note:
At about the time the artist created
this drawing, the father of the sitter,
Felix E. Schelling, a professor of
Shakespearean Literature at the
University of Pennsylvania,
purchased the house across the
road from the Garbers at Cuttalossa.
The dwelling, formerly owned by
Mary Maxwell, was owned by the
Schellings until 1945 when it was
purchased by the Salter family. Felix
Derbyshire Schelling, the subject of
this drawing, was, among other
things, an artist, and would later
teach art at the Penn Charter School
for Boys in Philadelphia. For another
