Hwu, Joseph show boys rule in 2010

For the first time since the first coed
graduating class in 2004, two boys
addressed their classmates as the
valedictorian and salutatorian at the
53rd Commencement Exercises of
Archbishop Molloy High School at
Colden Auditorium at Queens College.
Christopher Hwu, who was the
valedictorian, and Augustin Joseph,
who was salutatorian, were only the
third and fourth boys to earn these
honors in seven years.
They were told by Assistant Principal
Mr. Ed Jennings that they were the top
two ranked students in the Class of
2010 three weeks after they returned
to school from Easter vacation.
“It’s a great honor for us and them,”
said Mr. Jennings. “They are at the top
of Molloy, so we see great things in their
future.”
Hwu and Joseph were not only in the
same 4E Homeroom, AP Calculus BC
and AP Composition classes, they were
involved in the same after-school
activities: Intigrated Science
Association, Science Olympiad,
Investment Club, and Math League.
Hwu and Joseph worked with Public
Speaking teacher Ms. Mary Pat
Gannon before the ceremony.
“The valedictorian’s speech provides
exhortation or persuades the audience
to do something, and appeals to
emotion and logic, while the salutatorian
welcomes the audience to the
graduation,” said Ms. Gannon, who has
worked with graduation speakers for

at least 10 years.
Ms. Gannon said the hardest task in
writing a graduation speech is avoiding
the clichés, recapping the last four years
in seven-minutes and delivering the
message of the school motto, “Not for
school, but for life.”
Ms. Gannon enjoyed working with
Hwu and Joseph.
“They are incredible, dedicated, and
hardworking,” she said.
Hwu and Joseph said they weren’t
nervous before their graduation
speeches.
Joseph said that public speaking is
one of his stronger suits and Hwu had
already made a such a speech as the
salutatorian of his grade school.
Their teachers and friends say they are
extremely hard working individuals.
Ms. Jeanne Longerano said of Hwu,
“It was a privilege and a great joy to
have had the opportunity to play a small
part in his education. His dedication to
his studies and his willingness to accept
challenges is what defines Chris.”
Mr. Michael Nadeau said of Joseph,
“He approached his studies in a manner
that showed that he was not in it for the
sole purpose of going to the next level
of education; he was looking to grow
in every aspect of his life. I am always
impressed with Augustin’s sense of
responsibility and compassion.”
One of Hwu’s close friends, Shawn
Adams, said, “He was one of the
hardest working and academically
motivated individuals I have ever met.”
Ken Barretto said that Joseph
deserved to become the Class of 2010
salutatorian and was glad to see him
up there at the ceremony.
When asked how much time they
spent on their school work, Hwu said,
“I study a lot. I spend six hours a day
and six hours over the weekend.”
Joseph said, “I study, but I mostly
listen to the teacher in class and I
absorb and understand the material.”
Hwu will attend Cornell University
and major in math with a focus on a
pre-med track.
Joseph will attend Virginia
Commonwealth University for it eightyear
medical school program which
guarantees him a seat in the university’s
medical school after his four years of
undergraudate education.
Hwu and Joseph aren’t the only
seniors who excelled academically.
The Class of 2010 sends 23
members to universities ranked among
the top 50: Harvard, MIT, Columbia,
Cornell, Virginia, Brandeis, NYU,
Rochester, RPI, Penn State, Tulane.
Eight others seniors are going to top
50 liberal arts colleges: Amherst,
Vassar, Smith, Barnard, Sarah
Lawrence, Bucknell, and Gettysburg.

CHSAA City
Champion, four All-
League players, four
players selected to All-
Queens teams, two
players on All-City
teams, one a member of
an All-American relay
team and one honorable
mention All-American.
Skeivys was a varsity
swimmer for four years,
the team captain as a
senior, and a two-time
league MVP.
She was undefeated
for four years in the 100-
yard breaststroke and
the 200-yard individual
medley in both the dual
meet seasons and
CHSAA championship
meets.
Skeivys will attend
Iona College on a
swimming scholarship in
the fall.

Few seniors earn athletic scholarships

While many graduating seniors will try
to continue their athletic careers by
trying out for a college team, at least
14 Stanners will carry on their careers
with athletic scholarships.
Kyra Aloizos (Binghamton
University), Kelly Guerriero (College
of Mount St. Vincent), Marielle Duryea
(Adelphi University) and Ernest Rouse
(Harvard University) have basketball
scholarships.
8 win ACE scholarship
Eight seniors were ACE Mentor
Program Scholarship Winners for
2010: Louis Lamia, Denisa Lleshi,
Andrea Martinez, Alexia Sanchez,
Olivia Sell, Andy Singh, and Jackeline
Vargas and Gary Ye.
They won scholarships totaling
$27,000.
The Molloy faculty offers its last
goodbyes to the Class of 2010:

to the state finals.
He was named All-League, All-
Queens and All-City as a junior and a
senior.
He was named City Player of the
Year as a junior and was an Honorable
Mention All-American as a senior.
He will attend Providence College on
a soccer scholarship this fall.
In addition to these two awards, the
outstanding student-athlete in each
sport was named and each team
handed out a Coach’s Award and
picked a Most Valuable Player.

Molloy Athletic Director Mr. Mike
McCleary is proud of these Stanners
because it is difficult to get any type of
athletic scholarship due to the fact that
colleges devote more scholarship
money to academics than athletics.
As a result, Mr. McCleary said, “We
want the athletes to excel academically
difference in the life and history of
Molloy. By being students here for four
years, you became brothers and sisters
for life. Seniors, in the Molloy family
you remain for time and eternity in your
family’s love and in the hearts of Jesus
and Mary. Please stay close to Molloy
and help us in the days ahead to keep
St. Marcellin Champagnat’s mission
ever alive — to make Jesus known and
loved — for many future Stanners.”

rewards both an athlete’s grades along
with playing ability.”
Ruocco, a goalkeeper, has a partial
athletic scholarship worth $15,000.
“In my first year at Marist I will most
likely be the backup goalkeeper but I
am hopeful to be the starter for my
sophomore until my senior year,”
Ruocco said.
Davis, a forward, has a scholarship
that will pay about two-thirds of his
tuition. “I hope to compete for a starting
position right away in my freshman
year,” he said. “I want to get a lot of
playing time in my first year.”
Defender Whelan’s scholarship will
pay about half his tuition. “I am hoping
to play right away freshman year and I
am hoping to be a permanent starter
for all four years,” he said.
