This painting depicts <strong>the</strong> small harbour <strong>and</strong> boat huts at Cabasson with <strong>the</strong><br />

first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day’s sun inside <strong>the</strong> bay lighting up <strong>the</strong> right-h<strong>and</strong> side. I have<br />

tried to highlight <strong>the</strong> difference between shade <strong>and</strong> sunlight with obviously<br />

different brush strokes. Painting light on water encourages abstraction, as<br />

it is <strong>of</strong> course impossible to accurately depict over a period <strong>of</strong> time. The fun<br />

downward waves <strong>of</strong> bright colours on <strong>the</strong> right pay homage to <strong>the</strong> influence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> abstracted water <strong>paintings</strong> <strong>of</strong> Egon Schiele <strong>and</strong> David Hockney.
