Lucy McLaughlan:
Vessels In Vain
The Public, West Bromwich,
until Sun 29 September
Heavily influenced by her home city of
Birmingham and its connections with industrial
history, brutalist architecture and
untouched countryside, artist Lucy
McLaughlan’s work frequently features recurring
motifs painted with little or no preparation
and executed almost entirely in blackand-white.
Opposing the highly developed
techniques of contemporary graphics,
McLaughlan’s site-specific murals and improvised
paintings have been described as
‘organic and delicately intuitive’, and have
appeared on public buildings, riot shields, in
doorways, and even on a Rolls Royce.
Francois Morellet
Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, until Sun 14 July
Citing Pacific barkcloth as a formative influence
on the development of his distinct type
of abstraction, acclaimed French artist
Francois Morellet is well known for his ambitious
installations, as well as for his drawings,
paintings and sculptures. Described as having
‘a knowing playfulness that appeals both
conceptually and aesthetically’, this Ikon
exhibition features a selection of paintings
that complement Tapa: Barkcloth Paintings
From The Pacific, and includes a scaled-up
replica of a piece created by Morellet fifty
years ago.
