FAQs for ESRI Presenters and Faculty Discussants
PRESENTATIONS
What is the format for each session?
Scholarly paper sessions (research findings, research design proposal, literature review, policy analysis, etc.) will be 45
minutes in length and will feature up to two student presentations per session. The Faculty Discussant will use 5 minutes
to introduce the session and presenters. Student presenters will speak in the order listed in the conference program and
will be given 10 minutes each to present. The discussants will then comment on the presentations based on the papers
submitted by the students (15 minutes total). The remaining time will be available for audience questions. The Faculty
Discussant will monitor time usage.
Symposia will also be 45 minutes in length. The symposia proposal specified how many students were to present in the
session; those names are reflected in the conference program. The Faculty Discussant will use 5 minutes to introduce the
session and presenters. For the next 20 minutes the presenters will follow a schedule they have organized to serve the
purpose of their proposal. There will then be 15 minutes of commentary from the discussant(s) based on the materials
submitted by students. Any remaining time will be available for audience questions. The Faculty Discussant will monitor
time usage.
The Faculty Discussant also serves as timekeeper for the presenters. Each presenter is limited to 10 minutes to make
his/her remarks. The Faculty Discussant may cut off a presenter if he/she goes over the time limit. Time placards will be
placed in the breakout room to notify students of the 2-minute and 1-minute mark.
What equipment is available for my presentation?
A LCD projector and screen will be provided for use during the presentation sessions. Please note that presenters will need to
bring his/her own laptop computer. Also, the LCD projector will only work with Mac computers by using the Mac-Projector adapter
cord. Placing both presentations on one computer will dramatically improve the flow of the conference session.
How should I prepare for my presentation?
If presenters choose to use PowerPoint for the presentation, make sure to format slides such that there is an appropriate
amount of information on each slide. Remember to use larger fonts so audience members in the back of the room may see
the presentation. As some rooms have windows, account for bright rooms and dim projectors. The use of high contrast
text and backgrounds can resolve this issue. Presenters may also want to prepare handouts for the audience to follow
along and take notes. Average audience sizes tend to be between 15–20 individuals.
Remember, ESRI is developmental in nature. If you have a question, please ask someone!
Help us keep the conference cost effective and
sustainable. Please recycle your nametag at the end of
the conference. Receptacles are located at the elevators
on the 3 rd floor and
4 th floor lobbies.
