This exhibition at Millard and Lancaster is thanks to 

previous successes working with the gallery co-owner 

Gareth Lancaster Williams who is also the curator at Weston 

Park. I won the Regional Artist Award for Staffordshire and 

Shropshire in the Halls Fine Art Open Competition at the 

Granary Gallery at Weston, and took part in a joint exhibition 

celebrating 25 years of the Weston Park Foundation last 

year. 

For that exhibition I painted live at the 2011 V Festival and 

also inside the House at Weston. This enabled me to capture 

the atmosphere and excitement of a live music event as 

well as the splendour and history of a stately home, a total 

contrast of subject but each as fascinating to paint. These 

Weston house interior works led to introductions to the 

residents of two separate John Nash houses in Atcham, 

both of which offered opportunity to capture on canvas his 

bold architectural statements. These pieces form part of 

this exhibition along with examples of the Weston Park and 

V Festival work. 

The varied architecture, different levels and the relationship 

of the town to the River Severn have made Shrewsbury one 

of my favourite towns. It also retains a magic quality for me 

as being a gateway to Wales, as a result of family car trips 

and my university days studying Fine Art at Aberystwyth, 

where the 3½ hour train journey from Stoke-on-Trent was 

often broken by a stop or change in Shrewsbury.

The Old Market Hall, Shrewsbury

I enjoy setting up in the heart of a town 

where I am due to stage an exhibition 

and so the Old Market Hall in Shrewsbury 

seemed like an ideal location and 

subject matter for this upcoming show 

at Millard and Lancaster. I was able 

to give out postcards advertising the 

show to interested passers by.

Shrewsbury Railway Station

I wanted to capture the drama of 

looking up at the impressive façade of 

Shrewsbury Railway Station and castle 

and also relate it to the movement of 

the taxis and short term parking in 

front of station and the queuing traffic 

underneath the dark railway bridges 

on the left. The winter light meant I 

was often getting shafts of the low sun 

spotlighting the station façade and 

giving the stonework a golden quality. 

A passer-by informs me that this station 

is unusual because the Victorians 

extended the building downward by 

adding an additional story underneath.

Cronkhill

This John Nash designed property at 

Atcham seems striking to me because 

of the setting and in particular the 

view of The Wrekin as much as the 

property’s distinctive Mediterranean 

appearance. I have attempted to 

combine the property and its view in a 

single composition. I enjoy the winding 

road leading up to the gate and the low 

winters sun bouncing off the lawn.

The Staircase at Longner Hall

This spectacular staircase designed by 

famous architect John Nash (Brighton 

Pavilion, Marble Arch) presented an 

ideal subject matter for my love of 

wide-angle multi-level representation 

with many routes for your eye to travel 

down. The brightly painted walls, 

stained glass and mixture of natural 

and artificial light sources create some 

interesting unusual colour work. 

Staircase Hall: corridor has 5 plaster 

fan vaults with pendants, and fireplace 

with quatrefoil surround and shields; 

staircase off rising to landing in one 

flight and returning in 2 with wreathed 

wrought iron balustrade and apsidal 

end with ribs rising to Gothic frieze; 

staircase window contains glass by 

David Evans depicting 3 figures, one 

of them Edward Burton who died at 

Longner in 1558 and whose memorial 

is set in the grounds.

This room in The House at Weston Park is 

quite a dark space. I wanted to contrast 

this with the harsh light flooding in from 

the exterior. The bright summery colours of 

the formal gardens are visible though the 

window.

The height is what first strikes you 

when you first walk into this room, I 

have tried to translate that with the use 

of wide-angle perspectives, keeping 

the crystal chandelier central to the

The Conservatory at Weston Park

The unusual architecture of this 1930s 

conservatory, a combination of wood 

and cast iron, filled with exotic plants, 

attracted me instantly. Unusual patterns 

of light cast through the glazing slowly 

move across the space. 

The Church visible across the lake, 

adjoined to The House at Weston 

Park, is St. Andrew’s Parish Church of 

Weston-under-Lizard

V Festival 2011 - Outside the Arena

This oil painting was started on the 

Friday of last years V festival as the 

weekend campers arrived and trudged 

past the stalls to the campsites. The 

shear amount of people kicked up a 

dust in the sunny dry conditions. 

Recognisable figures were formed 

from multiple passers by. The guy 

in front of me gave out thousands of 

free contraceptives, there was an 

abundance of fake tan and bright 

wellies, some purchased from ‘Welly 

Bob’s’, the large stall on the right.

The Breakfast Painting

I worked on this piece throughout most 

mornings on the 2009 Provence trip. 

The great weather allowed the set up 

to be left up outside over night and 

it was just a case of picking a brush 

up in the mornings whilst the others 

were getting breakfast. The dappled 

sunlight moving through the trees kept 

the colours moving across the entire 

scene. I have tried to exaggerate a 

tunnel into the middle with directional 

brushstrokes.

This painting depicts the small harbour and boat huts at Cabasson with the 

first of the day’s sun inside the bay lighting up the right-hand side. I have 

tried to highlight the difference between shade and sunlight with obviously 

different brush strokes. Painting light on water encourages abstraction, as 

it is of course impossible to accurately depict over a period of time. The fun 

downward waves of bright colours on the right pay homage to the influence 

of the abstracted water paintings of Egon Schiele and David Hockney.

I was left almost completely undisturbed on this spectacular 

coastline. I was interested in how the energy of the incoming 

water dissipated as it navigated the rocks, from right to left. The 

rocky coastal work of Claude Monet was an influence here.

The benefit of this location was that 

I was able to paint extremely similar 

sunlight on water conditions over 5 or 6 

days, staying a short distance from the 

coast. I wanted to use this opportunity 

to build up a water study of intense 

coloured brush strokes neighbouring 

one another, following the work of 

Monet and the Impressionists, I wanted 

to explore sea/water painting for many 

years and this trip was ideal.

painted boat huts are reflected in sunlit 

water. The painting equipment was 

stored overnight underneath the white 

upturned boat in this painting which 

saved carrying the equipment each 

day.

A quick study of a fellow-painter on 

the trip, spot lit by the sun against 

the crumbling plaster and tiles of the 

old boat huts of Cabasson. We were 

reading about the Bloomsbury Group of 

painters in London who would regularly 

paint one another working. This 

could well have been a subconscious 

influence on the subject.

losing paintbrushes to the sea. We were 

reading about the Bloomsbury Group of 

painters in London who would regularly 

paint one another working. I am 

pleased with the feeling of movement 

and character in this study. There is 

a hint of Honoré Daumier’s caricature 

influence in this, whose work I adore.

Late Afternoon 

The sun baked landscape of Cabasson’s 

boat huts and bays in the warmer glow 

of the late afternoon / early evening. The 

sea appeared almost a licorice black up 

here against the bleached white dried 

seaweed coated coast. I was playing 

with repetition of brushstroke pattern 

within the water.

This in an unusual subject but the 

multilevel space, changing light and 

movement of traffic appealed to me. I 

was positioned half way up a dog-leg 

staircase leading up to the elevated 

Longton Railway Station lit by flickering 

yellow light. 

I started this piece 2 years previously 

when I was painting around Stokeon-Trent 

with another en plein air 

painter - Roger Taylor. We can see 

Roger painting on the top level. I enjoy 

including the motif of an on-location 

painter whenever possible. I came 

back to finish this painting in winter 

2011/12.

The more constant sunlight of Provence allowed me to experiment 

with this painting, which is about one hours painting at the 

same time over 3 days. The long shadows and extreme sunlight 

spilling out of the painting is a much more light sensitive subject 

compared to the works I produce in the unpredictable weather 

and diary of self employment back in Britain. This piece sums up 

the advantages of dedicated painting trips abroad.

A desire to paint large scale oils on 

location can require driving a van round 

London, which gives a completely new 

perspective to the capital, and unlocks 

views I had never experienced whilst 

studying there and relying on public 

transport. I couldn’t resist returning to 

paint this car’s eye view of the iconic 

tower bridge after clocking it on-route 

to painting Columbia Road flower 

market on a Sunday.

This was the first of my paintings to be 

exhibited in a National Competition. It 

was a ‘Winsor and Newton Newcomer’ 

at the Royal Society of Oil Painters’ 

Exhibition (ROI) at the Mall Galleries, 

London in 2010. Apart from the market, 

I was interested in the upper level of 

movement with the train line above the 

road and then the towering St Guys’ 

hospital looming behind that.

Sherlock Holmes’ famous haunt, the 

street today is a high traffic bustle. I was 

interested in the sun streaming into the 

tall-sided street, how to best represent 

the spears of light that span out from 

the sun against the dark shade of the 

buildings. Van Gogh’s sun paintings 

and use of directional brushwork to 

sum up emanating light is an influence 

here and has been in terms of a subject 

and technique for several years. The 

blur of the iconic double-decker red 

bus driving past is effective for the 

subject matter.
