Welcome to this year’s <strong>Croydon</strong><br />
<strong>Secondary</strong> Schools <strong>Awards</strong>.<br />
This is an exciting time for all in education<br />
with many changes to how schools,<br />
especially secondary schools, are managed<br />
and run; these changes only highlight<br />
the importance of evenings such as this<br />
when we have a chance to come together<br />
and celebrate success in its many forms.<br />
Whatever model of governance a school<br />
has, be it an academy, community school,<br />
faith school or trust, what is shown is a<br />
commitment to excellence.<br />
Throughout the year, as the <strong>Council</strong>’s<br />
Cabinet Member for Children, Families and<br />
Learning, I visit schools across <strong>Croydon</strong><br />
to see and hear for myself the varied<br />
experiences and aspirations of pupils,<br />
teachers and heads.<br />
Academically, pupils in <strong>Croydon</strong> have never<br />
done better: 87% of all young people now<br />
leave school with 5 good GCSEs, 60%<br />
with subjects including English and Maths,<br />
which are the solid foundations both for<br />
further education and the wider world of<br />
employment or training.<br />
Whilst academic achievement is important,<br />
tonight is also about achievement in the<br />
arts, music, sport, and local engagement:<br />
areas which build an individual’s confidence<br />
and experience at the same time as<br />
encouraging wider community cohesion.<br />
So congratulations to all this evening’s<br />
award winners and I look forward to hearing<br />
your stories.<br />

I am delighted to welcome you all to the<br />
annual <strong>Croydon</strong> Schools’ <strong>Awards</strong> <strong>Ceremony</strong>. I<br />
want all the young people in <strong>Croydon</strong> to be the<br />
‘best they can be’, to have high aspirations,<br />
strong ambitions and to achieve excellent<br />
outcomes, so that their life-chances are as<br />
good as they can be. This evening we celebrate<br />
the successes of young people who have<br />
done particularly well: it is right that these<br />
successes should receive public recognition. All<br />
those receiving awards tonight have achieved<br />
outstanding success, whether in the classroom,<br />
on the sports field, in the laboratory, through<br />
their artistic or musical talents, or in their<br />
personal growth and their contribution to<br />
school and community life. Congratulations<br />
and well done to all the young people involved.<br />
The evening is also a tribute to those who<br />
have provided the support to that success.<br />
Parents and carers, teachers and others<br />
provide support in various important ways. So<br />
this evening is about the partnerships that lie<br />
behind the success stories: it is good to know<br />
that so many parents/carers and teachers are<br />
here.<br />
