Rheumatology doctors make pledge
in support of Campaign to Cure Arthritis
In a show of commitment to the cause, the
physicians in the Division of Rheumatology
at Toronto Western Hospital have collectively
pledged $250,000 toward the Campaign to
Cure Arthritis. The focus of their support is
to uncover the mysteries of diseases such
as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune
diseases such as lupus by studying their
origin and progression systematically.
Combined with the commitment of the
Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, the pledge
represents a united effort by doctors in the
Arthritis Program to support the Campaign.

Bringing a wealth
of expertise and
experience, Dr.
Sanchez-Guerrero’s appointment includes
both UHN and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Born and raised in Mexico, Dr. Sanchez-
Guerrero received his medical degree from
the University of Guadalajara, and trained in
internal medicine and rheumatology at the
Instituto Nacional de la Nutricion.
Dr. Sanchez-Guerrero is thrilled to be
working in Toronto, overseeing several
clinics, top-tier specialists, and an in-patient
unit caring for patients with complex
rheumatic diseases from across Ontario.
Recognizing the escalating need for effective
treatments, he is focused on improving our
understanding of rheumatic and related
disorders. With his main area of research being
connective tissue diseases, Dr. Sanchez-
Guerrero is targeting lupus in particular;
measuring its causes and breaking down
how to best diagnose and treat the disease.
He looks forward to advancing rheumatology
research and treatment.

in rheumatology – both in terms of patient
care and teaching,”says Dr. Sanchez-Guerrero.

wants to work together.”

Celebrating volunteer
fundraising leadership
In recognition of his valuable contributions
to fundraising for programs at Toronto
Western Hospital, a celebration was held
recently to formally thank Todd Halpern.
“Todd has been a part of the UHN family
for over eight years and during that time he
has been a great source of support for
Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto
General Hospital,” said UHN President and
CEO, Dr. Bob Bell.
In 2011, Todd took on fundraising roles for
two new campaigns at TWH, including
Co-Chair of the Brain Campaign in support
of the Krembil Neuroscience Centre and as a
Campaign Cabinet Member of the Campaign
to Cure Arthritis.
Todd joined the TG&WHF Board of Directors
in 2005 and since that time he has been
a great example of volunteer dedication
and inspiration. His volunteer fundraising
expertise can best be seen in the tremendous
success of Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival
which he founded. This event has raised over
$10.2 million to date. Over this period, Todd
and Ellen Halpern have contributed
extraordinary personal gifts to TG&WHF.
