Students in Year 7 were
delighted to receive a free
book as part of a government
initiative to encourage reading.
All 252 students in the year were
able to choose from a variety of titles
offered by the Book Trust, including
exciting adventure stories, poetry
and non-fiction. Year 7 student Justin
Roberts said: “I chose the poetry
book, which has a poem for each day
Two Y11 drama students,
Jessica Osborne-Lax and
Maisie Jenkinson, achieved
100% in their GCSE Drama, making
them two of the top 10 students
in the country. Their amazing
achievement was recognised by the
exam board Edexcel when they sent
a letter of congratulations to the
school.
Drama teacher, Mrs Nixon-Young, said
“I am absolutely thrilled. All of the class
gave their best performances in their
exam and should be very proud of their
achievements. I was at home recovering
from an operation when Miss Edwards
phoned me to deliver the news. It was
the best get well medicine I could have
asked for. Jess and Maisie were brilliant
students who constantly worked to
their full potential and I am elated that
their hard work and talent have been
rewarded. Their performances as Greta
and Gregor from Berkoff’s adaptation of
Metamorphosis were exceptional. I was
mesmerised by their stage presence. As
a teacher there is nothing more that you
Year 7 students receive their free book
of the year. I’ve enjoyed reading them
– some are very funny!” English KS3
co-ordinator, Mr Murray, said: “This is
the second year we’ve been able to
offer a free book to Year 7 students and
it’s an excellent way for them to start
English in secondary school, especially
as we incorporate the scheme into
Accelerated Reader, a programme
designed to encourage and develop
reading skills.”
Outstanding Achievement for Y11 Drama students
can ask for; I was blessed with a fantastic
group.”
Students of drama have to achieve 97%
in order to achieve an A* grade at GCSE.
This highlights the ability and dedication
that is needed to gain such marks. A
Design Challenge
Would you like to design
an area of the school?
The mound between the
Avon Block and the Sixth Form is to
be replaced by three trees* and we
want you to design the surrounding
area! The picture shows one design
by Liam Aldridge (Year 9), using the
computer program SketchUp, but you can
draw or even create a 3D model of your
own design. If you want to share your
ideas, why not come along to the Built
Environment Club one Thursday, where
we are not only re-designing the mound
but also helping to plan the new school
building. See Mr Heywood for more
information.
* The trees are being generously
donated by former student Will Jones
through Banyard Ltd, Arboriculture and
Landscaping.
special mention should also go to the
other members of their performance
group: George Robinson who also
achieved an A* and Stephanie Dearden
who was awarded full marks in the
performance section of the course.
