SOUND RECORDING TECHNIQUES<br />

Eight Weeks, February 7 - March 27, Tuesday evenings, 7:30-10:30 PM<br />

Fee : $50. Instructor : Tom Streich<br />

This Workshop will concentrate on an introduction to basic electronics ; proper use<br />

of recording equipment ; history of recording ; broadcast, video, film, and multi-track<br />

music production . Areas that will be covered include proper miking for different<br />

sound sources and situations, stereo and multi-track recording and (nixing techniques,<br />

and audio processing . The use of equipment and a variety of microphones<br />

will be taught through hands-on demonstration . Participants may schedule studio<br />

time in addition to normal workshop hours.<br />

BASIC AUDIO SYNTHESIS<br />

Two Days, Saturday and Sunday, March 24 & 25, 10 :00 AM - 5 :00 PM<br />

Fee : $25 . Instructor : Vernon Norwood<br />

The workshop will concentrate on fundamental acoustic and electronic principles,<br />

as applied to syn<strong>the</strong>sizers and signal processing . The Aries System 300 syn<strong>the</strong>sizer<br />

will be used as a model for generating and altering sound ; as well as equalizers,<br />

delay lines etc.<br />

Waveforms, e .q . curves, signal flow, audio spectrum, frequency response and modulation<br />

will be discussed and applied to various methods of sound generation .<br />

HOW TO WRITE AND SELL YOUR SCREENPLAY<br />

Two Days, Saturday and Sunday, March 24 & 25, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM<br />

Fee : $75. Instructor: Michael Hauge<br />

The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with <strong>the</strong> knowledge and tools<br />

necessary to complete, evaluate and market a screenplay for a feature film, movie<br />

for television, series episode or independent film . The primary focus will be <strong>the</strong><br />

understanding of screenwriting practices as <strong>the</strong>y apply to <strong>the</strong> Hollywood film and<br />

television industry, and how <strong>the</strong>y differ from traditional local, independent and<br />

university filmmaking instruction and methods . Each participant will be provided<br />

with a sample screenplay for a current feature film and for a current TV series episode<br />

; a sample treatment ; a sample synopsis ; a current listing of agents ; <strong>the</strong> current<br />

table of Writers Guild minimum fees ; and a sample deal memo.<br />

INSTRUCTORS :<br />

JOHN HASSENFRATZ has worked as a director, cinematographer, editor, and<br />

sound engineer in <strong>the</strong> production of motion pictures for television, business, and<br />

industry . He was Vice President in charge of production at Concepts in Communication,<br />

and is currently an independent producer in communications media .<br />

MICHAEL HAUGE is an Independent Producer, and President of Hilltop Productions,<br />

responsible for all aspects of acquisition, development, and production of<br />

feature films, movies for television, and series . He is also a screenwriting and film<br />

instructor at UCLA and o<strong>the</strong>r institutions, responsible for creating, organizing and<br />

conducting classes, workshops and seminars .<br />

NANCY STALNAKER NORWOOD is an independent videomaker who received<br />

her B.F.A . In photography from <strong>the</strong> Memphis Academy of Arts and her M .F.A . from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, New York where she was Media Program<br />

Coordinator and Video Instructor from 1981-83." She-is currently Assistant Producer<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Frontier Series and Assistant Video/Electronic Arts Curator and New Music<br />

Programmer at Media Study/Buffalo . Her videotapes and installations have been<br />

exhibited throughout New York State .<br />

VERNON NORWOOD is an electronic composer, percussionist, videomaker, and<br />

audio engineer.<br />

KEN ROWE received his Masters Degree from <strong>the</strong> Center for Media Study,<br />

SUNY/Buffalo . He has worked as a director and cinematographer for television commercials,<br />

industrial and educational films and has taught film and photography at<br />

Arizona State University . He is presently working at Media Study/Buffalo as Access<br />

and Workshop Coordinator.<br />

RICHARD SMALKO has his own video repair company and has been serving Media<br />

Study/Buffalo's equipment over <strong>the</strong> past year. He has an A.A .S . degree in Electrical<br />

Technology and is Technical Assistant/Television Engineer for Niagara<br />

Community College .<br />

TOM STREICH is <strong>the</strong> Chief Engineer for Trackmaster Audio, Inc ., where he is<br />

responsible for sound engineering for both broadcast and multi-track music<br />

production .<br />
