Awareness Camps,<br />
Blood/Eye Donation Drives<br />
at Vizag Vessels Project<br />
Vessels Project Site, Visakhapatnam<br />
organised a blood<br />
donation camp and HIV<br />
awareness camp on <strong>January</strong><br />
24, 2009 as part of its Safety<br />
Month Celebrations. Eye donation<br />
pledges were also made. The<br />
programme was organised in association<br />
with Indian Red Cross Society,<br />
Population Services International and<br />
Mohsin Eye Bank.<br />
The programme was inaugurated by Cmde. (Retd.) M.S.<br />
Randhawa – Vice President & Head (Vizag Works of L&T-<br />
HED). The inauguration programme was accompanied by Capt.<br />
(Retd.) S.K. Patnaik, JGM, L&T-HED, Mr. A.S. Prabhakar, Project<br />
Manager, LTCD and other staff members and Contractor in-charges.<br />
A total of 511 units of blood were donated and above 300 personnel<br />
pledged to donate their eyes and participated in the HIV awareness camp.<br />
Health Awareness Programmes at Charcharwadi Depot<br />
An Awareness Programme on HIV/AIDS/STD/Family Planning was<br />
conducted for the staff, students and workmen of CSTI Charcharwadi<br />
campus during February 25-27, 2009.<br />
Prior to the commencement of the<br />
programme, a poster exhibition<br />
was organised to facilitate<br />
understanding of the awareness<br />
campaign and enable meaningful<br />
participation.<br />
Documentary film on HIV/AIDS/<br />
STD/ Family Planning was screened<br />
during the three day programme.<br />
Around 350 people benefitted from the<br />
awareness drive.<br />
Vizag Vessels Project Aids CFI School<br />
As a part of its CSR initiatives, Vizag Vessels Project, constructed and<br />
donated basic amenities to children at CFI School, Sheela Nagar,<br />
Visakhapatnam. The CFI School is run by Child Foundation of India for<br />
Orphan Children.<br />
The amenities were inaugurated by Mr. N. Baskara Raju, Executive Vice<br />
President & Head – Infrastructure OC and Mr. M.S. Randhawa,<br />
Vice President, L&T HED and Mrs. S. Randhawa, President, PRAYAS<br />
– Prerna, Vizag on February 22, 2009.
Mrs. Poonam Patel, working under sub-contractor at L&T Facilities Site, Coimbatore, delivered twins (a male and a<br />
female) on September 29, 2008, at the labour colony. Sadly, despite<br />
proper medical attention, the male baby could not survive. However,<br />
doctors found that the female baby was infected and advised<br />
hospitalisation. Immediately, Mr. S. Ramamoorthi, Executive –<br />
Industrial Relations, made arrangements to admit<br />
the baby at G.K.N.M. Hospital in NICU (Newborn<br />
baby ICU). After proper medical treatment, the<br />
child was discharged on October 10, 2008.<br />
Upon the advice of the doctor, arrangement was<br />
made at the labour colony for a special light to give<br />
the child the required exposure to heat to prevent<br />
infection and gain weight. After a month, the child<br />
was weighed and found healthy.<br />

A health camp was organised for the workers of ICICI site<br />
and their family members on Republic Day – <strong>January</strong> 26,<br />
2009. The camp, organised in association with Family<br />
Planning Association of India, Hyderabad was inaugurated<br />
by Mr. A.K. Chugh, Regional Manager, Hyderabad Region.<br />

The strong team of doctors led by Dr. Ranga Reddy, M.S.,<br />
along with 25 volunteers from FPAI were present to conduct<br />
the camp enthusiastically. The doctors from FPAI gave<br />
lectures to spread awareness<br />

regarding AIDS, HIV<br />
and other diseases like<br />
TB, Malaria, Typhoid and the precautionary<br />
measures to be taken.<br />
FPAI team examined staff and their families<br />
comprising 266 men, 171 women and<br />
children.<br />
<strong>ECC</strong> Recreation Club, HQ, Chennai, in association with<br />
Lawrence and Mayo conducted a free eye-screening<br />
programme on February 4, 2009 for the benefit of the<br />
staff based at HQ.<br />
The highlights of the programme were: A comprehensive<br />
eye test by the leader in the industry with nearly 130 years<br />
in the field of eye care; Free trial of contact lenses; A 10%<br />
discount on placing the order at venue; Expert counselling<br />
on vision problems and invaluable eye care tips.

50 members from <strong>ECC</strong> Recreation Club, HQ, Chennai,<br />
took part in the Green Walk organised by Confederation of<br />
Indian Industry (CII) to commemorate World Environment<br />
Day on June 5, 2009 in Chennai. Aimed at promoting<br />
environmental awareness, the walk attracted more than 500<br />
people from various walks of life including corporates,<br />

professionals, students and NGOs.<br />
The walkathon was flagged off by<br />
the Chennai Mayor Mr. Subramanian<br />
from Gandhi Statue on<br />
Kamarajar Salai and culminated at<br />
Simpsons Ground, near the Presidency<br />
College. Later, participants<br />
took an oath to preserve the<br />
environment for the cause of<br />
future generations.<br />
Speaking at the green initiative and<br />
awareness drive, CII’s Tamil Nadu<br />
chairman C.K. Ranganathan urged government<br />
and non-governmental organisations, individuals and<br />
community groups, business and industry, religious<br />
organisations and the youth to learn from nature – its<br />
ceaseless service to humankind. Chennai Mayor<br />
Mr. Subramanian said the green initiative by the local body<br />
would help develop a sense of deep commitment among<br />
stakeholders in safeguarding the shrinking natural resources.<br />
Environment Day Celebrations at<br />
EWL Kancheepuram<br />
Commemorating World Environment Day on June 5, 2009,<br />
a green initiative was kick-started at Kancheepuram Complex.<br />
Mr. Babu Raj Singh, Regional Manager, Chennai Region, set<br />
the tone for the green initiative highlighting the objectives of<br />
the programme. 25 saplings were planted and further 75 are<br />
planned for plantation. A target of planting 1,000 saplings<br />
before the onset of monsoon is the main objective of this<br />
green drive.<br />

an initiative of the CII<br />
aimed at creating sustainable neighbourhoods and<br />
promoting awareness on environment, water conservation,<br />
controlling air pollution and waste management among<br />

E-LAWN initiative, while Mr. Sudeep Jain, IAS,<br />
Commissioner Rural Training, Tamil Nadu, was the<br />
Chief Guest at the event. Mr. M. Pandian, President and<br />
Mr. M. Kamaraj, Secretary – Manapakkam, Village<br />
Panchayat also joined the event and administered the oath<br />
on behalf the residents.<br />
Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, set the context of the programme<br />
by highlighting the need for green cover and its importance<br />
in ensuring a healthy environment for the society to flourish.<br />
He said that the E-LAWN initiative by CII is a unique<br />
effort and organisations need to support such ventures for<br />
creating a sustainable environment. He said that the<br />
programme met the triple objectives of creating awareness<br />
on L&T’s skills training centre, importance of green<br />
campaigns and necessity of planting saplings.<br />
Mr. T.T. Ashok, said that concept of E-LAWN is an<br />
ambitious plan of CII with the objective of creating<br />
sustainable neighbourhoods by focussing on conserving<br />
Energy, Land, Air, Water and Noise – the five vital elements<br />
for sustainability. He said that L&T as the largest corporate<br />
in Manapakkam is spearheading this social initiative and<br />
the thrust needs to be sustained through active participation<br />
from the panchayat and residents. He also commended<br />

L&T for its active CSR role in promoting the vocational<br />
training in different construction trades and creating<br />
employment opportunities for the economically backward<br />
rural youth across India.<br />
Mr. Sudeep Jain highlighted that initiatives such as skills<br />
training and tree planting need to diversify and intensify to<br />
a greater extent to ensure sustainability. While<br />
complimenting L&T and CII for their initiatives, he said<br />
joint efforts in setting up such model training facilities at<br />
different districts with the help of the government could<br />
go a long way in tapping the potential of the rural youth.<br />
He requested the administrative bodies at the panchayat<br />
level to play an effective role in waste recycling and disposal<br />
by creating grass root level awareness among people.<br />
Terming Manapakkam as ‘our own backyard’, Mr. Jain<br />
proposed the planting of 10,000 saplings on August 15<br />
and urged all the participants to be a part of the initiative.<br />

administered the Green oath and Mr. M. Kamaraj, Secretary,<br />
Manapakkam, Village Panchyat proposed the vote of thanks.<br />
The event was followed by the planting of 100 saplings in<br />
CSTI campus by the dignitaries and the public as well as<br />
students of the training centre.<br />
