Boyd, Smith are top senior athletes
Janelle Boyd and Russell Smith were
chosen as the Class of 2009’s
Outstanding Senior Athletes at Molloy’s
annual Sports Awards Night on May
14 in the Jack Curran Gym.
Boyd was a four-year varsity softball
player, during which time her teams
have won two CHSAA Brooklyn-
Queens Sectional Championships and
two CHSAA City Championships.
Boyd, who was the No. 1 pitcher,
team captain and team MVP in her
senior season, had a regular season
league won-loss record of 5-0 with a
0.00 Earned Run Average.
She was named to the CHSAA All-
League teams as both a junior and
senior.
“I was really shocked when I won,”
Boyd said. “Everybody was saying,
‘You’re going to win it; you’re going to
win it,’ but I didn’t believe it until they
announced my name.”
Boyd’s shutout streak ended in the
second round of the CHSAA playoffs
but she still led her team to another title
as Molloy defeated St. John’s Prep 11-
0 in five innings in the quarterfinals,
Fontbonne Hall 14-3 in the semifinals,
and St. Francis Prep 13-0 and 1-0 in
the double elimination finals.
Smith, meanwhile, was a three-year
member of the boys varsity basketball
team and team captain and MVP as a
senior.
He was a CHSAA All-League

Galla said, “Congratulations and good
luck to the Class of 2009! Enjoy this
next stage of life. You will be missed.”
Band director Mr. Greg Leonardo
had a message for his musicians.
“To all the band seniors: It’s been a
great four years. Good luck in college
and keep making music!” Mr. Leonardo
said.
Now that members of the Class of
selection and named to the All-Queens
and All-City teams as both a junior and
senior.
During his career, he was named to
four all-tournament teams and was the
Most Valuable Player in two of those
tournaments.
As a senior, Smith was named to both
the All-State and All-Tri State teams.
He was the MVP of the Regional
Jordan Classic featuring the best players
in the New York tri-state area.
Smith’s 1,617 career points put him
third on Molloy’s all-time scoring list
behind Kenny Anderson, who scored
2,621 points in a four-year varsity
career from 1985 to 1989) and Willie
Hall, who scored 1,717 points from
1955 to 1958.
Smith scored 823 points as a senior
to break Molloy’s single season scoring
record previously set by Anderson in
the 1988-89 season.
Several Molloy teams won
championships under the leadership of
the Class of 2009.
The Varsity Golf A team won its 12th
consecutive CHSAA Brooklyn-
Queens championship.
The Varsity Bowling team won its
ninth CHSAA City championship.
The Varsity Girls Soccer team won
the CHSAA B Division championship.
The Varsity Boys Soccer team won
the CHSAA City championship.

The Varsity Softball team won the Brooklyn-Queens championship.
The Boys Varsity Tennis team won
the CHSAA B Division championship.
The Girls Varsity Track and Field
team won the CHSAA Outdoor
Brooklyn-Queens championship.
The Boys Varsity Track and Field
team won both the Indoor and Outdoor
Brooklyn-Queens championships.
Molloy’s Varsity teams each honored
two athletes with a Most Valuable
Player Award for its top performer and
a Coach’s Award for leadership, team
spirit and performance.
