If the father likes golf, the grand pa likes his morn-
ing walk and laughing group, if the son likes his cricket
and the daughter is busy with her dance classes, where
does that leave the home-makers, mother and grand
ma? In most families their mornings are usually occupied
with family chores, after which they want to be
left alone. A great excuse, no doubt, but mid-morning
gymming or home exercising should not be difficult.
Mothers with careers outside the home, obviously, find
it more difficult. Evenings could be family exercising together.
If all don’t get home in the evenings, after dinner
walks, even leisurely walks will be of great help for
health and happiness.
Food and fitness go hand in hand. It’s one of the
most sensitive subjects, as family members may have
differing needs and tastes. Additionally, food is consumed
so frequently during the day, that much thought
must be spent on it. One of the most important steps in
food production is menu planning. If every family could
spend some quality time together, contributing their
ideas, opinions, likes and dislikes and cooperating with
the group, meals could be made more interesting and
better accepted, without force.
According to the USA Bureau of Labour Statistics, The
average time spent on household chores like cooking is
2 hours per day. The ‘chore’ can be made a ‘fun time’ if
family members shared it as often as possible. This will
help the family to get closer and give more fulfillments
to each contributor.
“EvEry aspEct of thE mEal lEnds itsElf to rElationship
building”.
That’s why our traditional Indian kitchens used to be
spacious to include large preparations and dining space
too, even if it was on the floor and not on a table.
I remember our family participation for the summer
pickling of ‘avakkai’, a mango pickle that Andhras cannot
be kept away from! The older men took to cutting
300 to 500 mangoes. The ladies would get the entire
pre-preparations ready, children wiped each mango
piece and did other odd jobs. The final mixing was completed
by the head of the family, my father, ably guided
by my mother. A pickle to last the whole year for a family
of 20 members and unlimited guests and friends, and
don’t forget, fond memories pickled for a life time!
Success Stories
BrooKfieLds
I took long time to convince myself to join a fitness centre, but it has been one of the worthy decisions I made in the recent
past. My husband convinced me to choose FitnessOne over other local fitness centers and so I joined at FitnessOne
Brookefields.
During my first week I met the Physio who got me enrolled into “Trim Package”, with continuous help of their Dietician
(Poornima) and Trainer (Alok) and other staff members I now have lost 10.2 kg within 55 days of work day
I am happy that I chose FitnessOne than any other fitness centre as they played vital part in helping me reduce weight in a
healthy manner. Finally, I would also like to thank my family in supporting me on this journey.
6 | pROpEL fITNESS
Let me introduce myseLf as
Kanagarathinam @ mani age 62
yrs wife of dr. maLLiKa arjunan
height: 154.6 cms, weight: 101
Kgs.
For the past few years my husband and
myself noticed that I was putting on a
lot of weight and increased blood pressure
(luckily no diabetics) My husband
and one of his friend consulted by him
suggested to put me on anti hypertensive drugs.
But the blood pressure became erratic- suddenly low and sometimes
high (in spite of drugs) so irregular. My husband and another
doctor decided then “my obesity might be the cause of high
blood pressure and advised me to control diet and reduce weight
(but they did not say how to reduce).
But again reducing weight had become a nightmare for me only if
I lose 1Kg in a month it will shoot up to 2 kgs the next month. If I
put on strict -“no food in night”- idea, my body did not cooperate
and fainting attacks started to come.
Reducing weight and blood pressure had become a distant
dream for me but in my mind I had –
“Chinna chinna aasai siradikum aasai,
Chinna chinna pennai pola thuli vilayada aasai,
Gundu Gundu sathaikalai kuraithuvida aasai- idhu
Vanavilai pidthu katuvadhu pola aasai”
“Is it possible to reduce weight or is it a dream only”
We went for a morning walk one day and saw an advertisement
board about Pink. Without even telling me my husband went to
Success Stories
coimBatore
enquire about Pink and consulted Pink staff whether in this advanced
age will it be possible to reduce weight. My husband was
fully satisfied and enrolled me the next day itself in the Pink centre.
Considering my age of 62 yrs and high blood pressure
180/100mm hg I presume Dietician Uma Maheswari and Physiotherapist
Thenmozhi took it as a challenge and put me on a
good balanced diet (never caused fainting attacks) and physiotherapy
classes-my god!- Thenmozhi Physiotherapist moved my
legs this way and that way in practice sessions which I was not
able to do myself and all other exercises including cycling, treadmill,
rowing, strength which she took extra care (due to my age
and high blood pressure) and I’m thankful to them and Pink staff
as a whole.
My sincere thanks to all staff of Pink who affectionately called
me “grandma” and encouraged me to undertake exercises but
for them I would not have succeeded.
result:
reduced 11 kg in 5 months.
reduction of high blood pressure – my doctor says now i’m having
a controlled pressure and reduced the dosage of drugs.
FURTHER AIM:
To Reduce further 10 kgs (and with this I hope to have a normal
blood pressure too).
Me and my husband thank Pink and all their staff for their good
work- Our Thanks to Dietician Uma Maheswari and Physiotherapist
Thenmozhi in particular.
May God bless Pink Fitness Centre with more success like mine!
Success Stories
Pink has brought some colours back in my life. For past 5
years I was suffering from Severe Diabetes and I was having
two tablets everyday. I had treatment but still continued
the problems and I was advised to control my weight and
also my diet habits. Even though I was having the tablets
I could not control my sugar level. Doctors advised me to
reduce my weight which I could not do at home even after
walking for 1 hour in the morning and in the evening.
Then I joined in a local gym near by to my house where
I could not loose any of my extra pounds. Through a friend
and advertisement I came to know about Pink FitnessOne
and decided to join. Within the first week of my joining I got
the confidence that I can loose my weight and I can come
back to my normal weight and can control my sugar level
without the help of any tablets.
When I came here I was advised to take Trim package
because I had to make a lot of changes in my diet. I joined
in the Trim annual package. Deepthi is my nutritionist and
Kumutha is my trainer. They assess me everyday. As I have a
AlwARPet
history of Leg injuries, in the begin-
ning I was supposed to do only light
workouts given by Kumutha.She took
personal care and she was very considerate.
Deepthi put me under diet,
which was not a crash diet, but nutritive.
That helped me to reduce my
weight and to bring my sugar level to
normal. Now I am able to maintain a normal sugar level
with out any tablets. The ambiance in this center is very
good and the trainers are very warm and friendly. The staffs
are very efficient and the whole atmosphere made me feel
happy. I have lost 11 Kg in a span of 6 months and I got
relieved from the tablet eating routine. The trainer helped
me to do certain exercises to reduce the knee pain. The
nutritionist has given me daily menus and check with me
regularly whether I follow it or not, which I feel very caring.
I would definitely recommend this center to my friends
if they need one. I wish Pink and the staff all the success in
coming years too.
Success Stories
I’m glad to write about the way FitnessOne helped out in
my weight reduction from a century score of 100 to 92 kgs
in a span of 1 ½ month with 30 sessions Personal Training
(15 sessions completed right now).
Let me tell you my success story from being I-M-P-O-S-S-
I-B-L-E to becoming IM possible, I being a Doctor thought
that I have no time for gym or health club but at the same
time realized that its heights that I am obese and should
somehow get time out of my tight schedule, at last the day
arrived when I was told by my good friend Santhosh that
there is a gym called FitnessOne and I browsed net too to
know more about it, finally I was convinced and joined as a
TRIM member (3 months) at FitnessOne, Jaya Nagar.
I was introduced to Miss Sana Thousia my Dietician who
will be guiding me on my diet. This package proved lucky
to me as I was kept under her guidance and motivation,
though she was new to her job she was focused on my goal
of weight reduction and only on weight loss!, Sana planned
a diet chart which I preferred, but at the same time low in
calories, she even allowed to feast whenever I went to my
native once in a while, as I stayed away from home I had no
go of creating a small kitchen in my house so that I prepare
few things which she wanted me to prepare at home onlythis
proved my cooking skills too, apart from this she used
to check my home work (my diet diary), I used to write
what I ate the whole day and got corrected from her, one
day she even scolded me when my diet went off, but it was
10 | pROpEL fITNESS
Centre: Jayanagar
good that it happened.
How can I forget the day when
she advised me to take a personal
jaya nagar
trainer, that’s how I came across
R.Sathish my personal trainer,
I was seeing him from past few
days since I joined the gym, I
thought he is smart but never
thought how his skills would
help me, this was realistic when he really started of with
my exercise plan, he was funny-jolly and at the same time
serious of what I was doing, Sathish planned a workout
card for me which suited me, few things I experienced
with him is that he used to watch on my ability doing Iron
Man, Ab’s crunches, stair climbing etc., etc., I never used
to do Iron Man beyond 5-10 seconds (now I can hold myself
for 2 minutes), abs crunches not beyond 10 but now 50
repetitions. He used to chat with me when I am using stair
climber and I thought he would not notice if I miss a one or
two steps, but he catch holds of me and says if you do few
more steps its better for you or climb down lets proceed.
Now comes the climax of my story that I lost 7 ½ kgs in
1 ½ month of following a proper diet and exercise, the
sad part is that im leaving Bangalore for my masters and I
will miss them and everyone who are a part of Jayanagar
feng shui
geeta rajagopalan
Feng-Sui consultant
feng shui is a complex body of knowledge that reveals
how to balance the energies of any given space to assure
the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it. Feng
means wind and Shui means water. in Chinese culture
wind and water are associated with good health, thus
good feng shui came to mean good fortune, while bad
feng shui means bad luck, or misfortune. The notion of
the two elements comes from the idea that everything in
life should exist in a delicate balance and that this needs
to be respected.
not surprisingly therefore, Feng Shui and ‘decluttering’ go
hand in hand since ‘clutter’ disturbs the balance of any
space. There’s no faster way to block and stagnate energy
from circulating around your home than to have it filled
with clutter. if you’re ready to start making more money,
find a happy relationship, or even just experience a better
mood, then look no further than your own home. You’ll
be amazed at the change when you whole-heartedly start
getting rid of clutter.
although most of us look at cleaning and organizing as
a chore, it’s important to realize that our home and the way we live in it plays a huge role in our life. if we’re living in a dirty, cluttered
environment, we’re going to feel bogged down, out of control, and perhaps depressed. if, however, we’re living in a clean, well-organized
space, we’re going to feel uplifted, empowered, and confident. Our home represents who we are at our deepest level, and it’s important
we show ourselves and others that we’re moving through life in a positive, assertive direction.
Thus focusing on de-cluttering will purify and cleanse you house, office or mind of all the negative vibes and energies and will create a
fresh pathway for strong vibrant Chi (energy) to flow into your home and nourish your energy.
Apart from being a Feng-Sui consultant for over a decade, she is an interior designer and a Tarot Reader. She can be contacted on geetalakshmi@gmail.com
One tends to see injury as an
event of the moment like a fall, an impact
or a hit, a car accident etc., This is well at
times of course but all injury does not fit
the above stereotype. Recall, the trivial
nature of some injuries while performing
routine activities as in reaching forward,
bending down, just plain walking, getting
out of your car after a long ride, sneezing,
standing for a period of time etc. It is obvious
then that there was an injury waiting
to happen and the trivial activity was
the ‘ last straw on the camel’s back’ .
What happens in the gym may be more
than trivial but could add to the ‘straws on
the camel’s back’. Repetitive activity of a
faulty nature even if trivial can be cumulative
and may lead to a full blown injury
down the road. This is what is termed as
an overuse injury. Therefore awareness is
essential as many of us fit a level of vulnerability.
The following may be some examples of
individual types that may be on the upper
end of the list in lines of vulnerability.
1. Age over 30 years
2. A sedentary lifestyle involving minimal
physical exertion
3. Poor eating and hydration habits with
12 | pROpEL fITNESS
obesity
4. Lack of rest and poor sleeping habits
5. The born again exerciser that has never
exercised in the past but now since
his /her career and essential fundamentals
of life are out of the way feels
it is time to get in shape.
6. The ‘weekend warrior’, who spends
all week serving a hectic non physical
schedule, but over the weekend goes
all out physically
7. The once good looking individual who
has lost touch secondary to family
and career ties but is now ready and
determined to look debonair hunky
again
8. Or the otherwise young and fit enthusiast
who is pushing beyond the limits
of normalcy because it feels good for
the psyche (e.g. runners high, he-man
feel, peer pressure)
Every one understands that matter wears
and tears, secondary to function or friction.
We need to come to terms that we
are matter as well essentially made of element
and minerals. May be that is why we
decay and decompose after death as we
are being recycled back into nature. How
often do we take the effort to maintain
‘matter’ (car, windows, fridge, bicycle etc)
in our households by not exposing them to
certain forces or chemical toxins by polishing,
lubricating or cleaning them. If this
does not occur it is subject to wear and
tear. We need to understand that the human
body also fits this perspective. It can
be internal or external.
InteRnAl
Inappropriate exposure to toxins (what we
put in, junk food, sugars, alcohol excess,
smoking etc, lack of rest and sleep, stress,
inhaling environmental and occupational
toxins).
exteRnAl
Poor maintenance as in the polishing and
lubricating would be similar to inadequate
movement, flexibility and strength. With a
poor basic body infrastructure, if one begins
to over exercise they are most definitely
vulnerable.
So, our muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments
etc will fit this description. They are ‘matter’,
subject to wear and tear and if you fit
into the above overall stereotype, then you
are vulnerable to injury. The injury is cu-
mulative over a period of time secondary
to repetition, which can happen in the gym
and this is what shows up as aches and
pain. Being able to appropriately identify
them in a timely manner and seeking the
help of the appropriate health professional
is important as this may prevent chronic
pain and a full blown injury requiring surgery.
Better yet maintenance or prevention
of these injuries from occurring in the first
place would be the need of the hour to
maintain a more productive lifestyle.
Overuse injury may be occupational or recreational
as in sport or working out in the
gym. An overview of what could potentially
happen in the gym is the point of discussion
in this article. Regionally overuse injury
can happen in the spine (neck, upper
back, lower back), shoulder, elbow, wrist
(more vulnerable to occupational overuse),
hip, knee, ankle and foot. The modes
of force that can potentially cause overuse
injury are impact loading, tension, shearing
and vibration. Ultimately the single denominator
that causes cumulative injury is
fatigue because tissues start failing when
fatigue is prolonged. Hence a combination
of a vulnerable type as mentioned above,
faulty repetitive activity and fatigue are
the key reasons for overuse injury. One
can see how all three factors can occur in
seasonal foods
seasonaLity of food refers to the times
of year when a given type food is at its peak,
either in terms of harvest or its flavor. This
is usually the time when the item is the
cheapest and the freshest on the market.
The food’s peak time in terms of harvest
usually coincides with when its flavor is
at its best. There are some exceptions; an
example being sweet potatoes which are
best eaten quite a while after harvest. by
purchasing local foods in-season, you eliminate
the environmental damage caused
by transporting foods thousands of miles,
your money goes directly to the farmer, and
your family will be able to enjoy the health
benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits
and vegetables. buying seasonal produce
also provides an exciting opportunity to try
new foods and to experiment with seasonal
recipes. and it simply tastes better!
BENEFITS OF LOcAL, SEASONAL FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES
There are many benefits of eating foods that are naturally available in a given
season and location:
• In-season produce provides optimal nutritional value.
• Eating seasonally encourages a diverse diet.
• Buying in-season, local produce supports your local economy.
• Buying fruits and vegetables during their natural season is cheaper.
• Buying local produce reduces the pollution caused by shipping, packaging,
and storing fruits and vegetables.
Varying your diet to align with the season’s bounty will encourage you to try
foods that may be otherwise outside your comfort zone. Though fruits may not
be as enticing during the colder autumn and winter months as they are during
the sweltering summer, seasonal winter fruits contain an abundance of vitamin
C, iron, fiber, folate and other nutrients and still rival their summer siblings in
flavor. Similarly, vegetables harvested in winter abound with vitamins A and C,
fiber, potassium and more.
ating walks in the crisp fresh air; for warm and nourishing food and
stimulates your appetite, so your desire to eat more comes from your
body’s natural increase in energy use.
The cooler weather makes us crave comfort foods like tea, coffee,
spicy foods, alcohol, fried foods, chocolates, hot soups and stews.
The popular belief is that winter is the time when appetites are whetted,
the metabolism improves and hence, one can afford to take
slightly more calories. However, this is only true if you are living in
freezing conditions, as in the north of the country. But the fact is that
most part of India experiences mild and sunny winters.
Thus for most of us, our calorie requirements in winter are similar to
those in summer. There are other, more natural ways to stay warm
in winter. Certain foods generate heat and help cope with the falling
temperature. The heat produced in the body by these foods is called
diet-induced thermo-genesis. The energy released during digestion
and assimilation eventually helps increase body heat. Keep yourself
warm and drive away infections this winter with these heat-generating
foods: Traditional grains like Jowar, Bajra, Barley, Oats and Corn
have great warming properties.
At FitnessOne, we see people of all ages
come in and get the best they can from
working out. And we have heard many success
stories of how people have controlled
and conquered many monsters – the worst
of them being obesity.
Luckily for Gangadharan (72) and Bhagirathi
(64) their lives don’t revolve around
fighting the battle royale most of us seem
to be challenged by. Quite the reverse,
in fact. “I came to FitnessOne to put on
weight!” Bhagirathi’s eyes twinkle, literally.
Her serious abdominal operation left
her weak and tied to the bed, literally. “Besides,
I also had osteoporosis,” she says.
It took her body six whole months to get
somewhere near normal and one and a
half years later; she was walking around
the house doing things by herself.
Gangadharan, on the other hand was a
new retiree. As the MD of Futura Polymers,
cially during the last 15
years of his career. “It was
work and more work!” he remembers.
Finally, when he took his
bow from the company, he found odd
niggling little pains waiting for him at the
exit. “Throughout my work life, I had no
BP, no blood sugar, nothing.” But, once he
had time for himself, his body acted up.
“I found myself living with a body having
hardly any muscles, poor posture, lower
back pain etc. Also I have been suffering
from chronic sinusitis as long as I can remember.
The two of them came to FitnessOne only
because of Bhagirathi. “Although, mind
you, I would have never stepped into a
gym earlier. I always thought gyms were for
men who wanted to build muscles,” Bhagirathi
says. It was her doctor son who convinced
her about working out at a gym. He
explained to her that when a building gets
old, it needs props to support it, similarly,
when parts of the body become unable to
function normally, the other parts have to
become strong enough to support them.
Imagine her surprise when she found a lot
of ladies working out at the machines and
the lady trainers! At first the machines intimidated
her. But the careful supervision
by a lady trainer – Muthulakshmi helped
allay those fears. Today, the lady uses the
machines like she always knew how. “You
must remember I had all the problems any
single person could have. Three vertebrae
in my spine are fused. Lumbar 5 is Osteoporic.
I constantly suffered from cramps in
my legs and hands. I suffered from mal-absorption.”
All her problems have vanished,
and the lady has added a princely three
kilos to her weight. “I am a walking ad for
FitnessOne!”
It did not start w o n d e r f u l l y, though.
There always is trouble in paradise. Even
though you know it’s good for you, the
mind kicks in and brings up excuses.
“There were days when I would not want to
come,” she says, “and if I did I would complain.”
Gently, reassuringly, calmly, her
trainer would guide her through the paces,
never taking ‘no’ for an answer.
Now, they have become such keen exercisers
that they plan to carry their schedules
with them on their holiday. “We will continue
at the YMCA,” says Gangadharan. “I
don’t want to start sneezing again and let
my muscles shrink,” quips the gentleman
who took up personal training about 6
months ago and is seeing tremendous results
within the 60 days that he has found
his new guru – Mallikarjun and presently Ramesh
“No way,” his wife agrees. She, during those days of
not working out, was accustomed to getting Vitamin B
12 shots every few months or she would black out. “It
is six months since my last shot,” she says. “Now I am
more normal and can race with my granddaughter!”
Laughingly, the rather good looking couple is willing
to be brand ambassadors for FitnessOne. Because at
one time they were completely clueless about the benefits
of exercising till they got started and saw improvements
in themselves and their bodies every single
week. And all those improvements added up – making
them what they are today – completely and happy and
thoroughly enjoying every little nuance of life.
Gangadharan’s day starts at 6.15 AM when he takes
his 90 plus mother for her daily walk. He then goes
thorough every bit of the newspaper, gets all his facts
together before looking into personal and family matters.
A light lunch and snooze later, he is ready to hit
the gym. Late evenings see him spending time with
his mother watching the newest twists on TV soaps
and by 10 PM, he is ready to go to bed. Many people
are at a loose end post retirement. Their minds become
listless and their bodies are giving up. “Let them
come to us. We will talk to them and show them how
much exercising has improved our lives!”
Bhagirathi on the other hand teaches spoken English
to underprivileged children, goes for Sanskrit and Music
classes. Her mind is fit as her body is, and she is of
the opinion that we are here to live, not to cry. Friends
tell Bhagirathi not to go for walks with them. “We can’t
keep up with you!” they confess. To them she laughs
and says, “come, work out with me and you will be able
to run too!” But unfortunately, it is a mind set. We tend
to spend more on medicines and doctors than we do
on investing in a good gym membership, investing in
something that is fun, keeps the mind and the body
aligned and agile.
The human body was made to be active. It is just that
over time, the human brain invented an easier life
– one that was more convenient and fast. The need
for speed grew in ways that actually slowed down the
body. Physical movement reduced and the taste buds
evolved. Obesity – earlier laughed at became more
accepted. Today, the plus sizes have become so common,
that a lot of stores have special sections catering
to larger people. Luckily things are changing. Awareness
is building with a lot of support from the media
and humankind is moving – literally towards better
health. The numbers must improve further if we are to
go back to fitting into small and medium size clothing
and reducing those abominable health cost bills that
tend to cripple even if the disease doesn’t!
I
t is now almost two years since Vilasini and I joined Fitness
One. Having never been to a Gym before, it was a new experience
for both of us. As senior citizens we never imagined
that we can fit in with the younger generation and the new
age culture.
Looking back now, we feel it was one of the best decisions
we ever made. Our world has changed and we have started a new life. Today
our lifestyle has changed and the visit to the Gym domi
nates our daily schedule.
Fitness One has helped us achieve our
primary goals – to improve endurance,
strength and
flexibility. A lot of credit goes to
the guidance we received from our trainer
Syed Arab. He particularly helped us through the
initial stages when we were more cautious about injuries
and over exertion. Now that we have established our rhythm,
life is more comfortable and we are enjoying our workouts.
The atmosphere at Jayanagar FitnessOne is great and we now have a
whole circle of new friends. The encouragement and support has been
great and now we feel years younger. The feedback from the Physio and
Nutritionist has always been helpful. The Centre is well maintained and
efficiently conducted. Attractive renewal packages have been a great help.
We have recently renewed our Annual membership and we are looking
forward to more exciting years ahead.
I
started working out to overcome my poor sleeping habits
and to cope with my stress. To join a gym, I was thinking
thrice, but when I decided to join, my first choice was
Fitness One-Velachery. After Joining, I found that cardiotraining
helped me to build awareness and control my
state of mind, which was extremely helpful. Exercises that combine
intense concentration and physical activity like aerobics / abs
workout particularly shows great ways to deal with stress while
the pilates, yoga & stretches have become indispensable for somebody
like me who is working for a longer period in the field.
I thought it might be useful to engage a personal trainer for a
couple of months. The personal trainer put together
a program that would provide a variation
from the same series of exercises I had
been repeating for the past one year.
My experience with personal trainer
in the past lead me to believe that
the trainers were good at putting
together exercise programs and
providing a bit of extra encouragement
during these sessions,
but working with my trainer has
shown me that they can totally
change the way you think and not
just about exercise and fitness but
about your well being in its broader
sense. Fitness One is holistic & realistic,
it is not just some marketing or
vague new age concept of exercising.
They provide a systematic and effective
way of approaching your health and fitness
goals.
The results I started producing started motivating
me to take fitness as a permanent part of my weekly activities.
The benefits so far have been immediate (feel amazing
on the day of the workout) and long term (more energy and able to
deal with stress in day to day life).
During my training with Fitness One at Velachery, not only did I
achieve my physical goals, for the first time in many years, I developed
an emotional and psychological calm in my life.
I suffered from diabetics & pain in my neck, which I thought would
completely hinder my sessions. Instead of this, the dietician and
physio combined with my trainer -Vinod Srinivasan and the center
manager as a team, created a program that helped to alleviate
(what I thought were) my physical limitations. They always made
me to believe that what it takes is a little bit extra (which of course
I did) and the results were amazing now!
Seeing the results was one thing, but feeling the results is life
changing. My quality of life improved ten fold, and although it has
been a little while since we’ve trained together, the lessons that I
learned are with in me. Impressed by my results, I motivated my
wife (Ms.Nancy Jayakumar), who is a mother of three children, to
join Fitness One, The Fitness One Team designed a special fitness
program and diet plan.
Through this program her weight, BMI and body fat were regularly
monitored and the results were plotted in a graph. She bounced
back to her old weight. The training given to her was gentle and
focused on core strengthening of pelvic muscles and toning of abdomen
muscles. Now she is motivated to do exercise, which she
was lacking.
Since starting the work out at Fitness One, our health and fitness
has been at its all time high. My trainer is by far the most amazing
and intuitive personal trainer, I have ever worked with. Not only he
listened to me to identify my goals, he took a personal approach in
helping me achieve them. It was always fun to workout with him.
The training keeps us motivated and the training methods were
22 | pROpEL fITNESS
always varied, fun and challenging. This variety was particularly
very attractive as we never got bored with our sessions. The regular
monitoring of our progress was motivating and our improvements
were clearly measured. Now we started viewing our training sessions
not as a luxury but as an integral part of our quest for optimal
health and fitness.
hey say those who eat together
stay together. Well,
we would like to add that
those who workout together
stay together even better!
Working out together gives us that daily
dose of energy to keep us charged
and live a healthier and more active
lifestyle. My husband was always into
fitness, and I didn’t know what I was
really missing till we joined the gym
together! Truth be told, I could never
wake up and go to the gym all by myself!
My husband now always takes
the liberty to push me off the bed on
those lazy days! Instead of groaning
about aches and pains at breakfast
time, we now compete on whose fitness
level is better and how many
calories we have burnt!
We have been working out at FitnessOne
Jayanagar from the past two
years, and truly it has made a huge
impact on our lives. We have made
many friends, celebrated birthdays,
shared personal milestones, and
gone out for family picnics with the
people at the gym. The ambience at
FitnessOne Jayanagar is warm and
the trainers are good.
We have been married for
sense, as
we still feel
like we have
just recently got
married! How quick
those 3 decades have
passed by, it’s only when I look at
my 2 year old grandson do I realize!
So, for us, working out together has
proved to be the greatest gift that we
have given ourselves!
OBESITY
breaSt cancer
STRONG LINk BETwEEN OBESITY AND
BREAST cANcER.
There is a growing connection between breast cancer
and obesity especially abdominal and upper body obesity. Cancerous
breast tumors are notoriously hard to find in young women with
more than 15 -20% excess body fat.
ESTROGENS MAY BE cAUSATIVE FAcTOR
IN BREAST cANcER INcIDENcE
A possible explanation for the association between obesity
and breast cancer is that obese women store estrogens in their
extra fat cells which a causative factor for cancer breast. So it is important
for all women to have a control over their breast, especially
as they enter menopause (stoppage of menstrual cycles).
Cancer research in UK says that post menopausal women
who are overweight have higher levels of estrogen and testosterone
which may double the risk of breast cancer.
26 | pROpEL fITNESS
and
Scientists estimate that about 11000 to 18000 deaths
per year from breast cancer in US women over age 50 avoided
if women could maintain a BMI under 25 throughout their adult
lives.
The ovaries are the primary source of estrogen. However
estrogen is also produced in fat tissue, and after menopause when
the ovaries stop producing hormones; fat tissue becomes the most
important source of estrogen. Estrogen sensitive tissues are therefore
exposed to more estrogen stimulation in heavy women, leading
to a more rapid growth of estrogen responsive breast tumors.
The distribution of body fat may also affect breast cancer
risk, women with a large amount of abdominal fat have a greater
breast cancer risk than those whose fat is distributed over the hips,
buttocks and lower extremities.
The effect of weight loss and maintenance of lean body
mass on breast cancer risk has been studied with significant results.
The studies suggest that weight loss through calorie deficit
and/or exercise improves breast cancer risk. Obesity is therefore a
modifiable risk factor.
PUTTING ON wEIGHT OVER TIME cAN ALSO
INcREASE THE RISk OF BREAST cANcER –
STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT
• Putting on 2-10kgs of weight after the menopause increases
the risk of breast cancer by 30%.
• Putting on 25kgs of weight after the age of 18 increases the
risk of breast cancer by 45%.
Overweight and obese women didn’t respond as well
to treatment compared to normal weight women. Normal weight
women were 77% more likely to benefit from chemotherapy and
anti hormonal therapy.
DOES LOOSING wEIGHT LOwERS THE
RISk OF cANcER
One recent study that examined the effect of intentional
weight loss of 20 or more pounds and were not currently overweight
had cancer rates at level of healthy women who never over
weighed.
National cancer institute(NCI) has ongoing programmes
to move obesity related research in to practice. For example, NCI’s
division of cancer control and population sciences is supporting
the integration of diet and physical activity science into comprehensive
cancer control planning.
One study which appeared in the general cancer epidemiology
found that women who don’t regularly engage in physical
activity have more than twice the risk than active women in developing
breast cancer. The combination of inactivity and poor diet
packed on even more deadly punch resulting in almost 5 times the
risk.
A study done at university of Minnesota similarly showed
that periodic caloric restriction rather than a constant low calorie
diet may provide greater protection against breast cancer.
cONcLUSION:
“Physical exercise and weight reduction in postmenopausal
women decreases the risk of developing breast cancer, and
increases the response to treatment(in case if cancer occurs) ”.
“Regular exercise and maintenance of average body
weight in young and premenopausal women decreases the risk of
developing breast cancer on a later date”.
