Chan & Kotnik speak at Graduation

Two future Ivy Leaguers,
Valedictorian Nicholas Chan and
Salutatorian Stephanie Kotnik, who
were the two speakers at the 52nd
Commencement Exercises of
Archbishop Molloy High School on
Saturday May 30th at Colden
Auditorium at Queens College.
Chan and Kotnik were chosen
because their hard work and
perserverance throughout their four
years at Molloy earned them the first
and second highest academic averages,
respectively, in the Class of 2009,
Chan had found out from Assistant
Principal Mr. Ed Jennings that he
became only the second boy since
Molloy graduated its first coed class in
2004 to be selected valedictorian when
he returned to school after Easter.
“I was hoping to achieve it, but,
nonetheless, it was a pleasant surprise,”
Chan said.
Chan doesn’t believe the fact that he
is only the second boy in six years to
speak at a Molloy graduation ceremony
is any reflection on the academic ability
of male Stanners compared to girls but
rather just depends on the makeup of
each individual class.
Nevertheless, the fact that he is the
first male valedictorian since 2004 made
him a bit nervous.
“I have to live up to the expectations,”
he said, “so it makes it extra special for
me.”
Chan’s valedictory speech discussed
the importance of never giving up and
its theme was that Stanners must always
have hope for future, no matter what
comes their way.
Chan said he was pretty satisfied with
his four years at Molloy and pleased to
have made close friendships.
“Although it’s tough and a little sad,
we must go on,” said Chan, who will
enroll in Columbia University’s School
of Engineering and Applied Science in
the fall to study applied mathematics.
He chose mathematics as a major
because of its versatility.
“It has many branches and I could
go into many different fields with this
major,” said Chan, who is one of six
members of the Class of 2009 who will
attend Ivy League schools.
Another future Ivy Leaguer is Kotnik,
the Salutatorian for the Class of 2009,
who will enroll at the University of
Pennsylvania in the fall.
She said she was very pleased to
have earned the right to be one of the
speakers at graduation.
“I was very surprised to be chosen
as salutatorian,” she said. “It’s a great
honor, and I’m very proud to have
achieved it, but I wasn’t anticipating it
at all.”
Kotnik was delighted when she was
told by Mr. Jennings she was the class
salutatorian after Easter break.
“It’s great to see how all my hard
work over the past four years led up to
this,” she said.
In her salutatorian speech, Kotnik
focused on her past four years at
Molloy and talked about the memories
she and her fellow Stanners made
during those years.
Kotnik has had previous experience
speaking at graduation ceremonies.
“I was actually valedictorian at my
grammar school,” she said, “so I’ve had
the experience of speaking in front of
people before. However, it’s a lot
different speaking in front of the 40 kids
in my grade school class and the 400
kids in Molloy’s class of ’09.”
Kotnik said she’s sad to be leaving
Molloy but at the same time very
excited to be starting college, where she

plans to major in communications and
journalism with the hope of becoming
a successful writer in the future.
English teacher Ms. Mary Pat
Gannon taught both Chan and Kotnik
in AP Literature.
“Nick was a dedicated student
whose work was always done on time,”
she said. “Stephanie has innate writing
ability. She’s intuitive and pays attention
to the nuances of words and their
meanings.”
Both Chan and Kotnik showed over
their four years at Molloy the academic
dedication it takes to be the best in a
graduating class full of good students.
Several Molloy teachers wanted to
say goodbye to the Class of 2009.
Italian teacher Signora Palmina
Dionisi said, “A tutti i miei studenti
d’italiano: E` stato un piacere
conoscervi e di insegnarvi la lingua della
bell’Italia.
“Tanti auguri per un avvenire
prosperoso. In bocca al lupo! Con
affetto sempre,” she said.
Spanish teacher and softball coach
Mr. Lou Santos said, “I want to wish
the 2009 graduating class good luck on
their achievements.”
“I would personally like to say to our
Varsity Softball players: Thank you for
all the wonderful memories that you
have given me. Your dedication and
hard work has paid off in so many ways.
Eight other seniors will attend
universities ranked among the nation’s
top 25: Nicole Bonilla (Cornell); Ivan
Collado (Michigan); Manuel Cordero
(Columbia); Brittany Dombrowski
(Cornell); Christopher Kabelac
(Georgetown); Kristen Lasak (Notre
Dame); David Olusoga (Cornell); and
Dorota Sawicki (UCLA).
In addition, five more seniors will
enroll in Top 25 liberal arts colleges:
Cailin Chang (Hamilton); Patrick
Collins (U.S. Naval Academy); Angela
Dumlao (Vassar); Connor Hubbard
(Davidson); and Emily Tansey (Mount
Holyoke).

Class of ’09 well
Please remember that the door to

Santos said.
Earth Science teacher Mr. Mark Verdi
said, “Spring is always such a bitter
sweet time of the year for me. Having
watched the seniors grow into such
fineyoung men and women, I find myself
feeling melancholy that you are leaving.
“On the other had I am happy that
you are ready for the next step in life.
All the best of luck and remember to
come back and visit,” Mr. Verdi said.
History teacher Mr. John Mecca said,
“Try to keep in mind what I told you
last year as juniors: You are part of
America’s hope for a brighter future. I
trust in you.”

Boyd, Smith are top senior athletes
Janelle Boyd and Russell Smith were
chosen as the Class of 2009’s
Outstanding Senior Athletes at Molloy’s
annual Sports Awards Night on May
14 in the Jack Curran Gym.
Boyd was a four-year varsity softball
player, during which time her teams
have won two CHSAA Brooklyn-
Queens Sectional Championships and
two CHSAA City Championships.
Boyd, who was the No. 1 pitcher,
team captain and team MVP in her
senior season, had a regular season
league won-loss record of 5-0 with a
0.00 Earned Run Average.
She was named to the CHSAA All-
League teams as both a junior and
senior.
“I was really shocked when I won,”
Boyd said. “Everybody was saying,
‘You’re going to win it; you’re going to
win it,’ but I didn’t believe it until they
announced my name.”
Boyd’s shutout streak ended in the
second round of the CHSAA playoffs
but she still led her team to another title
as Molloy defeated St. John’s Prep 11-
0 in five innings in the quarterfinals,
Fontbonne Hall 14-3 in the semifinals,
and St. Francis Prep 13-0 and 1-0 in
the double elimination finals.
Smith, meanwhile, was a three-year
member of the boys varsity basketball
team and team captain and MVP as a
senior.
He was a CHSAA All-League

Galla said, “Congratulations and good
luck to the Class of 2009! Enjoy this
next stage of life. You will be missed.”
Band director Mr. Greg Leonardo
had a message for his musicians.
“To all the band seniors: It’s been a
great four years. Good luck in college
and keep making music!” Mr. Leonardo
said.
Now that members of the Class of
selection and named to the All-Queens
and All-City teams as both a junior and
senior.
During his career, he was named to
four all-tournament teams and was the
Most Valuable Player in two of those
tournaments.
As a senior, Smith was named to both
the All-State and All-Tri State teams.
He was the MVP of the Regional
Jordan Classic featuring the best players
in the New York tri-state area.
Smith’s 1,617 career points put him
third on Molloy’s all-time scoring list
behind Kenny Anderson, who scored
2,621 points in a four-year varsity
career from 1985 to 1989) and Willie
Hall, who scored 1,717 points from
1955 to 1958.
Smith scored 823 points as a senior
to break Molloy’s single season scoring
record previously set by Anderson in
the 1988-89 season.
Several Molloy teams won
championships under the leadership of
the Class of 2009.
The Varsity Golf A team won its 12th
consecutive CHSAA Brooklyn-
Queens championship.
The Varsity Bowling team won its
ninth CHSAA City championship.
The Varsity Girls Soccer team won
the CHSAA B Division championship.
The Varsity Boys Soccer team won
the CHSAA City championship.

Prom fashion hits and misses

Molloy’s Class of 2009 arrived at
Beckwith Pointe in New Rochelle on
the evening of Wednesday, May 20
with the goal of not only having a good
time, but looking good doing it.
Most people succeeded, but, sadly,
a few Stanners failed.
The best dressed girls were Dorota
Sawicki and Lauren Kim because they
took risks that paid off.
Sawicki wore a blue, one shoulder
strap, floor-length dress.
The shoulder strap was decorated
with rosettes that seemed very organic
and added to the light beauty of the
dress. It looked really expensive and
very Valentino.
“That’s what I was going for,” said
Sawicki of the famous fashion
designer’s style.
Trying to choose a dress that looks
to be very expensive can be risky
because it can end up looking cheap
but Sawicki pulled it off with elegance
and grace.
Kim, meanwhile, looked fierce in her
short, strapless, sapphire blue dress
that was very chic.
Her hair was done in her usual,
impeccable bob and her makeup was
simple.
It was the simplicity of her look and
the fact that her dress did not touch the
floor that made her stand out and gave
her look a slight edginess when
compared to the other outfits that night.
The guys pretty much all looked the
same in their rented tuxes, with no one
truly standing out, making it impossible
for any one of them to earn the coveted
title of “Best Dressed Man.”
However, some boys did not realize
that wearing just any type of formal
attire will do.
Those wearing white or light blue
tuxes took an unnecessary risk.
Not only is black much more chic and
expensive looking, but white or light
blue tuxedos that are not customed
tailored can make the wearer look as if
he found his outfit off a Goodwill rack.
The girls, however, turned out in a
large variety of prom dresses and,
thanks to obsessive posting on the
Molloy Senior Prom Dresses ’09
Facebook page, almost no one wore
the same dress.
For those who made that horrible
faux pas, I hope you did not worry too
much about it and were able to take
pictures with your identical twin and
make a joke out of it. Always keep in
mind that if someone wore the same
dress as you did, your dress was
probably not a bad choice.
Apart from twin dresses, there were
some other fashion mishaps.
Some of the animal prints mixed with
other patterns were a little too over the
top and the color of some dresses just
didn’t suit the girls wearing them.
But all in all, most people did a good
job dressing for their senior prom.
Few people looked really bad as
looked impeccable and even the best
of us can make a few mistakes here
and there in our fashion choices.
But to Sawicki and Kim: You did a
fabulous job!
