Diptera.<br />

Question.—Into how many sections are the insects of this<br />

Order divided, and name them? Answer.—Two ; Long-horned<br />

Flies and Short-horned Flies.<br />

Q.—What are the prominent antennal characters by which<br />

the Long-horned Flies can be distinguished? A.—They are<br />

composed of four or more joints.<br />

Q.—What are the prominent antennal characters by which<br />

the Short-horned Flies can be distinguished? A.—The antennae<br />

are short and are two or three jointed.<br />

Long-horned Flies.<br />

Q,—Into how many Families are the Long-horned Flies divided,<br />

and name them? A.—Four ; Mosquitoes, Gall Gnats,<br />

Crane Flies and Fleas.<br />

Short-horned Flies.<br />

Q.—Into how many Families are the Short-horned Flies divided,<br />

and name them ? A.—Four ; Horse Flies, Syrphus<br />

Flies, Bot Flies and House Flies.<br />

NOTE.—The Robber Flies (Asilidce), the Forest Flies and Sheep Ticks (Hippoboscidce),<br />

belong to Diptera.<br />
