Locati<strong>on</strong><br />

• It is located <strong>on</strong> the north-western part of Zimbabwe.<br />

Surface area<br />

• Total surface area of 57,441 km² and a populati<strong>on</strong> of approximately 1.2 milli<strong>on</strong> (2002).<br />

Province capital<br />

• Chinhoyi with a populati<strong>on</strong> of 57,441(2005).<br />

Language<br />

• Sh<strong>on</strong>a and English.<br />

Business hours<br />

Businesses open at 0800hrs-1700hrs, from M<strong>on</strong>day to Friday. On a Saturday others open half<br />

day from 0800hrs to 1300hrs.<br />

The Province is divided into 7 districts, namely; Chegutu, Kadoma, Kariba, Mak<strong>on</strong>de, Zvimba,<br />

Hurungwe and Chinhoyi.<br />

Chegutu district<br />

• It is located within 90km(est) from Harare and it has a populati<strong>on</strong> of 191 909 (2005).<br />

• There is a processing company that produces tinned vegetables and fruits (Chegutu<br />

canners) and weaving (David whitehead textiles).<br />

• There are farms that produce cereals (that include wheat, maize and beans), tobacco,<br />

cott<strong>on</strong>, floriculture and horticulture produces.<br />

• There are platinum and gold (Makwiro and Zimplats) mines.<br />

Kadoma District<br />

• It is located within 135km(est) from Harare and 134km(est) from Gweru and has a<br />

populati<strong>on</strong> of 222,567 (2005).<br />

• There are gold mines; Eiffel flats Mine, Empress Mine, Chakari, Pickst<strong>on</strong>e Mine,<br />

Umsweswe Venice Mine and Bromt<strong>on</strong> Mine.<br />

• There are farms that produce cereals (wheat, maize and beans), tobacco, cott<strong>on</strong>,<br />

floriculture and horticulture produces.<br />

Chinhoyi District<br />

• It is located within 110km(est) from Harare and 248km(est) from Kariba.<br />

• The district is the provincial capital with total populati<strong>on</strong> of 57,441 (2005).<br />

• There are gold mines namely Golden Kopje, Sutt<strong>on</strong>, Great Dyke, Caeser, Muriel and<br />

Silverside.<br />

• Tourist resort areas are Chinhoyi caves and Mazvikadei dam.<br />

• There are fishing activities at Mazvikadei dam.


• There are grain silos in Banket and Li<strong>on</strong>’s Den.<br />

Zvimba district<br />

• It has a populati<strong>on</strong> of 230,703 (2005).<br />

• There are brick molding companies that produce bricks for export and local market.<br />

• There are many farms that produce horticulture and floriculture produces, cash crops e.g.<br />

cott<strong>on</strong> and tobacco and general cereals (wheat, maize and beans).<br />

Hurungwe District<br />

• It is located within 330km(est) from Harare and 130km(est) from Chirundu and it has a<br />

populati<strong>on</strong> of 246,902(2005).<br />

• There are farms that produce cott<strong>on</strong> and animal husbandry.<br />

• There is <strong>on</strong>e stop border post that gave the area a lot of business and traffic both human<br />

and vehicles from Zambia i.e. Chirundu Border Post.<br />

Kariba District<br />

• It is located within 355km(est) from Harare and has a populati<strong>on</strong> of 48,756(2005).<br />

• Kariba dam and Mana pools and Zambezi escarpment are the tourist attracti<strong>on</strong> in the<br />

district.<br />

• There are fishing activities at Lake Kariba and al<strong>on</strong>g the Zambezi River.<br />

• There are fish processing companies in the district with Lake Harvest Pvt Ltd as the<br />

market leader.<br />

Mak<strong>on</strong>de District<br />

• It is located within 175km(est) from Harare. It has a populati<strong>on</strong> of 116,899(2005).<br />

• There are farms that produce tobacco, maize and horticulture produces.<br />

Tourist resort areas in the province<br />

• In Mash<strong>on</strong>aland <strong>West</strong>, the major tourist attracti<strong>on</strong>s include, Lake Kariba and the<br />

Chinhoyi Caves. Kariba Dam, which is 290 km l<strong>on</strong>g and 32 km at its widest point, does<br />

not <strong>on</strong>ly provide Zimbabwe with hydroelectric power, but is also a source of countless<br />

pleasures, including fishing, water skiing and sailing.<br />

• Nati<strong>on</strong>al parks-Matusad<strong>on</strong>a, Umfuli Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park, and Kaburi range.<br />

Transport and communicati<strong>on</strong> net work<br />

• Road transport network is mostly used in the Mash<strong>on</strong>aland province.<br />

• There is communicati<strong>on</strong> efficiency through mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es, landlines and internet.<br />

• There is Chirundu border post that gives passage into Zambia.<br />

• There is a major airport in Kariba and small airports at Mt Hampden, Karoi, and<br />

Mhangura.<br />

Investments opportunities<br />

• Freight and forwarding service providers that will set up business offices in Chinhoyi and<br />

Kariba, to facilitate exporting business.<br />

• Tourist attracting facilities: accommodati<strong>on</strong> and sporting recreati<strong>on</strong> facilities in Kariba<br />

and Chinhoyi.


• Infrastructure development through c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of residential houses, industries,<br />

transport network in the province.<br />

• Gold Mining-the area has rich gold mineral deposit i.e The Great Dyke.<br />

• Fishing at Lake Kariba. And fish processing factories.<br />

• Milling companies within the province especially in Chinhoyi and Karoi for cereals<br />

processing.<br />

• Food processing factories in Chinhoyi and Kariba for processing horticulture produce and<br />

fish for export.<br />
