PROCEEDS FROM THE bAy stReet hockey TOURNAMENT WILL HELP FIND THE ANSWERS TO HEART DISEASE
THE PETER MUNK CARDIAC CENTRE
2012 TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY:
WHAT IS CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE?
In congenital heart disease (CHD), a person is essentially born with a defect of the heart
caused by a development abnormality of one ore more structures of the heart or its blood vessels.
These can include narrowed or leaky heart valves, inefficient flow between the heart’s chambers,
abnormal connection of chambers/arteries, and other abnormalities. Major advances in surgical
and non-surgical techniques have allowed CHD patients to live longer than ever before.
For the first time, patients are living well into their 40s and 50s, raising families and having
their hearts repaired without major surgery.
ACHD PROGRAM TODAY
The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program located
at Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) celebrated its fifty year
anniversary in 2009. The ACHD program is the first program in
the world established specifically to look after adult survivors
of the pioneering surgery that saves the lives of children with
CHD, and it remains the largest such program in the world.
DR. ERWIN OECHSLIN, MD, FRcPc
Director, Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program, University Health
Network and Mt. Sinai Hospital; Associate Professor of Medicine,
University of Toronto; Bitove Foundation Professorship.
Directed by Dr. Erwin Oechslin, the Bitove
Foundation Professor in Adult Congenital
Heart Disease, the ACHD Program at the
PMCC is internationally recognized as the
premier centre for ACHD for its successes
in care, education and research.
The ACHD program has become renowned for its long term
outcome studies, interventions and patient centred care,
attention to the psychological aspects of adults with congenital
heart disease, as well as care of pregnant women with heart
disease in collaboration with Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
PMCC achieves global impact by training more physicians -
residents and fellows - in adult congenital heart disease than
any other centre in the world - over 50 cardiologists have been
trained through the program since 1992. Many of the program’s
trainees have moved on to begin similar programs throughout
Canada and the world. The ACHD program has served as a
model for the way to organize and provide care to adults
with CHD who require: lifelong surveillance, many further
investigations and interventions, are at lifelong risk, yet
nevertheless lead active happy lives, raising families and
contributing to society.
Recently, one of PMCC’s biggest successes in treating ACHD
patients is in percutaneous (through the skin) repair and
replacement of the heart valves. Previously, patients would
require open-heart surgery but now, minimally invasive,
catheter based techniques can be performed, allowing
patients to return home on the same or following day.
PMCC cardiologists perform about 250 catheter based,
minimally invasive procedures on CHD patients annually.

BUILDING THE FUTURE
FROM THE HEART
$100 MILLION CAMPAIGN
of the PMCC will realize the creation of Centres of Excellence in: valvular Heart
Disease, Aortic Disease, Molecular Medicine, Heart Rhythm Disease, Heart Function
and Multinational Clinical Trials. These Centres, along with the investment in
Fellowships and Innovation, will support the efforts to grow, differentiate and
2012 TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY:
2011 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
Bay Street firms once again came together to support the annual Bay Street Hockey Tournament,
helping to raise over $120,000 in support of Dr. Erwin Oechslin’s work in
Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital.
The 2011 tournament was presented by new lead sponsor Welded Tube of Canada.
Fifteen teams from the financial industry and one host
team from Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation
participated in two divisions. Division A was comprised of
6 teams while 10 teams made up Division B. After a
competitive preliminary round, the playoffs continued to
showcase the excellent level of play that the Bay Street Hockey
Tournament has become known for.
GMP Securities defeated Paradigm Capital by a score of 2-1
on Sunday May 1 to take the Division A Championship of the
2011 edition of the Bay Street Hockey Tournament. In the
highly competitive Division A, GMP Securities entered the
playoffs as the 3rd seed where they clipped Wellington
West Capital Markets by a score of 3-2 in the semi finals
before facing Paradigm Capital in the final. The last time
GMP won the Bay Street Tournament was 1999.
K2 & Associates took home the Division B Championship
with a hard fought 4-3 victory over TD Securities.
On route to the final, K2 & Associates defeated Haywood
Securities earlier in the day in the semi-finals. This was
the first year in the tournament for K2 & Associates but
many players including captain Blair Schultz had played
in previous years.
Mr. Butch Mandel (Executive vice President and Co-CEO of
Welded Tube of Canada) was on hand to present the
championship trophies along with Dr. Erwin Oechslin and
Linda Goldsack (Chair, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Campaign).
PROCEEDS FROM THE bAy stReet hockey TOURNAMENT WILL HELP FIND THE ANSWERS TO HEART DISEASE
2012 TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY:
IN CONvERSATION WITH…MR. jIM LEECH
Serving on the Board of Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation since 1996,
Mr. jim Leech is President and Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.
He has led large public companies operating and investing in the financial services, real estate
and energy industries, as well as start-up technology businesses.
theTICKER
asked jim to share his thoughts
on philanthropy, his involvement
with TGWHF and which team
is going to take home the
Stanley Cup this year…
What was your experience with “giving” growing up? What was your aha moment when it came to embracing
philanthropy as a way of living?
My first experience was with UNICEF boxes on Halloween!
I also remember community food drives organized by churches in My aha moment was the realization that I could make a
my neighbourhood. As a teen and young adult it was less about difference. It came shortly after I joined the Board of a struggling
giving money and more about volunteering.
theatre company in Toronto. Although I knew nothing about
theatre, I discovered I had some skills and knowledge that were
transferable and could have impact- it was then that I saw that
What influence did your parents play in your “giving”?
I could make a difference.
Both my parents and later the military, always encouraged
volunteering in the community – “community service”.
My first big commitment was coaching children’s sports
teams starting when I was twenty years old.
How do you choose where to give?
For the past 30 years I have always tried to support through
volunteer time four activities at the same time: Education;
Healthcare; Arts; and International NGO. My largest financial
commitment has been to the United Way of Greater Toronto.

How do you measure the impact of your dollars and volunteer time? You have been on the Board of TGWHF since 1996. How have
things changed and what keeps you engaged?
I find it really difficult to measure the impact of dollars.
All I know is that every organization I have been part of needs
money and spends and invests wisely – they make miracles
happen on small budgets. With regard to volunteer time, the
“return” is in knowing that you had some small part in making
something worthwhile happen.
What is the most gratifying gift you have made over the years
that stands out to you?
The most gratifying gift was the large
amount of time that I spent working with
a talented artistic team to save a theatre
company from bankruptcy and
establishing it as a vibrant, leading edge
and successful arts organization.
What is the importance of passing on the
legacy of giving to the next generation?
It is essential that each new generation
carry on the strong tradition of community
service that defined previous generations.
If not, we will stagnate as a society.
Supporting worthy causes is necessary as it is those causes
that define us as a society and a generation.
Canadian financial institutions have established a legacy
of giving. Why is it important for young people in business
to embrace the tradition?
Let’s be honest - those of us in this industry are doing very well
financially. But we live in a pretty insulated and, in too many
cases, unidimensional world. It is important for each of us to
expand our interests and learn about others who are less fortunate
– there is a lot more to life and our communities than spreadsheets!
What drew you to Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation?
I was attracted to the research mandate of TGWHF – can you
imagine the emotional return from being a part of the discovery
of insulin or the cure for cancer?
“Supporting worthy
causes is necessary
as it is those causes
that define us as
a society and
a generation”.
The numbers are much larger, but the need is even greater.
The medical research staff are involved now in delivering what
seemed like science fiction a couple of decades ago – it is amazing!
The promise of the leading edge research conducted at the
hospital keeps me engaged – the benefits to our community
and medical science are tangible.
As Chair of the Foundation’s Investment Committee
you are responsible for the prudent investment of
donated funds. What makes investment
strategy and philosophy different in
the non-profit sector?
Did you play hockey as a child? Do you still play?
I played hockey in community leagues and intramural at University.
I coached community leagues in Germany and in Toronto for
10 years. Now I just skate with my grandkids – sometimes with
a hockey stick but always proudly sporting our Leafs jerseys!
Who will win the Stanley Cup this year?
There should be no difference. Unfortunately,
however, the foundation is not large enough
to hire its own staff and so must rely on third
party investment advisors.
Unfortunately investment outsourcing is very
expensive, but the foundation really has no
choice. As Board members, we are fiduciaries,
responsible to steward other people’s donated
funds in the best way possible to further the
research initiatives of the hospital – this is
a very significant responsibility.
What are your sports of choice for participation?
I enjoy skiing (cross country and downhill), snow shoeing, scuba
diving, hiking, cycling and golfing.
Boston – they are big bruisers, know how to score and,
unfortunately, seem to get away with a lot of unsportsmanlike play.
BMO Capital Markets
What has made you successful at BMO Capital Markets?
2012 TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY:
PLAYER PROFILE
How long have you been with BMO Capital Markets? What advice do you have for young guys just getting started
in the industry?
Seven and a half years.
Actively manage your career from the very start. Make sure you
What is the most exciting/interesting part of your job?
understand to the extent possible what you’re getting into (nature
of the firm, your specific role, expected career track, etc.) and be
prepared to make the commitment required or find a different
Helping senior executive teams and Boards of Directors deal
with important strategic and financial issues – contested
mergers/acquisitions are particularly interesting.
firm/role/area of focus. You’re going to work hard so you might as
well enjoy what you’re doing.
I try to do the right thing for both our clients and our firm (believe
it or not, this is actually possible in our business). Transaction
skills and experience, good judgment and a strong work ethic
are all requirements for success in M&A at BMO CM or any other
Bay Street firm. Our shop was once described to me as a
partnership within a bank, which I think is a fair description,
and I have enjoyed this culture better than some less collegial
ones that I saw earlier in my career.
How important is teamwork in your role?
What types of people are you looking for on your team?
Critically important as we do all our client/deal work as part of
small teams. Smart, competitive, hard-working, personable
teammates with a high level of integrity.
A lot of former competitive hockey players seem to find their way
into the finance industry. Why do you think that is? What aspects
of hockey translate well to the business you are in?
A lot of key skills transalate well from hockey to investment
banking. For instance: competitiveness, intensity, work ethic
and team skills.

How long have you been involved with the Bay Street Hockey
Tournament?
This will be my sixth year.
Why is it important for BMO
Capital Markets to participate
each year?
It is an excellent charitable cause
to support. And it’s a very well run
tournament, which is both competitive
and a lot of fun for all participants.
You spent some time as a cabinet member for the SickKids Leaders
program. What other philanthropic interests do you have?
University of Toronto Schools (just joined the Board),
United Way and numerous other local charities.
PHOTO: Andre Hidi (back row, far left) pictured with
the 2011 BMO Capital Markets team
Your hockey career includes some significant stops: a top flight OHL
organization in Peterborough, representing Canada at the World junior
Hockey Championships, a CIAU Championship with the University of
Toronto and of course your experience with the Washington Capitals
and Binghamton Whalers. What is your greatest hockey memory?
Winning the CIAU championship with the U of T varsity Blues in
1984. We beat Concordia 9-1 in the final, coached by Mike Keenan
(who actually smiled that day!). That team will be brothers forever.
Who is the best player you ever played with?
Paul Coffey or Scott Stevens – if you could have combined them,
I think you would have had the greatest defenceman of all time.
Who was the biggest influence on your hockey career?
Keenan. Coached me in Peterborough as well (we lost the Memorial
Cup final to Cornwall in overtime that year). He helped me sign with
Washington and eventually get into business school as well.
You have two NHL goals to your credit. Do you have the puck
from your first?
Yes, though since Mike Gartner blasted a slapshot off my leg
and in, he told me to frame my sock instead. My second goal
(vs. vancouver) was somewhat better.
Who is your pick to win the Stanley Cup this year?
Tough call but I’ll go with Boston.
