Centre launch honours leaders in Interprofessional Education
On November 29, 2011, the Foundation
hosted a celebration of the dedication of
the George and Andrea Kalmar Centre for
Interprofessional Education. Held at TWH,
the event paid tribute to the ongoing
support of George and Andrea Kalmar in
the planning, renovation and completion
of the ground-breaking new Centre.
Interprofessional Education (IPE) is integral
to students and health care providers
seeking to improve patient-centred care,
quality of work-life and quality of care. A
leading strategy in transforming health
A world-spanning vision realized
A celebration on September 19, 2011 at the
Paul B. Helliwell Atrium marked a true leap
forward in global health care. Amongst the
top minds in Education at UHN, the Chang
and Temerty families were honoured for
their gift of $5 million towards establishing
the Temerty/Chang International Centre for
Telesimulation and Innovation in Medical
Education.
care practice, IPE enables UHN to better
meet the needs of patients and their
families.
A cornerstone of UHN’s IPE Program, the
new 2,000-square-foot Kalmar Centre is
bringing together experts in health care
education to investigate best practices in
IPE, and driving system-wide change to
make interprofessional care a reality.
At the dedication, Foundation President
and CEO Tennys Hanson welcomed the
Kalmars into Partners for Discovery – a
The Centre makes it possible for health care
specialists virtually anywhere on the planet
to access the best training opportunities
offered at UHN online. While slashing costs,
the program enhances health care capacity
in parts of the world that have limited
training resources, and gives medical
professionals the necessary skills to provide
safe and effective treatments for patients.
giving society which recognizes donors
who have made cumulative gifts and/or
pledges of $1 million or more. A storyboard
was also unveiled celebrating the
Kalmar family’s philanthropy, and is now
located in the Centre’s front lobby.
Celebrations continued with a presentation
of the Awards of Merit for Excellence in
Interprofessional Education (IPE). Established
in 2009 to recognize excellence in our IPE
community, the awards were presented by
Maria Tassone, Director of the Centre.
Already teaching laparoscopic surgery at
120 centres in countries including Rwanda,
Ghana, Colombia, Peru, Guyana, Jamaica and
the Ukraine, the Centre is branching out even
further. In particular, specialized training in
maternal and newborn health is desperately
needed in countries around the world. The
establishment of the Centre promises training
programs for this area and many others.
