 10 students have begun classes in the Personal Learning Plan (PLP), a semester unit taken as part of SACE Stage1. This
subject is designed to help students make informed decisions about their personal development, educati on and training. It further
develops the capabiliti es previously undertaken in Work Educati on and includes Communicati on, Citi zenship, Personal Development,
Work and Learning. Work Experience will be off ered as a voluntary component should it fi t in with the students’ personal learning
plans. More informati on will be distributed to students shortly.
Work experience can provide a valuable opportunity for students in Years 10 – 12 to learn more about themselves in a potenti al
career of their choice. Work experience placements are negoti ated to be conducted at a mutually convenient ti me between
the employer, College and student. Many senior students will complete more structured work placements as a formal assessed
component of their VET course.
Any specifi c opportuniti es that arise are adverti sed through the student email system, daily noti ces or The Globe. Students are
encouraged to take up these opportuniti es or to contact me with any individual requests.
