Location
• It is located on the north-western part of Zimbabwe.
Surface area
• Total surface area of 57,441 km² and a population of approximately 1.2 million (2002).
Province capital
• Chinhoyi with a population of 57,441(2005).
Language
• Shona and English.
Business hours
Businesses open at 0800hrs-1700hrs, from Monday to Friday. On a Saturday others open half
day from 0800hrs to 1300hrs.
The Province is divided into 7 districts, namely; Chegutu, Kadoma, Kariba, Makonde, Zvimba,
Hurungwe and Chinhoyi.
Chegutu district
• It is located within 90km(est) from Harare and it has a population of 191 909 (2005).
• There is a processing company that produces tinned vegetables and fruits (Chegutu
canners) and weaving (David whitehead textiles).
• There are farms that produce cereals (that include wheat, maize and beans), tobacco,
cotton, floriculture and horticulture produces.
• There are platinum and gold (Makwiro and Zimplats) mines.
Kadoma District
• It is located within 135km(est) from Harare and 134km(est) from Gweru and has a
population of 222,567 (2005).
• There are gold mines; Eiffel flats Mine, Empress Mine, Chakari, Pickstone Mine,
Umsweswe Venice Mine and Bromton Mine.
• There are farms that produce cereals (wheat, maize and beans), tobacco, cotton,
floriculture and horticulture produces.
Chinhoyi District
• It is located within 110km(est) from Harare and 248km(est) from Kariba.
• The district is the provincial capital with total population of 57,441 (2005).
• There are gold mines namely Golden Kopje, Sutton, Great Dyke, Caeser, Muriel and
Silverside.
• Tourist resort areas are Chinhoyi caves and Mazvikadei dam.
• There are fishing activities at Mazvikadei dam.

• There are grain silos in Banket and Lion’s Den.
Zvimba district
• It has a population of 230,703 (2005).
• There are brick molding companies that produce bricks for export and local market.
• There are many farms that produce horticulture and floriculture produces, cash crops e.g.
cotton and tobacco and general cereals (wheat, maize and beans).
Hurungwe District
• It is located within 330km(est) from Harare and 130km(est) from Chirundu and it has a
population of 246,902(2005).
• There are farms that produce cotton and animal husbandry.
• There is one stop border post that gave the area a lot of business and traffic both human
and vehicles from Zambia i.e. Chirundu Border Post.
Kariba District
• It is located within 355km(est) from Harare and has a population of 48,756(2005).
• Kariba dam and Mana pools and Zambezi escarpment are the tourist attraction in the
district.
• There are fishing activities at Lake Kariba and along the Zambezi River.
• There are fish processing companies in the district with Lake Harvest Pvt Ltd as the
market leader.
Makonde District
• It is located within 175km(est) from Harare. It has a population of 116,899(2005).
• There are farms that produce tobacco, maize and horticulture produces.

Tourist resort areas in the province
• In Mashonaland West, the major tourist attractions include, Lake Kariba and the
Chinhoyi Caves. Kariba Dam, which is 290 km long and 32 km at its widest point, does
not only provide Zimbabwe with hydroelectric power, but is also a source of countless
pleasures, including fishing, water skiing and sailing.
• National parks-Matusadona, Umfuli National Park, and Kaburi range.
Transport and communication net work
• Road transport network is mostly used in the Mashonaland province.
• There is communication efficiency through mobile phones, landlines and internet.
• There is Chirundu border post that gives passage into Zambia.
• There is a major airport in Kariba and small airports at Mt Hampden, Karoi, and
Mhangura.
Investments opportunities
• Freight and forwarding service providers that will set up business offices in Chinhoyi and
Kariba, to facilitate exporting business.
• Tourist attracting facilities: accommodation and sporting recreation facilities in Kariba
and Chinhoyi.

• Infrastructure development through construction of residential houses, industries,

• Gold Mining-the area has rich gold mineral deposit i.e The Great Dyke.
