Dance Birmingham Royal Ballet: Giselle Birmingham Hippodrome, Wed 19 - Sat 22 June A groundbreaking work when it was first performed in the nineteenth century, Théophile Gautier's Giselle is a surreal ballet which tells the story of a girl who kills herself when she finds that her suitor, Loys, has kept from her his real identity - pretending to be a peasant when actually he's a member of the aristocracy. Loys, whose real name is Albrecht, and another suitor, Hilarion, who had jealously told Giselle of Albrecht's deception, visit Giselle's unconsecrated grave, where they find themselves in all manner of trouble due to the presence of the Wilis - ghosts of girls jilted by their lovers. It falls to the spirit of Giselle to try and save her suitors from beyond the grave... David Bintley and Galina Samsova’s stunning production, clad in gorgeous designs by Hayden Griffin, stays true to the classical spirit and steps of the original. Aakash Odedra: Rising Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry, Fri 14 - Sat 15 June A prodigy of esteemed choreographer Akram Khan, Aakash Odedra is recognised as one of the hottest rising stars of British dance. Having trained in the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak and Bharat Natyam, Odedra uses influences from both to create ‘a new flavour of contemporary dance’. Stopping off in Coventry following dates in Croatia and Germany, Odedra here presents his latest work, in which different processes and aesthetics create a new personal language. Solos choreographed by Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoul and Akram Khan all feature.
