Boyd, Smith are top senior athletes<br />

Janelle Boyd and Russell Smith were<br />

chosen as the Class of <strong>2009</strong>’s<br />

Outstanding <strong>Senior</strong> Athletes at <strong>Molloy</strong>’s<br />

annual Sports Awards Night on May<br />

14 in the Jack Curran Gym.<br />

Boyd was a four-year varsity softball<br />

player, during which time her teams<br />

have won two CHSAA Brooklyn-<br />

Queens Sectional Championships and<br />

two CHSAA City Championships.<br />

Boyd, who was the No. 1 pitcher,<br />

team captain and team MVP in her<br />

senior season, had a regular season<br />

league won-loss record of 5-0 with a<br />

0.00 Earned Run Average.<br />

She was named to the CHSAA All-<br />

League teams as both a junior and<br />

senior.<br />

“I was really shocked when I won,”<br />

Boyd said. “Everybody was saying,<br />

‘You’re going to win it; you’re going to<br />

win it,’ but I didn’t believe it until they<br />

announced my name.”<br />

Boyd’s shutout streak ended in the<br />

second round of the CHSAA playoffs<br />

but she still led her team to another title<br />

as <strong>Molloy</strong> defeated St. John’s Prep 11-<br />

0 in five innings in the quarterfinals,<br />

Fontbonne Hall 14-3 in the semifinals,<br />

and St. Francis Prep 13-0 and 1-0 in<br />

the double elimination finals.<br />

Smith, meanwhile, was a three-year<br />

member of the boys varsity basketball<br />

team and team captain and MVP as a<br />

senior.<br />

He was a CHSAA All-League<br />

Guidance Counselor Mrs. Rachel<br />

Galla said, “Congratulations and good<br />

luck to the Class of <strong>2009</strong>! Enjoy this<br />

next stage of life. You will be missed.”<br />

Band director Mr. Greg Leonardo<br />

had a message for his musicians.<br />

“To all the band seniors: It’s been a<br />

great four years. Good luck in college<br />

and keep making music!” Mr. Leonardo<br />

said.<br />

Now that members of the Class of<br />

selection and named to the All-Queens<br />

and All-City teams as both a junior and<br />

senior.<br />

During his career, he was named to<br />

four all-tournament teams and was the<br />

Most Valuable Player in two of those<br />

tournaments.<br />

As a senior, Smith was named to both<br />

the All-State and All-Tri State teams.<br />

He was the MVP of the Regional<br />

Jordan Classic featuring the best players<br />

in the New York tri-state area.<br />

Smith’s 1,617 career points put him<br />

third on <strong>Molloy</strong>’s all-time scoring list<br />

behind Kenny Anderson, who scored<br />

2,621 points in a four-year varsity<br />

career from 1985 to 1989) and Willie<br />

Hall, who scored 1,717 points from<br />

1955 to 1958.<br />

Smith scored 823 points as a senior<br />

to break <strong>Molloy</strong>’s single season scoring<br />

record previously set by Anderson in<br />

the 1988-89 season.<br />

Several <strong>Molloy</strong> teams won<br />

championships under the leadership of<br />

the Class of <strong>2009</strong>.<br />

The Varsity Golf A team won its 12th<br />

consecutive CHSAA Brooklyn-<br />

Queens championship.<br />

The Varsity Bowling team won its<br />

ninth CHSAA City championship.<br />

The Varsity Girls Soccer team won<br />

the CHSAA B Division championship.<br />

The Varsity Boys Soccer team won<br />

the CHSAA City championship.<br />

Teachers say goodbye<br />

The Varsity Softball team won the Brooklyn-Queens championship.<br />

The Boys Varsity Tennis team won<br />

the CHSAA B Division championship.<br />

The Girls Varsity Track and Field<br />

team won the CHSAA Outdoor<br />

Brooklyn-Queens championship.<br />

The Boys Varsity Track and Field<br />

team won both the Indoor and Outdoor<br />

Brooklyn-Queens championships.<br />

<strong>Molloy</strong>’s Varsity teams each honored<br />

two athletes with a Most Valuable<br />

Player Award for its top performer and<br />

a Coach’s Award for leadership, team<br />

spirit and performance.<br />

<strong>2009</strong> have graduated, Mr. Charlie<br />

Flood, Class of 1968 and Director of<br />

Alumni Relations and the Stanner<br />

Alumni Association, said:<br />

but it is your first day as a member of<br />

the Stanner Alumni Association.<br />
