Music PREVIEWS Funmi Olawumi mac, Birmingham, Sat 8 June A Nigerian singer, and leader of the Yoruba Women Choir, Funmi Olawumi brilliantly mixes afrobeat, juju, highlife and fuji music - and all in the name of faaji. Faaji is a Yoruba word for ‘having a good time’, and Funmi certainly knows how to give her audiences just that, courtesy of a show that also features high-energy dance routines. Bo Bruce The Glee Club, Birmingham, Tues 25 June You’d be forgiven for thinking Bo Bruce was the winner of The Voice 2012, as in some ways she was. Despite finishing in second place, the speculation surrounding her relationship with mentor Danny O’Donoghue kept her in the spotlight. With a cover of Kate Bush classic Running Up That Hill receiving praise from the lady herself, it’s no surprise her album, Before I Sleep, made the top ten. Tegan And Sara The Institute, Birmingham, Wed 12 June Bringing together indie rock, New Wave, indie pop, indie folk and synthpop, Canadianborn identical twin sisters Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin started writing and playing songs together at the tender age of fifteen. Their first independent full-length album, 1999’s Under Feet Like Ours, caught the attention of Neil Young’s iconic manager Elliot Roberts, and it wasn’t long before the twins were making big waves on the international music scene. Their current tour comes in support of seventh studio album Heartthrob. Orange O2 Academy, Birmingham, Sat 22 June Pop punk band Orange were signed by Tim Armstrong of Rancid and have toured with numerous groups, including Reel Big Fish and Bowling For Soup. Their tracks have been used on TV shows The OC and The Hills, and their song Revolution is the theme tune to Cartoon Network’s hit show Generator Rex. In short, they’ve enjoyed no little success since coming together in 2004, since which time they’ve released three albums (and have just released the video to new song Elektron Gun). The band are currently asking fans to create the tour setlist, so vote quickly if you want to hear your favourite songs live! Primal Scream Kasbah, Coventry, Fri 28 June It was when Bobby Gillespie made the transition from drummer in the Jesus And Mary Chain to lead singer in Primal Scream that the latter group really took off, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of the mid- 1980s indie pop scene. They’re perhaps best known for 1991 album Screamadelica, with Country Girl, from 2006’s Riot City Blues, also enjoying a day in the sun, having been widely used on TV sports coverage. Making a comeback with tenth album More Light - described as ‘a rock’n’roll record, but modern rock- ’n’roll’ - they’re playing Coventry as a warmup for a summer of festivals, with Glastonbury and Benicassim among the stop-offs on their itinerary. Bilal Hare & Hounds, Birmingham, Sun 30 June Raised in Philadelphia, with a Christian mother and Muslim father, it was in church that Bilal developed an interest in music and singing. Defying his original ‘neo-soul’ tag, he constantly pushes the boundaries, with experimental album Airtight’s Revenge crossing jazz, hip-hop, electronic, rock and blues. He recently found some longed-for commercial success with latest album A Love Surreal, the ‘warm and sensual’ release debuting at number one on the iTunes R&B Chart. Bilal will be playing with his full band at the Hare & Hounds. The gig, his Birmingham debut, closes this year’s Bass Festival. MK1 The Sugarmill, Stoke-on-Trent, Mon 24 June Contestants on last year’s X Factor, Charlotte Rundle and Simeon Dixon were never short of an outspoken viewpoint, letting their feelings be known on a variety of subjects - from Christopher Maloney’s diva behaviour to judges Gary Barlow and Nicole Sherzinger’s whispering during their performance. Fusing traditional dubstep with mainstream production, they’ll be playing ten dates on the MK1 Alive tour, premiering new tracks from their forthcoming debut album and accompanied by a full live band. New City Kings also feature on the bill, with further support to be announced. The Chapman Family The Slade Rooms, Wolverhampton, Wed 5 June; Taylor Johns House, Coventry, Fri 7 June One of the best things ever to come out of Stockton-On-Tees, this five-piece were one of NME’s top tips for 2009, their music being praised for its ‘angsty, cliché-free brilliance’. They released debut album Burn This Town a couple of years later. On something of a crusade, the band has said: “We are determined to finally wake people out of their bland middle-of-the-road Cameron and Brit School-endorsed cultural coma…”. They’re playing eleven UK dates on their current tour, with new single This One’s For Love being released ahead of the free download release of Adult. www.whatsonlive.co.uk 17
