It was the inaugural Swiss National
Day Celebrations in our brand new
clubhouse as well as the official opening
of the Swiss and Austrian Social Sports
Club in Greenpoint. With it falling on a
Sunday, the idea was to ensure that
people came to the clubhouse all day
and not only in the evening.
A lovely brunch was served which
attracted a lot of people. Children were
able to play on a jumping castle in the
shape of a crocodile. They were also
making candles where they could
choose the colours themselves. There
were many little ones doing it with ther
help of their parents too. The clubhouse
was abuzz all day.
Lunch was served and the festivities
just continued until the evening.
The evening kicked off with a note
from the Swiss President Doris
Leuthard. The Swiss Ambassador
Rudolf Bärfuss flew into Cape Town after
celebrating with the Pretoria and
Johannesburg Swiss clubs. He and his
wife were very pleased to see the new
clubhouse. He said in his speech that like
the way Switzerland and Austria worked
together two years ago to host the Euro
Cup, the two countries had worked
together to build the new Swiss and
Austrian Social Sports Club. Outside
children enjoyed a huge bonfire.
Another special guest was JP du
Plessis, DA councillor for Sea Point who
had played a significant role in
deliberations between the Swiss
Committee and the Cape Town City
Council regarding the building of the new
Swiss Club.
After much eating and drinking, the
draw was held. There were lovely prizes
including weekends away at various
hotels and restaurant vouchers. The
main prize, a trip for two to Switzerland
on Swiss, went to Ricardo Bühler.

On the 20th July 2010 the
House Committee of the Swiss &
Austrian Club staged a roof wetting party
for all the contractors and sponsors that
were actively involved in getting the Club
ready in time for the FIFA World Cup
opening in June 2010. Michael
Hartmann, the secretary of the House
Committee, thanked all participants for
their enthusiasm and efforts to get the
Club ready by assisting us with the buildup
of a new “home” from home. He
pointed out that a lot of effort, time and
money had been invested into our new
building with frantic last minute action to
ensure a smooth opening and setting the
foundation stones for this new venue to
serve future Swiss and Austrian
generations. He briefly shared the
history of the club with all participants
and introduced the house committee
members to the forum which was then
followed by a digital slide presentation in
honour of the contractors and sponsors.
It proved to be a successful event with
positive feedback flowing in from all
corners, appreciating our effort to thank
one and all for a job well done, albeit with
some initial teething problems.
We most certainly now have a
venue to be proud of and look forward to
serving you in years to come. Please
support your Club by visiting us more
often and sharing some fun and laugher,
making new friends and thereby further
strengthening the ties between our two
communities.

Due to overheating our braai places next to the
Gazebo is falling apart, the walls are full of cracks and therefor
unsafe. We will have to break it down and rebuild it as soon as
possible. Please remember that these braai places are for
braaing and not bon-fires. The cost for a new braai place is
around R700.
Please let me know if there are any volunteers for this
job….. Also don't cut your wood on the braai places, you are
loosening the bricks and they will soon fall apart as well!!!! In
future try and make use of the tree stumps when cutting
wood….
Once again I would like to ask if any member have
bricks, new or second hand, please bring it to Jonkershoek, you
can drop off next to toolshed or give them to anyone on the duty
list. This is quite urgent. I will be overseas during the month of
August and 1st week in September, please contact Nik on 084

FRAUENTREFFEN
The months are flying past and once again it is time to
report on another couple of noteworthy meetings. The first,
which took place end of May. was an invitation to lunch at the
residence of the General Consul, Mrs J. Flueckiger. After a
relaxing time chatting and getting to know our hostess a little
better, we settled down to an amazing buffet lunch, which
even included a couple of typical Swiss dishes. This was
followed by a delicious dessert and coffee and more leisurely
chatting, while admiring the beautiful view from high up there
on the moutainside, before we could finally tear ourselves
away again. - Mrs Flueckiger, we would all like to thank you
once again most sincerely for a truly memorable day!
The following month end was remarkable in that we
could FINALLY move into our new Swiss Club, which was
pretty exciting. Needless to say, we had to inspect everything
and, although it still needs some finishing touches, we were
very happy to have a new home at last, where we can come
together on the last Wednesday of every month for our regular
Kaffeeklatsch.
If you would like to join us there, please make sure you

never know, we might just have planned something really
special!

CYCLE CLUB
The Cycling activities of our Subsection came to a grinding halt
the last couple of weeks. First came all the excitement of the
Soccer World Cup with all the various teams to support or
games to attend either at the new Swiss Club or at the Stadium
itself. Then started the Tour de France with Cancellara in
Yellow for a few Days and the Epic Battle between Contador
and Andy Schlock. After all of this, everyone should be
motivated to start the new Cycling Season again and to
celebrate this occasion we will have a Ride on the 12th of
September, followed by a Spring Brunch at the Swiss Club.

Visit of Mrs. Pascale Bruderer, President of the
Swiss National Council
After a rather stormy session at the Swiss Parliament, Mrs.
Pascale Bruderer, Speaker of the Swiss National Council for 2010,
visited Cape Town from June 26th until July 1st 2010 on a private trip.
With her husband, she watched the soccer game Portugal vs. Spain
and was very impressed by the magnificent Cape Town Stadium and
its atmosphere. It's really a pity that the Swiss National Team did not
qualify for this round and a pity too that Mrs. Bruderer could only catch
a glimpse of the beauty of the Mother City. Fortunately, time was not
too short for our young and sporty Speaker to climb Lion's Head to
enjoy the breathtaking view on a summer like winter day. She was
also pleased to meet with some representatives of the Swiss
community during a dinner hosted in her honour at my residence.
Following her short stay in Cape Town, Mrs. Bruderer visited
the projects of a Swiss NGO in Port Elizabeth and, last but not least,
enjoyed a well deserved relaxing stopover at the Shamwari Game
Reserve before heading back to Switzerland on July 4th.

RIFLE CLUB
At the Eidgenoessishes Schuetzenfest in Aarau, our
Cape Town team won the competition for Swiss rifle clubs
abroad! On Saturday July 3 the Swiss Rifle Club Cape Town
won the Club competition for Swiss rifle clubs abroad (i.e.
registered outside Switzerland). Twenty-one clubs from 11
countries took part. We had three competitors in the top six
individual results!
On the 15th of May the weather-gods smiled on us
when we held our semi-annual shooting competition hosted by
the Navy and lost – again. However, the 1st and 3rd highest
individual scores were achieved by members of the SRC,
using the Navy’s firearms and ammo. The top eight of each
team’s scores were rated. In all, there were over twenty
participants and some of their partners. A journalist and a
photographer from a Swiss Sunday paper (Zürcher
Sonntagszeitung) visited us, participated in some shooting
and thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings, which were
concluded by a friendly get-together and a sumptuous braai.
We also had a .22 shoot in glorious weather on
Saturday July 17. There was only a small turnout, more’s the
pity, but one youngster who initially groaned about the long
drive thoroughly enjoyed the shooting and definitely will be
back.
Our next regular shoot is on August 21 @ 12:00 noon
at the Klawer shooting range on Red Hill above Simons-town.

The Swiss Mobile Consulate at the FIFA 2010 World Cup
The Football World Cup in South
Africa has been an excellent opportunity
for the Swiss Consular service to
introduce a new way of assistance. For
the first time, a Mobile Consulate was set
up providing its services to supporters in
need on the spot. The consular team
consisted of three women employees
from the Consulate General of
Switzerland in Cape Town and from the
Embassies in Pretoria and Kinshasa.
Durban was their first base of
operations, where Switzerland beat
Spain (the subsequent World
Champion!) in a historic match 1-0. The
Mobile Consulate was stationed for four
days in the Fan Zone along the beach,
attracting the attention of numerous
compatriots flocking to the stadium. The

its sides and the Swiss flag flying high,
aroused the interest of many passers-by
and their enthusiasm at the innovative
idea of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
The Mobile Consulate and its team
headed next to Port Elizabeth where
Switzerland played Chile. It was
stationed for three days in the Fifa Fan
Fest, where all the matches were shown
on a big screen. To get maximum
visibility on match day, the van was
parked in the immediate vicinity of the
stadium. Not only the public but the
Swiss media as well showed a keen
interest in the Mobile Consulate,
requesting several interviews from its
team. The feedback of the Swiss media
has been very positive. Unfortunately, as
you know, Switzerland lost against Chile,
but yet at this point still keeping faith to
reach the group of 16.
The last stop was Bloemfontein where
Switzerland faced Honduras. Again, a
suitable location for the van was found in
proximity of the Waterfront shopping
mall, a central meeting point for all the
fans. The Swiss consular employees,
clad in their smart red “SwissAssistance”
jackets, were greeted like old
acquaintances by the Swiss supporters
and many had their picture taken in their
company and the van in the background.
Following the frustrating draw
against Honduras, the “Swiss Nati” was
heading back home and consequently
the journey of the Mobile Consulate
came to an end too.
Fortunately the Mobile Consulate did
not have to deal with serious incidents or
even a major crisis. A few stolen or lost
passports were reported and dealt with,
a Swiss citizen urgently needed a
certified copy of his passport to collect
his tickets, another one needed the
intervention of the Mobile Consulate to
avoid a night in jail. It was largely thanks
to the excellent preparation by the South
African organizers and the strict but
polite implementation of security
measures that a peaceful atmosphere
prevailed during the whole tournament.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Dear Members
This month we are sending
out the Newsletter
somewhat late, but you
receive a packed issue with
pictures from our Swiss
National Day celebration, as
well as from the action at
the Club during the soccer
World Cup and the games
we showed.
We as South Africans or
living here can be proud to
have hosted such a
successful World Cup. We
certainly exceeded
everyone's expectations and
should reap the benefits in
increased tourism and investments in the years to come!
The house-committee had been working very hard to get the
club in shape for the opening game on 11 June. Especially
Ernst Tobler almost camped there for two weeks of June!
Thank you to all for making it happen!
One of the highlights during the World Cub was the historic
win of Switzerland against Spain. The Club was filled to
capacity with about 180 fans! At least we can now say we
were the only team to beat the World Champions!
On 20 July the House Committee invited sponsors,
contractors and guests from the City of Cape Town for a
cocktail. Michael Hartmann did a great presentation of
showing the process of the renovations to the new club.
The National Day was also the official opening of the Swiss
Club. We decided to make it a day long affair to give
everyone the opportunity to visit the club.
We were lucky with the weather! The children could play on
the large Jumping Castle and make candles. Our Consul
General Irene Flückiger addressed the members at
lunchtime and our Ambassador Mr. Rudolf Bärfuss in the
evening. We appreciated that our Ambassador especially
flew down to be with the Swiss in the Cape!
We also welcomed our local Councilor JP Smith and Pete
van Heerden of the City of Cape Town.
A young Swiss Riccardo Bühler was the lucky winner of the
main Raffle prize, a flight for two with SWISS from
Johannesburg to Europe! Find the list of all the winners and
sponsors in this issue!
We have many events planned in the weeks to come.
Please remember that the Club is open Wednesday and
Thursday evenings and for some special events Friday to
Sunday, please see under Catering News and watch out for
the Newsflashes!
In the past few weeks we have received several donations
and also sponsorship of our members that built the bar,
speaker's desk, ceilings, the roofing of the pergola and much
more. We will do list of all our sponsors at a later stage. If
you wish to make a contribution, please contact me.
