CHALLENGING 5-DAY GRAMPIANS TREK FOR OUTDOOR ED CLASS
On Sunday, 6th May, our Stage 1 Outdoor
Educati on class arrived early at Gleeson
College at 7am for a trip to the Northern
Grampians.
Aft er a long drive we set up camp at Mt.
Stapylton Campground then headed
out for a night walk to a local historical
Indigenous rock art site. That night
we all decided it would be the perfect
opportunity to sleep out under the stars
but aft er we heard animals getti ng into
our food bags and felt a few drops of rain,
the safer opti on was to sleep in our tents.
Sti ll, this didn’t stop a kangaroo from
getti ng through two zips and trying to eat
the food out of our tents while we were
sleeping in it!
For the next four days the whole class put
in an extraordinary eff ort to climb Mt.
Stapylton, Mt. Diffi cult, the Pinnacles,
Beehive Falls and The Balconies. Aft er
spending fi ve days together no one
wanted to come back to reality but due to
kangaroos, rats and foxes eati ng our food
supplies we were all looking forward to a
good home cooked meal!
A huge thanks to Mrs Buscumb and Mr
Ackan for their hard work in getti ng us
safely through the trip.
GLEESON COLLEGE 24-HR ABSENTEE & LATE MESSAGEBANK: 8289 0438

Year 10 and 11 students at Gleeson
will have exams in Week 8 of this term.
For our Year 10 students it will be their
fi rst experience of exams and this can
be daunti ng for some students. At Year
10 the exams may be viewed as long
tests that give the students a chance
to show what they have learned in the
fi rst Semester of Senior School; they
should be viewed as an opportunity,
not a threat.
The Year 11 students have some
experience of the examinati on process
and in many cases the exams count for
their SACE grade. For both year levels
though, the lead up to the exams is a
learning process in itself. I know that
some students have started a revision
program in their ‘harder’ subjects but
all students should be revising work
from last term as a part of their weekly
homework routi ne. The idea of doing
a litt le study oft en and regularly is
substanti ally bett er that giving one
enormous eff ort the night before the
exam. So start now, even a few minutes
COLLEGE MASS
Wednesday 16th May 2012
Last week we celebrated Mary
Our Mother during College Mass.
START STUDYING NOW!
of revision for each examinable subject
will reap benefi ts in Exam Week.
Pentecost Sunday
This Sunday, May 27th, 50 days aft er
Easter, is Pentecost Sunday, celebrati ng
the end of the Easter Season and the
coming of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Holy Spirit brings to us Gift s of
the Spirit including wisdom, courage,
knowledge and understanding; and
Fruits of the Spirit including love, joy,
pati ence, kindness and gentleness.
Let us pray that in our lives we can
recognize and affi rm the gift s of others,
using our gift s and the fruits of the Spirit
to bring love and hope to those in our
lives. Let us always be open to seeing the
acti on of the Holy Spirit in others and the
world around us:
Come, Holy Spirit, fi ll the hearts
of the faithful and kindle in us
the fi re of your love.
HPV Pedal Prix
This weekend will see the Gleeson
HPV (Human Powered Vehicles) team
competi ng in the HPV Pedal Prix – Round
1. The event is on this Sunday at Victoria
Park from 10:00-4:00pm. We have three
teams entered: Senior Secondary, Junior
Secondary and Open Division. All of
our teams are full, with the maximum
number of riders and we have a lot of
new riders in our Junior team. Quite
a few old scholars and teachers will be
riding in our Open team.
Maps are available on the Pedal Prix
website and we are in the pits near the
control centre this year. Hope to see you
there!
Knockout Sport
As you may have read in previous issues
of The Globe, many students have been
involved in State Knockout Sport over the
past couple of weeks. This competi ti on
sees schools from across the State pitt ed
against each other over two terms in a
variety of sports, culminati ng in a State
fi nal towards the end of the year.
At ti mes, these games will take students
out of their normal lessons so it is very
important that students are up-todate
with their school work and keen
to catch up on any work missed whilst
competi ng for the College. Parti cipati ng
students are required to check with their
subject teachers before playing in State
Knockout games to ensure that they stay
in touch with the curriculum.
Gleeson has a great record in these
competi ti ons and we are certainly
looking forward to a successful 2012.
Mr J Corbo,
Acti ng Deputy Principal
With Sympathy
We off er our sincere sympathy
to Daniel Mosbey (9 MMMAH)
whose maternal great-grandfather
passed away recently.
The College Community will keep
Daniel and the Mosbey family in
our prayers.
CSYMA REGIONAL GATHERING @ GLEESON COLLEGE
On Sunday 20th May, students from
St Colombia’s, St Frances De Sales and
Rostrevor Colleges came to Gleeson
College to join with us for a Regional
CSYMA gathering.
The day began with a couple of fun
games to get everyone pumped,
followed by a session run by Angelica,
Britt any, Chardea and Madi, which
was based on our life’s journey and
focussed on how we should be grateful
for all we have.
Aft er that, we moved to the College
Chapel for Mass celebrated by
Monsignor John Swann, during which
live music was played that really
enhanced the ceremony. Mass was
followed by a yummy sausage sizzle
that was kindly prepared by some
parents of Gleeson College CSYMA
students. This was a good opportunity
for everyone to mingle and learn a bit
about each other. Aft er lunch we went
to the oval to play a game of “Alternate
Frisbee”. This was a fun event full of
exciti ng moments and was won by
Rostrevor College.
The session aft er lunch was presented
by Dominic, Zoe, Radhika and Lauran.
This session was all about Mary, Jesus’
mother, and the infl uence that mothers
have in our lives. Aft er watching an
inspiring movie that Matt hew had
organised, everyone was talking about
appreciati ng their mothers even more.
For aft ernoon tea, Mrs Denton
provided us with sweets, including
home-made cakes and biscuits. The day
wrapped up with a Quiz about Mary.
Aft er fi nal thanks and farewells, the
day concluded with everyone heading
home looking forward to the next ti me
that we will all get together.
A Student Perspecti ve...
“I really enjoyed our CSYMA Retreat!
It was such a good day and I had
so much fun and got to meet
many new friends.
The day was about refl ecti ng on our lives
and our relati onship with God.
It was such a great experience and
I just can’t wait for the next one!”
YEAR 8 STUDENTS DESIGN ELASTIC-POWERED CARS!
During this term every Year 8 class, has
learnt about Energy and the diff erent
forms it can take. One such type is Elasti c
Potenti al Energy!
All students were paired up and given the
Junkyard Challenge, where students had to
use materials that they could fi nd around
their homes and use them to construct
an elasti c powered vehicle! Each Year 8
Science/Mathemati cs teacher then picked
two class-winning cars based on the
distance travelled, and inventi ve design.
On Monday 21st May, Gleeson held the
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathemati cs) Project Grand Race Off !
For this, each of the winning designs had
two fi nal runs and the best distance was
recorded and each car’s design was also
evaluated.
Each team did really well, and there were
some great distances recorded…however
you’ll have to come along to the STEM Expo
on Wednesday 20th of June to see who is to
be crowned the grand winner!
THE ROYAL GLEESON SHOW: Stage 1 Business & Enterprise
As a part of Stage 1 Business and
Enterprise Studies, students developed
their enterprise skills by successfully
carrying out a marketplace in the
Gleeson College courtyard during
lunchti me on Thursday 17th May 2012.
The theme of the day was “The Royal
Gleeson Show” and all profi ts will be
going towards the Brain Foundati on
SA in memory of Nicola Subotkiewicz.
Students were required to organise
themselves into groups to develop
a business plan. They were required
to think about the product/s they
would like to sell and if it would be a
suitable choice for the task. Students
were required to think about aspects
including their business name, mission,
marketi ng aspects including adverti sing
and promoti on, cash budgeti ng,
locati on and occupati onal, health,
safety and welfare.
The goods sold to staff and students
of Gleeson College comprised of show
bags, hot chips, hot dogs, lollies and
ice-cream. In total, $788.20 profi t was
raised.
The students should be congratulated
on their eff orts! A big thank you to all
the staff , students and parents who
helped make this event very positi ve
and successful!
Mrs Nancy Mastrogiacomo,
STAGE 2 FOOD & HOSPITALITY CULTURAL CAFE
On Tuesday 15th May, the Year 12
Food and Hospitality students held a
Cultural Café in the Dining room of the
Rec Centre. We invited a number of
paying guests including Gleeson Staff
and our family members.
We chose groups of 2 to 3 and decided
on a specifi c culture to represent with
a two course meal .We trialled the
recipes to ensure they were suitable
and achievable. The cultures chosen
were Mexican, American, Italian,
Indian, Thai, English and Greek.
Before the guests arrived, lots of
preparati on and hard work took place
to ensure the café ran smoothly and all
dishes were ready to serve by 1:05pm.
Serving 6-8 people on each table ended
up being a challenge. Yet with use of
teamwork, planning and organisati on
the class successfully catered for
the 2012 Cultural Café event. It was
amazing that despite the ‘chaos’ in the
kitchen during service, the atmosphere
in the dining room was peaceful.
The Cultural Café was a successful
functi on that showcased a range of
unique cultures. The meals prepared
looked and tasted amazing and would
be considered café quality. It was a
fantasti c and enjoyable day for both
guests and the Year 12 Food and
Hospitality class.
