ZSOLT LÁSLÓ BECSEY – HUNGARIAN MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT (HUNGARY)<br />
MEP Zsolt Becsey has been working for twenty years now in <strong>European</strong> Affairs.<br />
He graduated in Budapest in Economics and International Relations, and entered<br />
the Hungarian diplomatic service. Later, as deputy head of Hungary’s<br />
Representation to the EU, he actively participated in his country’s EU<br />
enlargement negotiations. Committed to what he calls the “real integration” of<br />
the new Member States, MEP Zsolt Becsey has been active mainly in the<br />
<strong>European</strong> Parliaments ECON Committee (Economic and Monetary Affairs),<br />
specializing on taxation because of its direct, visible impact on economic, social<br />
and regional development. It was this social and politic interest that brought<br />
MEP Becsey to consider microcredit, with the aim of adapting it to <strong>European</strong><br />
reality.<br />
GUISEPPE GUZZETTI – PRESIDENT OF FOUNDATION CARIPLO AND ITALIAN SAVINGS BANK<br />
ASSOCIATION (ITALY)<br />
A law graduate at the Catholic University of Milan, Mr Guzzetti entered local<br />
government in 1970, as regional counsellor for the Lombardy region. After<br />
serving as President of the same region, he entered the Italian Senate in 1987.<br />
Later on, he collaborated as board member and chairman to several institutions<br />
such as the association of Italian Foundations and Savings Banks, the Bocconi<br />
University, the Fondation de credit agricole – Pays de France and Fondazione per<br />
il Sud. Today, he is a member of the “Technical-Scientific Committee for the<br />
Economics of Culture” of the Italian Ministry of Culture and of the Piazza<br />
“Finanziaria Italiana” Committee.<br />
LETIZIA MORATTI – MAYOR OF THE CITY OF MILAN (ITALY)<br />
Mrs Moratti was born in Milan and was able, in her career, to combine<br />
institutional tasks to the leadership of important industrial groups. Counted<br />
among the most well-known <strong>European</strong> entrepreneurs, she developed activities<br />
in the different fields of finance, insurance, communications, new media and risk<br />
management. Specifically in the sectors of insurance brokerage and new<br />
economy she founded and directed major international companies. She<br />
successively served as president of RAI, a state owned television company and<br />
News Corp Europe. In 2003, she became Minister of Education, University and Scientific Research.<br />
She is engaged in various humanitarian and social assistance activities and is Ambassador for the<br />
UNDCP (UN Office on Drugs and Crimes). She became the new Mayor of Milan in June 2006.<br />
KLAAS MOLENAAR – PRESIDENT - EMN (FRANCE)<br />
Mr. Molenaar has more than 30 years of field experience in SME programmes and<br />
<strong>org</strong>anisations worldwide. He founded and manages IntEnt Foundation, where he<br />
developed a programme to link Migration, Development and Entrepreneurship. He<br />
is the founder and Director of Triodos Facet (1990), a SME consultancy, training<br />
and implementation agency as well as of SEON Foundation, specialized in starting<br />
SMEs in the Netherlands. He is an Associate Professor on <strong>microfinance</strong> and small<br />
enterprise development at the University of Applied Science INHOLLAND, member<br />
of the Dutch National Advisory Council for MicroFinance and President of the board<br />
of EMN.
SPEAKERS<br />
FOUAD ABDELMOUMNI – DIRECTOR - AL AMANA (MOROCCO)<br />
Fouad Abdelmoumni is Moroccan. He is the founder and current CEO of the<br />
Association Al Amana (www.alamana.<strong>org</strong>). Al Amana currently serves half a<br />
million microcredit beneficiaries, with a portfolio of € 210 million, through a<br />
network of 430 branches and 2,100 employees. Over the years, he has assumed<br />
responsibilities in various international bodies related to <strong>microfinance</strong>. He is also<br />
very active in <strong>org</strong>anizations working for the promotion of citizenship. He has<br />
experienced detention for crimes of opinion (3 years in the late 70s) and enforced<br />
disappearance (2 years during the 80s). A graduate of the University Mohammed V in Rabat in<br />
economics, he participated in the management course of ISCAE (Institut Supérieur de Commerce et<br />
d'Administration des Entreprises) in Casablanca (1995-1997). He has published several contributions<br />
as an economical and political analyst and as a <strong>microfinance</strong> expert.<br />
RICCARDO AGUGLIA – MICROCREDIT MANAGER - FAIR FINANCE (UK)<br />
After his degree in banking, Mr Aguglia worked as a business consultant<br />
supporting Small and Medium Enterprises in South Italy to identify and<br />
access appropriate external finance. From 1998 to 2004 he managed the<br />
project “Honour Loans”, a microcredit scheme targeted at self-employed<br />
people, on behalf of The Italian Development Agency. Since 2004 he has<br />
been working for Fair Finance, where he manages the Microcredit Programme. Fair Finance is a<br />
local, independent, ethical and socially responsible lender offering financial services to excluded<br />
communities in London. There, he has researched social and financial exclusion across Eastern and<br />
Western Europe and studied the US <strong>microfinance</strong> sector meeting, which allowed him to implement<br />
innovative techniques and methodologies in Fair Finance lending processes. He has also developed<br />
relationships with <strong>European</strong> Microfinance Network to improve lending processes and set up internal<br />
methodologies in young Microfinance Institutions across Europe.<br />
CHRISTIAN BARON – PROGRAMME MANAGER - GRET (FRANCE)<br />
Christian Baron, is an Economist from the University Paris I and the Conservatoire<br />
National des Arts et Métiers. He has been working on development of rural and<br />
urban SME's in developing countries for more than 20 years. He first worked as an<br />
expatriate adviser on the implementation of a village savings and credit bank<br />
network in Mali. Thereafter, he joined the International Centre of Research and<br />
Development (CIDR), where he was in charge of the "Financial Decentralized<br />
Systems" department. He came to the Gret in 2003 as Program Manager in the "Microfinance and<br />
SME's" department. There, besides the promotion of <strong>microfinance</strong> activities in Africa and Asia, he has<br />
developed several programmes aiming to facilitate SME access to support, advice and training<br />
services. He is also a Director and Member of the Audit Committee of Amret, a leading Cambodian<br />
MFI since 2005.<br />
FABRIZIO BOTTI – RESEARCHER FELLOW - SAPIENZA UNIVERSITY OF ROME (ITALY)<br />
Fabrizio Botti is a Temporary Research Fellow at “Sapienza" University of Rome<br />
and was awarded a Ph.D. in History and Theory of Economic Development by<br />
LUISS University of Rome. His main areas of research involve gender<br />
perspectives on <strong>microfinance</strong> and the role of donors on MFIs capacity to<br />
manage the double bottom line, social and financial mission, with a particular<br />
focus on Italy, the Balkans, and West Africa.
ADRIAN CHINDRIS – DIRECTOR - CAPA (ROMANIA)<br />
Mr Chindris has been working since 1996 with CAPA and served between 2000<br />
and 2004 as Executive Director of CAPA Foundation, a <strong>microfinance</strong> institution<br />
from the World Vision Network. During his time in office, he managed the<br />
transfer of operations into CAPA Finance – a joint stock company owned by<br />
World Vision International and MEDA. He was responsible for the<br />
commercialisation of CAPA, increasing its assets up to 18 times and finally managed the exit of World<br />
Vision International and MEDA, as main shareholders in transaction with Romanian American<br />
Enterprise Fund. Under his management CAPA Finance has grown to become one of the most<br />
significant non bank <strong>microfinance</strong> institution of Romania, now planning to become a <strong>microfinance</strong><br />
bank. Overall, Mr Chindris has a solid 13-years experience in <strong>microfinance</strong>, especially in Romania and<br />
Caucasus (Azerbaijan).<br />
DANIELE CIRAVEGNA – PRESIDENT - RITMI (ITALY)<br />
After a Masters in Economics and Management at the Università degli Studi di<br />
Torino, Mr Ciravegna served as a professor of economics at the same university<br />
while working as an Officer for finance, budget, planning and labour policies for<br />
the municipal government of Rivoli near the city of Turin. He then became a<br />
Board member of several financial institutions, such as Fondazione CRT,<br />
FinPiemonte S.p.A. Today, he is the chairman of the Don Operti Foundation as well as of the Board<br />
of Directors and Scientific Committee of the <strong>European</strong> School of Management of Italy. Finally, he is<br />
the president of the Italian Microfinance Network RITMI.<br />
MARCELLA CORSI – PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS - SAPIENZA UNIVERSITY OF ROME (ITALY)<br />
Marcella Corsi is Professor of Economics at "Sapienza" University of Rome<br />
(Faculty of Statistics) and member of the Scientific Committee of Fondazione<br />
Risorsa Donna. Her main research topics are human development and social<br />
inclusion (in a gender perspective) and labour economics. She was awarded a<br />
Ph.D. in Economics by University of Manchester (UK) and a degree in<br />
Statistics/Economics by "Sapienza" University of Rome.<br />
EMMANUEL DELUTZEL – HEAD OF GROUP MICROFINANCE - BNP PARIBAS (FRANCE)<br />
Mr. de Lutzel is an Economist from the Institut d´Etudes Politiques in Paris. Since<br />
January 2007, he is in charge of the international <strong>microfinance</strong> activities of the BNP<br />
Paribas Group. He has 25 years of experience in banking (BNP Paribas,<br />
Commerzbank) and industry (Siemens) in France, Germany, Belgium and Taiwan. He<br />
worked for 3 years as Global Relationship Manager for the International Trade<br />
Department of BNP and has also been in charge of Marketing and Communication of<br />
the International Trade Department of BNP Paribas. Moreover, he has been the<br />
Initiator in 2005 of a network of volunteers within BNP Paribas (JACADIE = J’Accompagne les<br />
Créateurs de l’Adie), to provide advice and support to Adie funded micro entrepreneurs.<br />
SIMONE DI CASTRI – POLICY ANALYST - CGAP AND WORLD BANK (USA)<br />
Simone di Castri is a PhD student in law and economics and assistant professor in Financial Market<br />
Regulation and Banking Law at the University of Bologna. His research topics include financial<br />
gatekeepers, comparative corporate governance, social finance and <strong>microfinance</strong> regulation. He is a<br />
member of the interdisciplinary research group on <strong>microfinance</strong> at the University of Bologna and<br />
micro.Bo, an Italian IMF associated with EMN. In 2004 he worked for the banking department of the<br />
international law firm Allen&Overy and in 2006 he was admitted to the Italian Bar Association.
MARIA DOICU – DIRECTOR - EUROM CONSULTING (ROMANIA)<br />
Maria Doiciu has 16 years of management and consulting experience in the area of<br />
business development and <strong>microfinance</strong>. She works with <strong>org</strong>anizations to<br />
implement projects aimed to create an enabling environment for business<br />
development in Romania, Eastern <strong>European</strong> and Central Asia countries. Maria<br />
leads research for business development programmes, training initiatives and<br />
performance assessment for small and medium business and <strong>microfinance</strong> institutions. For the last 5<br />
years Ms. Doiciu held management positions in the Business Development Support Services and<br />
SMEs Access to finance projects funded by EU and Romanian Government and as industrial partner<br />
for Global Finance a regional equity investment fund. Since 2007, Maria is the vice-president of the<br />
<strong>European</strong> Microfinance Network. Ms. Doiciu holds a Master in engineering degree from the<br />
Polytechnic University of Bucharest and a Master of Business Administration from the Durham<br />
University, United Kingdom.<br />
CRISTINA DUMITRESCU – EUROPEAN FUND FOR SOUTHEAST EUROPE (UK)<br />
Cristina Dumitrescu has been gathering a wide experience of the Romanian Financial sector for the<br />
last 10 years. She developed customer management skills working both with the providers of the<br />
financial services and the end users. After obtaining her MBA degree from Manchester Business<br />
School, she started to work for the <strong>European</strong> Fund for Southeast Europe, the largest <strong>microfinance</strong><br />
investment fund worldwide. In this new position, she managed to double the Romanian Fund<br />
portfolio, in the same time <strong>org</strong>anizing the opening of the business in Bulgaria.<br />
ANGEL FONT – INCLUSION DIRECTOR - OBRA SOCIAL CAIXA CATALUNYA (SPAIN)<br />
Angel Font Vidal has a BA in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona and a<br />
MBA from EADA Business School. Angel Font started his professional career in<br />
environmental engineering, and soon joined Intermón Oxfam where he spent 8<br />
years performing co-ordination functions for projects in Latin America and worked<br />
in communication and fundraising. He also served as Deputy General Director.<br />
Since 2000, he is the Inclusion Director of Fundació Caixa Catalunya, from where<br />
he promotes labour insertion projects for underprivileged groups as well as the<br />
development of <strong>microfinance</strong> in Spain, Latin America and Africa. He is member of the Co-operation<br />
Council for the Development of the Regional Government of Catalonia as well as Vice-president of<br />
the Board of the <strong>European</strong> Microfinance Network. He also teaches in several business schools<br />
focusing on subjects related to the management of non-profit <strong>org</strong>anisations.<br />
ANA GOROSTEGUI – PARTNER - TRANSFORMANDO SOCIAL PARTNER (SPAIN)<br />
Ana Gorostegui has a Law degree of the Alcalá de Henares University and a diploma in Business<br />
Management from the CEU Luis Vives of Madrid. Working partner of Transformando since 2004 she<br />
works as a trainer and advisor in business creation for small and micro enterprises. She is also a<br />
micro-credit program coordinator and she is responsible for the process of monitoring the results and<br />
distribution of work load. Finally she is in charge of Human Resources.<br />
PHILIPPE GUICHANDUT – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - EMN (FRANCE)<br />
Philippe Guichandut was appointed EMN Director at the end of February 2004 to<br />
consolidate and develop the network services. A MBA graduate with a third degree<br />
diploma in Urban Social Development, he has 16 years of international experience in<br />
various French NGOs in the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of a<br />
wide range of development programmes. He started and developed a <strong>microfinance</strong><br />
project and monitored <strong>microfinance</strong> projects in South East Asia. He gives lectures in Business<br />
Schools and universities and served as treasury officer for two networks of French NGOs.
MALCOLM HAYDAY – DIRECTOR - CHARITY BANK (UK)<br />
Malcolm Hayday, FRSA, is the Chief Executive of the Charity Bank Limited, the UK’s<br />
first general charity to be authorised as a bank. He was previously the Director of<br />
Community Finance at CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) and Director of CAF’s social<br />
investment loan fund, Investors in Society. Mr Hayday has more than 30 years<br />
experience in business finance. He graduated from Exeter University in 1972 with a<br />
BA Hons. in Economics. He then progressively assumed senior positions with City<br />
financial institutions. From 1987 he concentrated on finance for small and medium sized businesses.<br />
He joined CAF in 1993 to establish the loans service for charities. He has written a number of papers<br />
on social economy and social investment.<br />
MARTIN JUNG – CO-DIRECTOR - EVERS & JUNG (GERMANY)<br />
Mr. Jung is a senior expert in SME finance and entrepreneurship. He has 15 years of<br />
research and consulting experience for a wide range of clients (commercial and<br />
development banks, guarantee associations, national and regional authorities, ILO,<br />
EC). His special focus is on the development of new financial support schemes for<br />
SMEs and innovative IT-based business support tools. In 2001 he co-founded<br />
EVERS&JUNG. He is a founder and board member of the German association of startup<br />
initiatives (VDG) and was member of 2 expert groups of the <strong>European</strong> Commission<br />
on <strong>microfinance</strong>.<br />
ALEXANDER KRITIKOS – GERMAN INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMIC RESEARCH (GERMANY)<br />
Alexander Kritikos is Associate Professor of Economics at the <strong>European</strong> University<br />
Viadrina at Frankfurt/Oder in Gemany and managing director of the "Labor Market<br />
Activation Institute" in Germany since 2004. In 2001 Alexander Kritikos was the first<br />
to develop a pilot project on <strong>microfinance</strong> in Germany. Besides he is Consultant for<br />
the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and for the Labour Market Agency and led<br />
several projects for the Institute of Labour Market Research. He published several<br />
articles on the analysis of microlending approaches and on entrepreneurship<br />
research in various refereed journals and newspapers. He is also a founder and Board member of the<br />
German Microfinance Institute (DMI - Deutsches Mikrofinanz Institut).<br />
DIEDERICK LAMAN TRIP – CHAIRMAN - COUNCIL OF MICROFINANCE (THE NETHERLANDS)<br />
Diederik Laman Trip (1946) spent most of his career at ING, where he was<br />
successively Chairman of the Postbank, RVS and finally Chairman of the ING<br />
Netherlands Board. After retiring in 2005, he became active in social activities,<br />
as Chairman of the Dutch Advisory Committee on Microcredits in the<br />
Netherlands, the Board of ANWB, Dutch OpenAirMuseum, Burgers Zoo<br />
Arnhem and other Cultural <strong>org</strong>anisations. He also coaches executives.<br />
ANDREA LIMONE – CEO - PERMICRO (ITALY)<br />
Mr Limone studied Economics in Turin and attended the “First Master in<br />
Microfinance” in Milan, <strong>org</strong>anized by the Giordano Dell'Amore Foundation.<br />
He became PerMicro's CEO after previous experiences in the Italian<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong> sector. Formerly in charge of <strong>European</strong> projects for Banca<br />
Popolare Etica and branch director for Mag2 Finance, an ethical financial<br />
cooperative, he also worked as researcher for the Giordano Dell'Amore<br />
Foundation, contributing to the publication "Microfinanza in Europa". He also edited publications<br />
about microcredit and banking system: "Banche e Microfinanza" and "Otto modi di dire microcredito".
BRIGITTE MAAS - COORDINATOR - DMI (GERMANY)<br />
Brigitte Maas is a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsches Mikrofinanz Institut e.V. (German<br />
Association for the Development of Microlending) and Project Manager at GLS Gemeinschaftsbank eG<br />
(German Ethical-Ecological Cooperative Bank / EQUAL DP EXZEPT "Start-up Financing"). Deutsches<br />
Mikrofinanz Institut e.V. ties together <strong>org</strong>anizations from several sectors (f.e. banking, public and<br />
private business support - in particular for self-employment starters, science) for the improvement of<br />
small start-up and growth capital in Germany. Building up existing projects and in cooperation with<br />
business support centres, the DMI started to offer small loans on a bigger scale from autumn 2005.<br />
FABIO MALANCHINI – DIRECTOR - MICROFINANZA (ITALY)<br />
After having graduated with a Masters Degree in Science from the Bocconi University<br />
in Milan, Mr. Malanchini worked for several years in the Department of Economics at<br />
Bocconi University and as a consultant in the field of <strong>microfinance</strong>. He went on to cofound<br />
both Microfinanza, a consulting firm specialized in <strong>microfinance</strong> and finance<br />
for development, and MicroFinanza Rating, a rating agency specialized in<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong>, jointly with other specialists in the field. A former Executive Director of<br />
MicroFinanza Rating, Mr. Malanchini is currently the Executive Director of<br />
Microfinanza. He has a long experience as a consultant and as a rater in the<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong> sector in NIS/CEE countries, Latin America, Africa, MENA countries, Asia and Western<br />
Europe.<br />
FEDERICO MANZONI – PRESIDENT - GIORDANO DELL’AMORE FOUNDATION (ITALY)<br />
Chairman of Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore and member of Fondazione Cariplo’s<br />
Steering Board, Mr Manzoni graduated in Philosophy at the Catholic University of<br />
Milan and in Economics at the University of Bergamo. After teaching philosophy and<br />
history in secondary schools, he served as manager in several companies, particularly<br />
in the publishing sector. At present he is member of the Supervisory Board of UBI<br />
Banca and contract professor at the University of Bergamo in the course “Banks and<br />
Local Development”.<br />
PIERRE MATHEUS – CREDIT DEVELOPMENT DIRECTION - ADIE (FRANCE)<br />
Mr Matheus graduated from a Masters in local economic development in 1997. He spent seven years<br />
collaborating with institutions supporting business creation in Bordeaux and the Ardèche region. He<br />
joined Adie in 2004, first as credit manager for the city of Lyon and later on as director of the<br />
regional agency in 2007-2008. He is now in charge of the micro-insurance programme of Adie within<br />
its Head Office for Credit Development.<br />
MARIA NOWAK – PRESIDENT - ADIE (FRANCE)<br />
After graduating from the Paris Institute for Political Studies and the London School of<br />
Economics, Mrs. Nowak pursued a career within the French Agency for<br />
Development. On secondment to the World Bank in 1991, she took part in the<br />
development of microlending programmes in Central Europe while at the same time<br />
initiating a similar programme in France: she created Adie (Association pour le Droit à<br />
l'Initiative Economique). From 2000-2002, she was Special Adviser to Laurent Fabius,<br />
Minister of Economy. She is Officier de l’Ordre du Mérite (1994) and de la Légion<br />
d’Honneur (2008) and received various awards in recognition of her involvement in<br />
the promotion of microcredit in Europe. In 2007 she was elected “<strong>European</strong> of the<br />
Year” by Reader’s Digest.
VITTORIO NOZZA – DIRECTOR - CARITAS ITALY (ITALY)<br />
Mr Nozza was ordained priest in 1973 and after several years as assistant parish<br />
priest in Italy, he started working with the Caritas Italy <strong>org</strong>anization in 1986,<br />
successively being in charge of several dioceses, and various areas of activity:<br />
strategic growth of Diocesan Caritas, education and training. He became the Director<br />
of Caritas Italy in March 2001 and his mandate was renewed in 2006.<br />
MICOL PISTELLI – DIRECTOR OF THE SOCIAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS PROGRAMME - MIX (USA)<br />
Micol Pistelli is the Manager of the Social Performance Standards Program at<br />
Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) in Washington DC. Mrs Pistelli earned her<br />
B.A. in Political Science from the University of Bologna in Italy and her M.A. in<br />
International Economics and International Development from SAIS-Johns Hopkins<br />
University in Washington DC. She then started working on international development<br />
in 2003 for the Department of Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry of<br />
Foreign Affairs. She has worked as a <strong>microfinance</strong> consultant at the Italian Embassy<br />
in Egypt, at Fundacion Paraguaya in Paraguay and at the Microfinance Management<br />
Institute (MFMI) in Washington DC. Her work at MIX consists of collecting, analyzing and<br />
disseminating the social performance data reported by the <strong>microfinance</strong> institutions (MFIs) on a<br />
number of core social performance indicators.<br />
GIAMPIETRO PIZZO – PRESIDENT - MICROFINANZA (ITALY)<br />
Mr. Giampietro Pizzo is a founding member of Microfinanza srl and has been<br />
serving as its President since 2007. An economist and <strong>microfinance</strong> expert, he<br />
gained considerable expertise in an international environment over the past<br />
twenty years, working with cooperative <strong>org</strong>anizations, credit unions, rural finance<br />
and <strong>microfinance</strong> <strong>org</strong>anizations. He has promoted and carried out microcredit<br />
programs and consultancy assignments in Italy and Europe. Between 1987 until<br />
2003 he worked for numerous Development Cooperation Programs in Africa and<br />
Latin America. Between 2003 and 2008 he was the Coordinator of the Technical Unit for<br />
Internationalization at Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Pizzo is a founding member of RITMI, The<br />
Italian Microfinance Network.<br />
ALDO POMPONI – APC CONSULTING (ITALY)<br />
Aldo Pomponi is CEO of APConsulting and currently works as strategic<br />
consultant for small and medium-sized enterprises in Italy and transition<br />
economies countries. He is highly experienced in business and people<br />
management practices, as well as in integrating innovative technologies in<br />
business operations. His 20-year experience was consolidated as entrepreneur<br />
with ISA srl, in the field of international software engineering, and as Director<br />
of Knowledge Management and Operational Efficiency with Genuity, in Paris<br />
and Boston. Mr Pomponi is currently participating in an international project to<br />
create a web-based universal platform that will enable individuals to build and manage their own<br />
business environment, thus eliminating the need for complex structures and reducing their need for<br />
capital to start new businesses.
FAISEL RAHMAN - DIRECTOR - FAIR FINANCE (UK)<br />
Faisel has a background in international development including work at the<br />
Grameen Bank and World Bank where he focused on developing the <strong>microfinance</strong><br />
sector. In 2000 he joined The Environment Trust, a Development Trust in East<br />
London, where he developed a peer lending microcredit programme and<br />
established the East End Microcredit Consortium. He also developed the Money<br />
Matters Project, an innovative debt advice project, with three local East London<br />
Housing Associations to help highly indebted tenants. In 2005 he integrated the two projects and<br />
created Fair Finance, a credit-based social enterprise in East London set up to tackle usurious and<br />
unfair lenders preying on the poor. Faisel is a board member of the Debt on Our Doorstep Campaign<br />
and of EMN.<br />
PETER RAMSDEN – EXPERT - COPIE (UK)<br />
Peter Ramsden runs a mission driven micro consultancy called Freiss Ltd<br />
(pronounced Frez) is a leading exponent of “economic inclusion” and<br />
enterprise led renewal at <strong>European</strong> level. He is a specialist in enterprise for<br />
disadvantaged groups and areas and in particular has focused attention on<br />
the role of micro and social enterprises in local economies. He cocoordinates<br />
COPIE the Community of Practice on Inclusive<br />
Entrepreneurship which is led by Germany and Flanders and is a<br />
contributor and architect of HTTP://WIKIPRENEURSHIP.EU the new wikipedia style website for micro and<br />
social entrepreneurship. He has wide ranging experience of advising government, local authority and<br />
non-governmental <strong>org</strong>anisations on regional and local development, funding and related policy<br />
issues. He was formerly a board member of the East Midlands Development Agency.<br />
SILVIA RICO – DIRECTOR - FUNDACIÓN NANTIK LUM<br />
Silvia Rico is Director of Fundación Nantik Lum and Co-director and research<br />
fellow of Foro Nantik Lum de MicroFinanzas (“Foro Nantik Lum of Microfinance”).<br />
She has a Bachelor in Business Administration at the Universidad Pontificia<br />
Comillas (Madrid) and a Masters Degree in International Humanitarian Action at<br />
the Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao). At present Silvia is a PhD candidate in<br />
Business Administration at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas Madrid, having<br />
obtained her Advanced Studies for Research Work Diploma. Her research work is<br />
focused upon financial exclusion and microcredit programmes in Spain. She has also extensive<br />
working experience in entrepreneurship and finance as Subdirector of Corporate Development at<br />
Antena 3 Televisión and Investment Director of Antena 3 Interactiva (Madrid, 2000- 2001), Manager<br />
of the investment bank J. Henry Schroder, (Madrid, 1996-1999), and Assistant consultant for the<br />
consultancy The LEK Partnership (London, 1994-1996). She is also a Board member of the <strong>European</strong><br />
Microfinance Network.<br />
JEAN-CLAUDE RODRIGUEZ FERRERA – FOUNDER - COMUNIDADES AUTOFINANCIADAS (SPAIN)<br />
Founder and director of ACAF, an <strong>org</strong>anisation developing the “Self Financed<br />
Communities Model” in Europe, Mr Rodriguez Ferrarra studied World Economy<br />
and has a PhD in Microfinance. He worked 4 years in indigenous communities<br />
in Guatemala, where he founded and directed “Mayan Treasures” (Best<br />
Latinamerican Indigenous Project Award in 2001). The projects he helped<br />
supervise won several awards: he was chosen as social entrepreneur of Ashoka<br />
in 2006, Won the World’s Creative Young Entrepreneur Award, in 2007 as well as the Best Social<br />
Project in Catalonia Award in 2008. He is currently teaching at Universidad Ramon Llull in Barcelona<br />
and in different MBAs and has written a book on “World Economy and Development”.
ANTOINE SAINT-DENIS – DG EMPL EUROPEAN COMMISSION (BELGIUM)<br />
Mr. Saint-Denis represents the <strong>European</strong> Commission/Directorate General for<br />
Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. He works on the <strong>European</strong><br />
Strategy for social protection and social inclusion inside unit E2 (Social Inclusion).<br />
This strategy has been developed by the <strong>European</strong> Union since 2000 in order to<br />
promote the fight against poverty and social exclusion. Microfinance is part of this<br />
strategy as it represents for people in difficulty a tool to enable their entrepreneurship<br />
and maintain a capacity of private investment. Since 2006, DG EMPL is<br />
financially supporting EMN, with the prospect of developing socially-oriented <strong>microfinance</strong> in the EU.<br />
Mr. SAINT-DENIS is a former student of the ENA and has been a Seconded National Expert at the EC<br />
since 2007, after holding management positions in the French Ministry for Social Affairs.<br />
MARC SCHUBLIN – EIF (LUXEMBOURG)<br />
Since 2005 Marc Schublin is Head of the JEREMIE Programme (Joint <strong>European</strong> Resources for Micro<br />
to Medium Enterprises), a joint initiative of the <strong>European</strong> Commission, the <strong>European</strong> Investment<br />
Bank (EIB) and the <strong>European</strong> Investment Fund (EIF) to improve SMEs’ access to finance in the<br />
framework of <strong>European</strong> Regions. Mr. Schublin has a long professional experience within the EIB. He<br />
was appointed Senior Loan Officer, Deputy Head of the EIB Brussels Office and Senior Coordination<br />
Officer. From 2000 to 2005, Mr. Schublin worked as Head of Coordination and Advisory Services for<br />
the EIF where he was i.a. in charge of relations with the EC and the EIB, the EIF Business Plan as<br />
well as institutional issues.<br />
JEAN-MICHEL SERVET – PROFESSOR - GRADUATE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT<br />
STUDIES (SWITZERLAND)<br />
Jean-Michel Servet is professor in the Graduate Institute of International and<br />
Development Studies and collaborates as associate researcher to the French<br />
Institute of Pondicherry (program “Labor, Finance and Social Dynamics”), the<br />
Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IEDES Paris 1) and as visiting<br />
research fellow to the Center for <strong>European</strong> Research in Microfinance (CERMi –<br />

Elio Silva is a special correspondent and editor in chief at Il Sole 24 Ore, an<br />
economic and financial newspaper issued in Italy. He also manages a weekly page<br />

AGATA SZOSTEK – CONSULTANT (POLAND)<br />
Agata Szostek has profound experience in the field of <strong>microfinance</strong>; she has been working in the<br />
industry since 1994. Her knowledge is based on 6 years of experience as a member of the top<br />
management team of Fundusz Mikro Microfinance Center (Polish MFI) and 10 years of cooperation<br />
with the MFC. Agata's competencies and technical skills are focused on credit and operational risk,<br />
portfolio management, institutional capacity building, product development as well as strategic<br />
planning with the perspective of social performance. Also, her track record includes managing a<br />
sustainable training and consulting Unit at MFC. Today as an independent consultant, she cooperates<br />
closely with the MFC Training and Research Units. She also participates in MFC's Social Performance<br />
Management team.
VERONIKA THIEL – RESEARCHER / PROJECT MANAGER - NEF (UK)<br />
Veronika Thiel is a researcher in the Access to Finance team at the new<br />
economics foundation. She is currently undertaking research in the field of<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong>, access to credit, community finance, financial exclusion, and<br />
alternative banking models. A particular focus of her current work is the<br />
alignment of UK <strong>microfinance</strong> with the <strong>European</strong> <strong>microfinance</strong> movement, the<br />
potential of technology to aid financial inclusion, and learning from the ‘South’.<br />
Previously, she worked as Campaigns and Media Analyst for the Children’s Society on children<br />
refugees and child incarceration and as research associate for the Local Economy Policy Unit on<br />
local economic regeneration, promotion of SMEs and BME ownership, as well as private sector<br />
contribution to urban renewal. In 2003, she spent 9 months working as operations officer for<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong> <strong>org</strong>anisation “The Small Enterprise Foundation” in South Africa. She holds a an MSc in<br />
Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a BA<br />
(Hons) in Geography from the Flinders University of South Australia.<br />

Paula Veciana Botet graduated in Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and was<br />
awarded a master’s degree in Development Cooperation by Universitat de Barcelona. From 2008,<br />
she is responsible for the Social Research department of Caixa Catalunya and works as associate<br />
professor of International Economics and Public Sector Economics at Universitat Autònoma de<br />

MARIA TERESA ZAPPIA – MANAGING DIRECTOR – BLUEORCHARD (SWITZERLAND)<br />
Before joining BlueOrchard, Mrs Zappia worked for the <strong>European</strong> Bank for<br />
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for over 8 years, first in Uzbekistan and<br />
then in London, moving up from Associate to Principal and finally Senior Banker.<br />
Most recently, she was in the Group for Small Business, which is EBRD's<br />
<strong>microfinance</strong> team. Prior to this, she was a project economist with the Asian<br />
Development Bank in Manila, a fellow of the Overseas Development Institute in<br />
Swaziland and a trainee at the OECD Development Centre in Paris. She holds a<br />
Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from the University of Sussex (UK),<br />
and a Degree in Economics (BA & MA equivalent) from the University of Florence (Italy). In<br />
