What has made you successful at BMO Capital Markets?
2012 TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY:
PLAYER PROFILE
How long have you been with BMO Capital Markets? What advice do you have for young guys just getting started
in the industry?
Seven and a half years.
Actively manage your career from the very start. Make sure you
What is the most exciting/interesting part of your job?
understand to the extent possible what you’re getting into (nature
of the firm, your specific role, expected career track, etc.) and be
prepared to make the commitment required or find a different
Helping senior executive teams and Boards of Directors deal
with important strategic and financial issues – contested
mergers/acquisitions are particularly interesting.
firm/role/area of focus. You’re going to work hard so you might as
well enjoy what you’re doing.
I try to do the right thing for both our clients and our firm (believe
it or not, this is actually possible in our business). Transaction
skills and experience, good judgment and a strong work ethic
are all requirements for success in M&A at BMO CM or any other
Bay Street firm. Our shop was once described to me as a
partnership within a bank, which I think is a fair description,
and I have enjoyed this culture better than some less collegial
ones that I saw earlier in my career.
How important is teamwork in your role?
What types of people are you looking for on your team?
Critically important as we do all our client/deal work as part of
small teams. Smart, competitive, hard-working, personable
teammates with a high level of integrity.
A lot of former competitive hockey players seem to find their way
into the finance industry. Why do you think that is? What aspects
of hockey translate well to the business you are in?
A lot of key skills transalate well from hockey to investment
banking. For instance: competitiveness, intensity, work ethic
and team skills.
