belong to <strong>the</strong> mixed category VN, expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g why <strong>the</strong>y require adverbial ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

adjectival modifiers. We have also suggested (pace Grimshaw <strong>and</strong> Mester 1988) that a LV<br />

semantically selects for its subject, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>matically controls <strong>the</strong> unexpressed subject of <strong>the</strong><br />

verbal noun, <strong>the</strong> ACTOR (with ha-ta) or UNDERGOER (with toy-ta). Thus, we could<br />

expla<strong>in</strong> why LVs cannot co-occur with certa<strong>in</strong> types of verbal nouns such as ciyen (‘delay’)<br />

<strong>and</strong> sosil (‘burnt down’) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Korean</strong>.<br />
