lip termed ? A.—Palpi (or feelers).<br />
Q.—Name the other parts of the mouth not mentioned<br />
above ? A.—Tongue, chin, and a second pair of appendages<br />
attached to the lower lip.<br />
Q.—On what figures are shown the mouth parts of insects<br />
which masticate their food ? A.—Figs. Nos. 89 and 103.<br />
NOTE,—The pupils should be required to give the common name of each part,<br />
as in {fig. 103) labrum, upper lip; mandibles, upper jaws ; maxillae, lower jaws;<br />
labium., under lip; mentum, chin. In referring to the palpi, or feelers, appendages<br />
of the lower jaws and lower lip, the terminating pi is plural, and pus singular,<br />
as maxillary palpus (sing.); labial palpi (plural).<br />
Q.—Name the figures which represent the upper jaw of an<br />
insect which masticates its food ; also, those which represent<br />
the lower jaw, upper lip, and lower lip ? A.—Upper jaw,<br />
Nos. 89, 103, 107, 108, 109 and 110. Lower jaw, Nos. 89, 103,<br />
111 and 113. Upper lip, Nos. 89, 103, 104 and 105. Lower<br />
lip, Nos. 89, 103 and 106.<br />
Q.—Name the figures that represent the feelers (palpi) and<br />
other appendages of the lower jaws and lower lip ? A.—Nos.<br />
89, 103, 106 and 111.<br />
NOTE.—The above question may be divided as thought best by the teacher.<br />
Q.—Of what forms are the mouth parts of insects, which<br />
obtain their nourishment by suction ? A.—In some insects the<br />
mouth parts are formed as an elongated beak, or proboscis,<br />
and are fitted for piercing the substance on which they feed ;<br />
in Butterflies and Moths it is usually as long as the body, and<br />
coiled beneath the head, when not in use.<br />
Q.—What class of sucking insects have their mouth parts<br />
fitted for piercing ? A.—Bugs, Horse-flies, etc.<br />
Q.—Name an insect with mouth fitted for lapping ?<br />
A.—House-fly.<br />
