This chapter presents and dicusses the experimentally obtained images and reflection intensity<br />
curves. The results are compared to the theory and the validity <strong>of</strong> the theoretical models is<br />
discussed.<br />
5.1 ATR Results<br />
The reflection data achieved from the experiments are measured as a function <strong>of</strong> the incoming<br />
angle at the air/prism interface. To compare these results with theory, a conversion factor is<br />
needed to convert the measured angle, θi, to the incoming angle at the prism/gold interface,<br />
θ. The geometry <strong>of</strong> the prism is sketched on Fig. 5.1.<br />
At the air/prism interface the light is transmitted through the interface at an angle <strong>of</strong> θt. This<br />
angle can be calculated <strong>by</strong> Snell’s law, thus<br />
