VICTORIOUS DAMIANI SHOWS CLASS AT 2013 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The day began a little fresh but with
the promise of ideal weather for some
stellar performances at our 2013 College
Athletics Carnival last Friday 1 March.
Our Opening Ceremony saw each House,
led by their Captains, walk the traditional
march onto Gleeson Oval, marking the
battle commencement. Damiani, Fyfe
and Hughes were all on a mission to
take down reigning Athletics Champions,
McDonald House. The oval was awash
with colour as each House attempted to
outdo each other in the costume stakes,
only to be outdone by the fierce cheering
and House spirit evident at each of the
track and field events.
Scores were tight for most of the day with
first and second place closely contested
between Damiani and Hughes, whilst a
little further behind, McDonald and Fyfe
were engaged in their own showdown for
third position.
There were many standout performances
by our talented athletes in all year
levels, however special mention must
go to Damiani Year 11 student, Bowen
Martin (11 DSBRO). Bowen recorded
the highest individual score in the Age
Champions tally, scoring a whopping
76 points after coming first in seven
events! Congratulations also to our 2013
‘Champion of Champions’ Eddie Seisay
(12 DSBRO) and Tiffany Shrubsole (10
HSFEL), who sprinted to first place in their
respective 100m Sprint Champions Final.
After what has been somewhat of a
drought for Damiani House, they emerged
victorious and clear leaders, winning over
Hughes House by 38 points. Final scores
for the day were as follows:
Damiani 941
Hughes 903
Fyfe 687
McDonald 681
A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY
Continuing Teacher Learning and
Development at Gleeson College
In her recent book titled ‘Student
Centered Leadership’, Viviane Robinson
explores the five dimensions of leadership
that have significant impact on student
outcomes at school. Of the following,
which do you think has the greatest effect
on student outcomes?
• Establishing Goals and Expectations
• Resourcing Strategically
• Ensuring Quality Teaching
• Leading Teacher Learning and
Development
• Ensuring an Orderly and Safe
Environment.
• The answer may be a little
surprising; it is Leading Teacher
Learning and Development
Reference: “Student-Centered Leadership”
by Viviane Robinson (Jossey-Bass Leadership
Library in Education 2011)
The importance of teacher learning
cannot be underestimated. As John
Cotton Dana put it “Who dares to teach
must never cease to learn”.
In 2013, our staff members at Gleeson
College are all involved in professional
learning beyond the normal training
and development that is expected of all
teachers and education support officers.
This year the teaching staff have been
divided into two teams: those teachers
who wish to explore individual areas of
learning and those who are working on
the implementation of our new school
management tool, Scholaris. As always
the intended goal of these Professional
Learning Teams (PLT) is improved
outcomes for our students and their
families
In addition to the PLTs, all teachers belong
to a Professional Learning Community
(PLC) that specifically targets goal setting
and learning in a particular Key Learning
Area. In these groups teachers can explore
common tasks, performance standards
for students from Year 8 onwards and
moderation of work across classes of the
same subject at the same year level.
This year we will undertake two
Moderation Days, one in Term 2 and
one in Term 4, concentrating especially
on recognising and solving the issues
that lead to students underperforming
in common tasks. Ultimately the aim of
staff professional learning at Gleeson is
to provide an educational setting in which
all students can achieve at their very best
in every subject they undertake.
Athletics Carnival
The Gleeson College Athletics Carnival
was held on Friday 1 March. The buzz
around the school was palpable, even
in the early hours of the day when the
PE staff, Grounds staff and their helpers
arrived to set up for the day.
The array of colour and spirited cheering
signalled a very successful House sporting
event with students competing and
barracking hard for their House team
mates. All the events were well patronised
as the whole college moved around to
watch the field events at each rotation.
The track events saw all spectators under
the shade ports in House groups cheering
on their respective heroes. When it
was all said and done, Damiani House
emerged the victors, closely followed by
Hughes, Fyfe and McDonald.
A great deal of thanks is owed to Ms
Mitchell for her outstanding organisation
of the day (her inaugural Athletics Carnival
as Sports Development Officer), the PE
staff, Ground staff, House Coordinators,
teaching staff, parents and Old Scholars
who worked tirelessly to make the day
such a great success. A big thank you
also to the hard-working members of our
Parents and Friends Committee who put
on a sensational BBQ which sold out very
quickly!
Finally the biggest ‘thank you’ must go to
all the students who attended in record
numbers and participated in events or
just cheered on their mates; you made it
a great day. Well Done!
2013 Open Night
I would like to take this opportunity
to remind parents that the College
will close early on Tuesday 19 March
to accommodate preparations for our
annual Open Night. A letter should
have been received by all families both
by email and hard copy explaining the
organisation of the day. Thank you so
much for your assistance and support for
our Open Night.
God Bless
Mr J Corbo,
Acting Deputy Principal

DISCOVERING FRACTIONS...ONE CAKE AT A TIME!
Students of GILMIT Learning Team took
Mathematics to another level using an
assortment of homemade goodies to
explore the concept of fractions during
class on Wednesday 6 March.
Cheesecake, fudge, brownies and rocky
road all went under the knife in the
name of discovering equivalent fractions,
multiplying and dividing fractions and
manipulating denominators!
A big thankyou to all students and parents
who contributed to our efforts and a big
apology for sending the students home
with tummy’s full of sugar. Next lesson
we will investigate how much exercise is
required to burn off all that food!
McDONALD HOUSE MASS: Truth, Courage and Unity
This Wednesday, McDonald House came together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist. The theme of the Mass was
centred on the McDonald Crest and Motto of Truth, Courage and Unity.
Truth comes from the Gleeson 10 and asks us as a community to seek the truth in all that we do. Courage urges us to
challenge ourselves, to be leaders and have the strength and ability to pursue excellence. Unity reminds us that no one
is alone and as a McDonald group,
united as one, we are all here to help
each other achieve.
The readings and the Gospel were
about having courage and being
truthful during times of adversity and
challenges. A big thank you must
go to all students and staff involved,
especially Monsignor Swann for
celebrating the Mass with us, and
Mrs Lisa Cibich, Mr Richard Sellers
and Mr Yanni Papadopoulos for all
their preparation in organising our
McDonald House celebration.
Mr Adam Cibich,
McDonald House Coordinator

Continued from Page 1...
I would like to thank the wonderful staff
at Gleeson for helping facilitate the day.
Such an event cannot come together
without commitment and dedication
from many in our College Community.
Special thanks also to Tim James and
the members of the Parents and Friends
Committee for hosting a BBQ to feed the
hungry hoards of competitors and staff.
I would like to especially congratulate
each of the House Captains for their hard
work in the lead up to the carnival, which
ensured that all events were filled and
House spirit was high!
We now look forward to competing at
the Catholic Co-Ed Athletics Carnival
(Interschool) to be held at Santos Stadium
on Monday 25 March (Week 9).
YEAR 8 RETREAT: ‘Walking Humbly With Our God’
On Monday 25 February, all the Year 8
students attended their first Gleeson
College Retreat held at Nunyara, situated
in the beautiful hills of Belair.
When we arrived at the venue, we were
led into morning prayer by Mr Sellers and
shortly after, we had muffins for recess. As
soon as we were finished, we went right
into our activities. We were divided into
three groups and rotated from one activity
to another. Our first one was about loving
tenderly and through this activity we learnt
about the different ways we love. The love
we have for, pizza, music and sports greatly
differs from the love we have for our Mums,
Dads, brothers, sisters and others.
Our second activity was focussed on the
Gleeson 10 values and we discussed what
‘Justice’ really means. After this session we
had lunch. This was the delicious part of
the day! Because the grounds at the venue
were wet, we were not able to run around
and explore the place but that did not stop
anyone from having a great time.
The final activity was one that dealt with
‘Walking Humbly With Our God’. In this
activity all Year 8 students wrote some
personal goals on a piece of cloth which was
then stuck onto a banner. This banner will
be with us throughout our years at Gleeson
College and will be at our final graduation
in 2017. Wow! That seems heaps far away!!
Overall, the day was a great learning
experience for all of the Year 8s. We are
looking forward to Retreats in the coming
years. Thank you to all the teachers involved
for making the day special. The games we
played were fun and they helped us get to
know other members in our own year level.
COME IN NEW YORK: Gleeson Students SKYPE East Newport Middle School!
As we entered our classroom for the
first time this year we couldn’t help
but notice the four clocks on the
wall indicating the time in New York,
Moscow, London and Tokyo. Mr Milne
informed us that throughout the year
we would be speaking with Year 9
classes throughout the world using a
web program called Face 2 Faith and
the advanced technology of SKYPE!
On Wednesday 28 February we gathered
in anticipation to stage our first video
conference with East Newport Middle
School on Long Island in New York USA.
It was a very nervous beginning as
our Facilitator (who was stationed in
Seattle) requested we put down our
notes and speak from the heart about
our school, our friends, our leisure
time and our local community. Five
students from each school shared their
experiences and dispelled many myths
about each other’s country.
The second phase of the dialogue
was to share with each other our
understanding of faith and spirituality.
This was quite difficult for young
students to articulate and it being the
first experience for both schools a
little intimidating. Nevertheless, it was
truly revealing when students were
asked to share their experiences of
celebration, festivals
and ritual. Gleeson
began by sharing our
experiences of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, whilst East
Newport spoke about Halloween and Christmas.
We compared stories about our Credit Union Pageant and their
Macey’s Parade, as well as our Royal Show and Clipsal 500, The
Fringe and the Festival of Arts.
The highlight of the dialogue was when our students, aware of
the proximately of New York City to the Long Island school, asked
about their understanding of 9/11. It was humbling to realise
that two of the students’ fathers witnessed the destruction of
the Twin Towers first hand; as a businessman and a fireman. At
the time the students at East Newport were only one or two
years old.
Our Skype Video Conference was wonderfully managed by Mr
McDeed (Gleeson Network Manager), who in consultation with
Sanjay in India, ensured a perfect “feed”, meaning we spoke
uninterrupted for an entire hour. Thanks also to Mr Adarme for
videotaping the event and especially to Mr Milne for organising
this great experience.
We are now looking forward to our next Skype Video Conference,
which will be the second of eight schools we will be chatting with
throughout 2013!
GLEESON SOFTBALLERS SHOW PROWESS WITH THE BAT!
2013 Gleeson Girls Softball Team:
Back Row (L-R): Lisa Manocchio, Nakeita Snell, Sierra Fulcher, Ashley Snell, Stephanie
Stavropoulos. Front Row (L-R): Deana Taddeo, Madison Scott, Taylor Fiorita.
(Absent: Daniella Minniti, Tiffani Sipthorp)
Throughout Term 1, the Gleeson Girls
Softball Team has demonstrated a high
level of enthusiasm and effort in both
their attitude and approach to playing in
the Saturday Morning competition.
The girls have consolidated their fantastic
debut season from Term 4 2012 with
a renewed spirit of determination to
participate and move forward in Term 1,
2013. The team contains a mix of girls
from last year with some fresh recruits,
and as a whole the girls have played
extremely well together. We have enjoyed
two victories already this season against
formidable competition! In a large part,
their success is derived from a strong
commitment to training and to developing
their skill base. The girls train hard on the
College Oval every Thursday afternoon
and in particular, they relish their chance
to bat, which is a highly competent aspect
of their weekly game play. It is becoming
more evident that our girls enjoy batting
because the mercy rule has been enforced
several times on our opponents in recent
games!
Along with their great batting skills, the
girls also run the bases well and have
shown great improvement when fielding.
They have a strong team spirit that is a joy
to watch, and this positively affects their
motivation and encouragement of their
fellow team mates.
I look forward to coaching their final
two games for this summer season and
am hopeful we can reunite in Term 4
to give our opposing teams a force to
fear in 2013/14! I would like to say a big
‘thank you’ to the parents, grandparents
and friends, who come along weekly to
support the girls. Your cheering certainly
assists in rallying their confidence and level
of enthusiasm, as well as giving them the
opportunity to appreciate how awesome
their participation is in each game.
Our next battle is against St Peters College
at West Beach on Saturday 16 March.
Note that there is no game scheduled on
Saturday 9 March due to the long weekend.
Keep it up girls, you are doing great!
